Mid East Info05-05-2025

Abu Dhabi, UAE; May 2025: As part of its long-term strategy to strengthen global endowment collaboration and drive innovation in social investment, the Endowments and Minors' Funds Authority (Awqaf Abu Dhabi) has concluded a strategic mission to Germany. The visit marked a significant step in expanding partnerships with leading philanthropic institutions and endowment funds across Europe.
Germany, with over €50 billion in endowment assets managed by thousands of charitable foundations, represents one of the world's most advanced ecosystems for philanthropic investment. These foundations balance prudent financial management with social innovation, making them a key knowledge hub for organisations like Awqaf Abu Dhabi seeking to enhance the impact, transparency, and sustainability of their own endowment portfolios.
Led by His Excellency Fahad Abdulqader Al Qassim, Director General of Awqaf Abu Dhabi, the mission included high-level meetings with the Volkswagen Foundation, the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), and the Robert Bosch Foundation, three of Germany's most influential philanthropic entities.
'Our mission to Germany reflects Awqaf Abu Dhabi's commitment to building global partnerships that drive innovation in endowment management and amplify impact,' said H.E. Al Qassim. 'By connecting with leading institutions, we are learning from their experiences, adopting best practices, and enhancing our financial sustainability and social investment capabilities. Endowments are powerful instruments for creating long-term value, socially, economically, and culturally, and through such global engagements, we are shaping more resilient and forward-thinking communities.'
The mission began with a strategic briefing at the UAE Embassy in Berlin, where the delegation explored avenues for deeper UAE–Germany cooperation in the endowment and philanthropic sectors. This set the tone for a series of knowledge-exchange sessions with prominent German organisations.
In Hannover, Awqaf Abu Dhabi engaged with the Volkswagen Foundation, the largest private research funder in Germany. Discussions explored governance structures, funding models, community impact initiatives, and the role of technology in data-driven philanthropy. The delegation also shared Awqaf Abu Dhabi's own strategic framework, highlighting its integrated approach to financial and social returns.
At the DBU headquarters in Osnabrück, conversations focused on sustainable asset management and the foundation's support for environmental and circular economy projects. The visit also included a tour of DBU's facilities, offering a first-hand look at its operational ecosystem and measurable social outcomes.
The mission concluded with a visit to the Robert Bosch Foundation, where the delegation explored impact-driven funding strategies, cross-sector collaborations, and the integration of digital tools to improve foundation effectiveness.
With a diverse and expanding portfolio of income-generating assets, Awqaf Abu Dhabi adheres to international standards of wealth and impact management. The organisation remains committed to uplifting communities through targeted initiatives in education, healthcare, and social welfare, empowering future generations while advancing Abu Dhabi's vision for sustainable development and philanthropy-led innovation.
About Awqaf Abu Dhabi:
Established in May 2023, Awqaf Abu Dhabi promotes and develops the endowment sector by maximising social and financial impact across the community through developing investments and partnerships to meet values of sustainability.
In addition to managing all endowment related processes, Awqaf Abu Dhabi manages the financial guardianship and development of wealth of minors, interdicted and others, contributing to greater financial and social inclusion.
Awqaf Abu Dhabi aims to advance the culture of endowments, and organises events, conferences, and seminars centered on the management and investment of endowments and minors' funds. It also aims to reshape endowment practices at the Emirate level.

Estonia & Germany Embassies in Cairo Celebrate MFC Co-Chairmanship End

Rana Atef The Estonian Ambassador to Cairo, Ingrid Amer, hosted an event to commemorate the conclusion of Estonia and Germany's co-chairmanship of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC), officially passing the chairmanship to Finland. In her remarks, Ambassador Amer underscored Estonia's enduring commitment to media freedom, highlighting the country's role in defending free expression and combating disinformation. 'Over the past two years, Estonia has co-chaired the Media Freedom Coalition working together with all MFC members to defend press freedom,' she stated. She expressed confidence in Finland's ability to lead the coalition forward, noting, 'As neighbors, we can say with confidence the leadership stays in very good hands. We share a deep commitment to democracy, transparency, and independent journalism.' Ambassador Amer emphasized the vital role of a free and open media in sustaining informed societies and safeguarding diverse voices. 'Media pluralism and digital literacy have been key priorities during our term. While our co-chairmanship ends today, our commitment remains strong,' she concluded, thanking the MFC member states for their shared efforts in defending journalists and independent voices worldwide. On her side, Anita Klein, the Deputy of the German Ambassador to Cairo, said: 'I would like to extend my sincere thanks for today's invitation and, above all, to express our gratitude to Estonia for its dedicated two-year co-chairmanship of the Media Freedom Coalition. Over the past year and a half, Germany has had the pleasure of sharing this responsibility with Estonia — a partnership we have truly enjoyed. While my own role was modest, the positive impact of our joint efforts is evident, and I must say, I have developed a deep appreciation for Estonia and its commitment to media freedom.' Taking up the role of incoming chair, Eero Väisänen, Deputy Head of Mission and Counsellor at the Finnish Embassy in Cairo, echoed the sentiment of continuity and shared values. 'This is a topic close to our hearts — not only for Estonia and Germany, but also for Finland,' he said. 'We have a long and consistent tradition of upholding freedom of expression, both domestically and as part of our foreign and development policy.' Väisänen noted Finland's historical legacy of press freedom, referencing a 1776 law, 'Even in countries such as Egypt, where press freedom faces many challenges, we must remain humble and receptive. Issues like online harassment of female journalists and the spread of misinformation are global challenges — including in Finland,' he added. The event witnessed the presence of several EU diplomats and distinguished journalists from Cairo. read more 2 Most Inspirational Green Projects in Egypt AEW Dynamite, WWE NXT to Strive over Viewership Tonight Egypt Marks 70th Anniv. of 2011 Revolution, National Police Day In Depth: WWE NXT Halloween Havoc In Depth: AEW Dynamite, WWE NXT Tuesday Viewership Strive Videos & Features WATCH: Egyptians Break Ramadan Fasts in Matariya Videos & Features GrEEk Campus Hosts Jobzella Fifth Career Fair Videos & Features 3 Iconic Ramadan Songs of All Times Videos & Features Top 4 Destinations to Visit in Upper Egypt News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Five names to watch in the Premier League transfer window - World

Premier League clubs are already busy strengthening their squads for the 2025/26 season with an early transfer frenzy sparked by the upcoming Club World Cup. AFP Sports looks at five names to watch as the transfer window kicks into gear. Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) Liverpool have shown no sign of resting on their laurels as English champions. After a quiet first year for Arne Slot in the transfer market, the Reds have moved quickly to back the Dutchman heavily this summer. The darling of German football, Wirtz looks set to smash the Premier League transfer record should he get his wish of a dream move to Anfield. Liverpool have reportedly had a bid worth up to £109 million ($147 million) rebuffed as Leverkusen hold out for a £125 million fee. That would break the record set by Chelsea's £115 million capture of Moises Caicedo from under Liverpool's noses two years ago. Wirtz was instrumental in Leverkusen's stunning German league and cup double in the 2023/24 season, plus a run to the Europa League final under Xabi Alonso. The two clubs have already agreed one deal as Jeremie Frimpong has joined Liverpool as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd) Fresh from the club's worst season since they were relegated 51 years ago, losing their inspirational captain would appear to be the worst possible news for United. However, selling Fernandes to Saudi side Al Hilal could provide much-needed funds for Ruben Amorim to rebuild a squad in his image at Old Trafford. The Red Devils could land £100 million for the 30-year-old, who would become one of the world's highest paid players should be move to the Gulf. "If the club thinks it's time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it is what it is and football sometimes is like this," said Fernandes after United lost the Europa League final to Tottenham last month. Fernandes would leave enormous shoes to fill for a side already lacking in creativity and a goal threat. Despite a miserable campaign collectively, only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah provided more goal contributions last season among Premier League players in all competitions than Fernandes' 19 goals and 19 assists. Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford) Mbeumo is one of United's key targets to end their woes in front of goal. The French-born Cameroon international enjoyed a stellar season with Brentford, scoring 20 times. Mbeumo revelled in becoming the Bees' star man since the departure of Ivan Toney and his partnership with Yoane Wissa carried Thomas Frank's men to an impressive top half finish. Despite interest from Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham, Mbeumo's preferred destination is reportedly Old Trafford if United can reach an agreement with Brentford. United have already added Matheus Cunha to bolster a misfiring forward line. Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting Lisbon) A remarkable 54-goal season for Sporting has made the Swede a target for a series of clubs seeking more firepower. Arsenal have been strongly linked with bringing Gyokeres back to England as Mikel Arteta seeks a clinical finisher to end the Gunners' five-year trophy drought. The 26-year-old has a 100 million euro (£84 million) buyout clause in his Sporting contract, but it is expected the Portuguese champions would settle for around 70 million euros. Despite six goals in eight Champions League games, there are doubts over Gyokeres' ability to transfer his prolific form in Portugal to the Premier League. He joined Sporting just two years ago from English second tier side Coventry after failing to make the grade at Brighton. Arsenal also have a long-standing interest in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, while Newcastle's Alexander Isak appears an unattainable target after the Magpies qualified for the Champions League. Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace) Eze will forever be a Palace legend after scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City to deliver the Eagles' first ever major trophy. The England international's eye for goal and a defence-splitting pass has seen him targeted by a plethora of the Premier League's best. City eye the 26-year-old as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, while Arsenal and Tottenham are also interested and could easily trigger his £68 million release clause.
