Este Haim reveals relationship breakdown over her type 1 diabetes

Perth Now3 days ago

Este Haim's boyfriend dumped her because she has diabetes.
The Haim bassist - who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, where the body is unable to produce insulin correctly, when she was 14 years old - had advised her then-partner that there was a chance her future children could also develop the condition, and was stunned when his reaction was to end their relationship.
In an interview with Britain's GQ magazine, Este said: "I had a guy break up with me because I said that there was a possibility that our kid would have diabetes.
"He was like, 'Then why are we here?' And I was like, 'What?!'"
The Haim sisters have been sharing their dating woes on TikTok in honour of their new single 'Relationships', and Alana Haim admitted one story she'd told was worse than she described on the platform, having ignored advice from her siblings and flown from Los Angeles to London for New Year's Eve to meet a mystery musician she'd been dating for a year, only for him to high-five her at midnight and for it to later emerge that he'd been cheating on her.
She said: 'I was 20, and I was so in love with this guy in a band. Everyone thinks it's about another guy and it's not him, that theory is wrong.'
Discussing flying over to the UK over the festive period, she added: 'And then he ghosted me the whole week.
'And then I found out he was cheating on me with his ex… I was devastated. Devastated!'
Alana Haim, 33, also recalled another horror story, which saw her dump her boyfriend after he issued her an ultimatum when she was offered a role in 2021's 'Licorice Pizza', but she has no regrets.
She said: "I had a boyfriend that gave me an ultimatum between doing 'Licorice Pizza' and staying with him.
'I obviously made the right choice ...'
Singer Danielle Haim, 36, split up with the band's co-producer Ariel Rechtshaid in 2022 after nine years together, but she has learned she is more than "okay alone".
She said: "Not only okay, but so happy. Sorry to be that bitch but I'm like, really having a great time being by myself. And now, unless someone's gonna make me so much more happy, I'm good."
Este announced her engagement to Jonathan Levin in February.
Sharing a selfie on Instagram at the time, she showed off a sparkly diamond ring on her wedding finger, and donned a blue t-shirt that read "I'm taken".

Try the Tiktok-famous tissue bread – and kiss your troubles goodbye – at this boutique bakery

I'm here to kiss my troubles goodbye, however briefly, by tackling the bakery's version of 'tissue bread', which is something of a TikTok sensation. Made by baking laminated croissant dough in a square baking tin, the crunchy edged fist-sized cube reveals gauzy layers of soft pastry when pulled apart. Buttered also loads its tissue bread with chocolate, matcha, pistachio and flavours, plus a particularly marvellous lemon meringue. The plain, pistachio and matcha varieties (I have many troubles to farewell) work surprisingly well dipped into Buttered's frothy Signature Velvet sweet corn drink. It's essentially a corn-flavoured latte, although there are other (much) sweeter flavours including butterscotch, royal chestnut and dalgona, or ppopgi, the traditional Korean honeycomb-flavoured treat made famous in the Netflix series Squid Game. The counter also holds perfect rows of the signature 'Salty Boi' − salt bread, aka sogeum-ppang. It looks like a cross between a croissant and a dinner roll, made by baking a finger-sized log of salted butter into a coil of cold-fermented dough. The added butter creates a crispy base below the roll's crunchy exterior and soft filling. Pocked with several air holes, the Salty Boi accommodates a lavish spree of sweet and savoury fillings. The most luscious filling is potato, egg and mayo, followed by butter-glistening garlic cheese. A corn cheese version is swoony and plump and has a lovely pop of sweetness against the bread's saltiness. (That saltiness comes from the salted butter, by the way, not from extra sodium in the dough.) One of the most popular lunch items is the ham, tomato, lettuce and wasabi-mayo Salty Boi. Thanks to the seasoned bread, it's a va-va-voom improvement on the average meat and salad roll.

The $4 product (and an $1100 option) that will take your ponytail to new heights

This story is part of the June 8 edition of Sunday Life. See all 14 stories. When I mentioned this week's topic to my colleagues, one question flew around the office: what is the 'it' ponytail? Ponytails are more than just a way to pull your hair back from your face. They can be sleek and poker straight, high-rise and bouncy, volume-packed and worn to the side, and low-slung. And, oh, the ribbons! Red-carpet highlights include Nicole Kidman at January's Golden Globes with her high, swinging switch. Meanwhile, on TikTok, the viral 'flip and claw clip' incarnation creates volume with minimal hassle: just twist and clamp. To master the high pony, hair stylist Philip Barwick has this advice. 'It's best to begin by evenly distributing a heat protector and styling mousse through the hair, paying particular attention to the roots out to the mid-lengths and then blow dry,' he says. 'This sets the hair up for easy ponytail styling because a high ponytail looks best when your hair is smooth and frizz-free.' Gather all your hair high at the crown and hold it in place; it needs to be tight, but not so tight that it gives you a headache. Once you've got the ponytail in place, secure it with a strong hair elastic, like Lululemon Uplifting Scrunchies 3 Pack ($29). For a final, smoothing touch, use Kerasilk Flyaway Wand ($29) to tame any strays. To polish this look, hide the hair tie by taking a small section of hair from the ponytail and wrapping it around the base, securing it underneath with a bobby pin. To make sure everything is secure, give your ponytail a light mist of hairspray. For reference, check out Anne Hathaway at the recent Met Gala. For a twist on this version, try wearing it low and to one side. The slicked-back ponytail is also on-trend. Begin with clean, damp hair; if your hair is dry, lightly mist with water to create a smooth base. Use a smoothing cream like MoroccanOil Hydrating Styling Cream ($25) to tame flyaways and boost shine. Work it evenly through your hair from the roots to the ends. With a paddle brush, smooth your hair back. Grab the hair at the nape of your neck and secure tightly with a hair elastic. Next, take a fine-tooth comb and go over the ponytail and your hairline to make it super smooth. Mist with a strong-hold hairspray, like Tresemme Extra Hold Hairspray ($4) to keep hair anchored in place. To take these styles to the next level, we love the addition of a clip-in bow. Go from the high end, with a Prada Velvet Bow Hair Clip ($1110), to low with Morgan & Taylor's Piera Bow ($40).
