The image, posted on Kensington Palace's social media, was taken by photographer Josh Shinner earlier this year.
It was accompanied by the message: 'Happy 12th Birthday to Prince George!' followed by a cake emoji.
George, whose birthday falls during his summer break from school, has one year left at his prep school Lambrook before he moves on to his senior school – with either Eton or Marlborough College thought to be the frontrunners.
The prince joined his parents and sister Princess Charlotte at the Wimbledon men's final earlier this month, where he used a fan to keep cool in the Royal Box in the blazing afternoon sun.
In June, George was seen nudging his boisterous younger brother Louis on the Buckingham Palace balcony to wave more calmly at the crowd following the Trooping the Colour ceremony.
Prince George Alexander Louis was born in the private Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London, at 4.24pm on July 22 2013, weighing 8lb 6oz.
He made his debut in front of the world's media on the hospital steps one day later, wrapped in a white merino wool shawl, cradled in his mother's arms.

Gladiators star Steel launches charity in memory of son who died after 13 days
A Gladiators star has announced a fundraising challenge in honour of his son who was born prematurely and died just 13 days old. Steel, whose real name is Zack George, shared a heartbreaking insight earlier this year into his baby's premature birth at 23 weeks old. Posting on social media in April, the 35-year-old shared an image of himself and his wife Samantha in tears as they held their baby Leo inside the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The BBC star explained how Leo had three blood transfusions, collapsed lungs, a grade one and two bleed on his brain and a hole in his heart. Commenting underneath the post, he said he 'wishes he could have done more' to help him. Now, however, George has launched a fitness fundraiser called the '13 Days Fighting' Burpee Challenge to help raise money for other families enduring similar heartache. In response to the extraordinary care George and his wife received, the couple founded Leo & Friends, a baby loss awareness charity that aims to recognise and equip the NICU teams who work tirelessly to care for premature and critically ill babies. This new challenge will see George complete a mile of burpees every day for 13 consecutive days, from 18th to 30th August this year, across an array of different locations across the UK. In a statement, George and his wife said: 'Leo fought with everything he had for 13 days. This challenge is our way of turning that pain into purpose – to give Leo a lasting legacy and help other families who find themselves where we once stood.' As George shared the news of his tragedy in April, he wrote on Instagram: 'Your mummy brought you into this world and your daddy held you as you left ♥️ 'Leo…… you showed us what the true definition of strength is and we are so proud of you. 'You brought so much positivity to the world with the short time you were with us and we felt that positivity in abundance, we thank you all so much for that. 'Although you were only with us for a short time, you brought us a lifetime of love. Thank you for letting us know that YOU had had enough of this fight. We will forever be grateful that we didn't have to make that decision for you 💔 More Trending 'Leo our lion, we love you more than you will ever know 'Rest easy our little boy.' Supported by Currys, the funds raised from his challenge will go towards equipment, support services, and improvements to the NICU at Leicester Hospital, who gave Leo his 13 precious days and cared for him around the clock. EastEnders' Elaine 'thrown to the ground' in violent attack as George's secret 'rumbled'
It's set to be a frightening week for Elaine Peacock in EastEnders next week as spoilers reveal that she's set to be knocked to the ground by a group of threatening lads... It's been a tough few weeks for Elaine Peacock in EastEnders, from suffering a heart attack, to selling the pub and being left with no work. Not to mention splitting from her husband George Knight. However, things are about to get a whole lot worse for the character, as spoilers for next week reveal that she's thrown to the ground after being surrounded by a group of threatening lads in an attempt to help her ex George. George was seen getting intimate with Nicola last week - and after the attack Elaine and Cindy are set to find out about their 'relationship'. It all starts when George becomes concerned after hearing that Kojo's 'new friend' Okie has bought him an expensive watch, spoilers for next week reveal. Recently, Ravi has been getting Harry in his illegal dealings with Okie, and next week Harry is set to find out that the duo are using Kojo's flat for their illegal activities. It comes after an EastEnders legend was rushed to hospital after a deadly attack by a familiar face. Now, Okie will be seen manipulating Kojo in a bid to cover up their illegal dealings - as George tries to intervene next week when he buys him a watch. However, not wanting to meddle, George is grateful when Elaine offers to suss the situation out. She goes to see Kojo at his workplace, The Arches, however, disaster strikes when she's thrown to the ground by a group of threatening lads. Kojo and Elaine are then surrounded in a terrifying ordeal, but Okie arrives and chases the gang off. The duo then inform George on how he saved them, and things escalate when Kojo trusts him enough to give him the keys to his flat... We know Kojo flushed Ravi's drugs down the toilet, but he's yet to find out. Will it ever come out and how will Ravi react if it does? Last month, we saw Elaine suffer a heart attack with all the stress of selling the Vic, which she finally agreed to, and she and daughter Linda sold it to Kat Slater in the auction. However, we've recently seen Elaine feeling rather lost not being behind the bar, even going as far as to help Cindy in the Albert to get back into the swing of things. Fans are loving the 'double act' of George's exes, who usually loathe each other. Next week, the pair are set to partner up yet again when they realise there's a new woman in George's life. George and Nicola shocked viewers last week when they got intimate in the office of Harry's Barn. Elaine and Cindy are set to find out the new woman in George's life is Nicola next week, but how will they react?

BBC Strictly Come Dancing star admits 'it's terrifying' as she marks career first
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Former Strictly Come Dancing star Annabel Croft admitted, "It's terrifying", as she marked a career first. The former tennis player competed on the 21st series of Strictly with her professional partner Johannes Radebe. The fan-favourite pair made it to the semi-final, finishing in fourth place behind winning couple Ellie Leach and Vito Coppola. Now, Annabel is hitting the road for a 28-date tour across England, Scotland and Wales. Her debut tour, which is titled From Tennis Balls to Glitter Balls, begins next month, and will take audiences behind the scenes of the world's greatest tennis tournaments, as well as exploring Annabel's time on Strictly. (Image: BBC) Annabel appeared on The One Show on Wednesday (August 6), where she spoke to hosts Alex Jones and Vernon Kay about her new career venture. "I've been asked to do a speaking tour around the country from middle to late September till November, and it's new territory for me because I've never done anything like that before," she explained. "I have done speeches and things, but it's a chance for me to talk about what does it take to go from being a little girl as I was at nine, picking up a racket for the first time. "What does it take, sort of the apprenticeship of going on that journey to then make it to Wimbledon, and then retiring at 21 and moving into broadcasting, interviewing all these wonderful great champions. "And how did that lead me to Strictly Come Dancing. So, it's kind of a tour to look back and reflect on my life." (Image: BBC) The 59-year-old went on to share her pride at embracing public speaking after previously struggling with her confidence, which she described as "terrifying". "When I look back at speaking, it was actually something I was very fearful of when I was younger. I used to almost hyperventilate and have a complete panic attack about speaking publicly," she candidly said. "It's funny for me now thinking, 'Well, I'm going to do a speaking tour'. And it's like, 'How on earth have I come such a big circle?' To be able to have the confidence." Ahead of this year's series, speculation has been mounting about which celebrities will grace the dancefloor. Current cast rumours include Love Island's Dani Dyer, Olympic legend Mo Farah and Corrie star Helen Flanagan. Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this autumn
