Australia's PM says easing of curbs on US beef not prompted by Trump
Trump this week said the U.S. would sell "so much" beef to Australia after Canberra announced the relaxation of restrictions, potentially smoothing trade talks with Washington.
In place since 2003, the curbs were due to concerns about bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease, which can kill cattle as well as people who eat infected beef.
When asked on Sunday if the easing had anything to do with Trump, Albanese said "No, this has been a process that has been there for 10 years, the review process".
"This wasn't a political decision," Albanese said in remarks on Australian Broadcasting Corp television, adding that Trump had not raised the issue with him in a phone call.
The comments come after U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins called the easing a win for Trump. In April, Trump singled out the beef trade disparity with Australia after Australia's beef exports to the U.S. surged last year, reaching A$4 billion amid a slump in U.S. beef production.
By contrast, Australia's agriculture minister said the rules were relaxed after a "rigorous science and risk-based assessment" concluded that U.S. measures to monitor and control cattle movement were effectively managing biosecurity risks.
News of Australia changing its policy was first reported by the Australian Financial Review. The report said Australia will use the easing of rules to argue its case for the U.S. to wind back 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium and Trump's threat to impose a 200% tariff on pharmaceuticals. Collins said the decision was a purely scientific one.
A loosening of beef import rules is not expected to boost significantly U.S. shipments because Australia is a major beef producer and exporter whose prices are much lower, according to analysts.

AbbVie lifts annual profit forecast on strong demand for newer immunology drugs
July 31 (Reuters) - AbbVie (ABBV.N), opens new tab raised its 2025 profit forecast on Thursday, after beating Wall Street estimates for second-quarter results on strong sales of its newer immunology drugs Skyrizi and Rinvoq. Shares of the drugmaker rose nearly 3% to $195.03 before the bell. The company is pushing Skyrizi and Rinvoq to counter the drop in sales of Humira, as the once-bestselling drug faces competition from several cheaper biosimilars that began hitting the U.S. market in 2023. "We're entering the second half of the year with substantial momentum," said CEO Robert Michael. Skyrizi recorded quarterly sales of $4.42 billion, beating analysts' average estimate of $4 billion, while Rinvoq sales of $2.03 billion surpassed estimates of $1.97 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. The North Chicago-based drugmaker has spent more than $20 billion on acquisitions since 2023 as Humira lost patent protection. On Wednesday, Bloomberg News reported that AbbVie is in talks to acquire privately held psychiatric disorder drug developer Gilgamesh Pharmaceuticals in a deal worth about $1 billion. Global sales of arthritis treatment Humira, once the world's best-selling drug, came in at $1.18 billion in the second quarter, missing estimates of $1.45 billion. AbbVie's forecast raise comes on the back of the European Union's framework trade deal with the United States, under which all EU-produced pharmaceuticals entering the U.S. will be subject to a 15% tariff. AbbVie has a significant manufacturing presence in Ireland, where it makes its wrinkle treatment Botox. The company now expects adjusted annual profit per share between $11.88 and $12.08, compared with its previous expectations of $11.67 to $11.87. Virginia Giuffre's family pleads with Trump not to pardon Ghislaine Maxwell
The family of Virginia Giuffre, one of Jeffrey Epstein 's victims, has urged Donald Trump not to pardon the disgraced financier's longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell. As backlash grows over his administration's handling of the Epstein case, Trump told reporters on Monday that he is 'allowed' to grant clemency to Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking minors, adding that he hadn't thought about it. The family of Giuffre, a key survivor of Epstein's sexual abuse who died by suicide in April, said any leniency shown toward Maxwell would be 'one of the highest travesties of justice.' 'The government and the President should never consider giving Ghislaine Maxwell any leniency,' the family said in a statement Wednesday. 'Ghislaine Maxwell is a monster who deserves to rot in prison for the rest of her life for the extraordinary violence and abuse she put not just our sister Virginia through, but many other survivors, who may number in the thousands.' A senior administration official told NBC News that no leniency towards Maxwell is being discussed. The family also noted that Trump said that 'clemency for Maxwell is not something he is even thinking about at this time.' The Giuffres pounced on Trump's claims on Tuesday that Epstein 'stole' the victim from his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach. Aged 16, Giuffre had worked at Trump's resort as a locker-room attendant during the summer of 2000. 'It was shocking to hear President Trump invoke our sister and say that he was aware that Virginia had been 'stolen' from Mar-a-Lago,' they said in the statement. 'It makes us ask if he was aware of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell's criminal actions, especially given his statement two years later that his good friend Jeffrey 'likes women on the younger side... no doubt about it.'' Trump denies having any knowledge of Epstein's criminal activity, and the president has never been accused of wrongdoing in connection with the disgraced financier's case. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday evening that the president kicked Epstein out of Mar-a-Lago for 'being a creep' to female staff. In the statement, the family acknowledged that Giuffre had worked at Trump's Florida resort years before Epstein and Trump allegedly fell out over a real estate deal around 2004, and a year before police began investigating Epstein. However, the family accused Maxwell of having 'preyed upon' Giuffre while she worked at the resort 25 years ago. Giuffre's family told The Atlantic on Wednesday that the Epstein victim's work at Mar-a-Lago was meant to be a fun summertime job, but instead led to her being sex trafficked. For more than a decade, the Epstein case has been a subject of intense public interest, amid speculation that high-profile public figures who had ties to the financier may have been involved in – or had knowledge of – his sex-trafficking network. The Trump administration has been facing backlash after the Justice Department and FBI said in a memo released earlier this month that there was no client list of Epstein's associates who may have participated in his crimes. It also noted that Epstein did indeed die by suicide in his jail cell in 2019.
