Change your CEO, Tim Cook has operational expertise, but Apple needs a CEO who can ..., say analysts in investor note

Time of India4 days ago
Analysts at LightShed Partners said that Apple may need a leadership change to better focus on product innovation, especially in the area of artificial intelligence (AI), reports MarketWatch. In a note published on Wednesday (July 09), the analysts said that while CEO Tim Cook brought operational expertise to the top job, the company now 'needs a product-focused CEO.' The recommendation comes as Apple prepares for the retirement of its Chief Operating Officer, Jeff Williams, who was once seen as a potential successor to Cook.
'To be clear, Tim Cook was the right CEO at the time of his appointment and unquestionably has done a great job,' the analysts wrote. 'Apple has sold over $2.0 trillion of iPhones with Cook as CEO. In fact, iPhone sales could show signs of life this quarter, as tariff-related pull-forwards help stabilize replacement cycles that may finally be bottoming out.'
Still, LightShed analysts Walt Piecyk and Joe Galone raised concerns about Apple's slow progress in AI, warning that the company could fall behind competitors. They highlighted that the efforts to improve Apple's virtual assistant Siri have not met expectations and that Apple may struggle to deliver a 'supercycle' of device upgrades.
'AI will reshape industries across the global economy, and Apple risks becoming one of its casualties,' the LightShed analysts commented. The analysts argued that Apple's position in the AI race could significantly affect its long-term growth.

''Missing on AI could fundamentally alter the company's long-term trajectory and ability to grow at all,' they wrote.
They further noted that some believe the company has an insurmountable moat, referring to how it insulates its business from competition. But 'we have seen these moats crumble many times during technological revolutions,' the analysts added.
They additionally highlighted Apple's attempt to build a smarter Siri assistant. Apple teased a smarter Siri at the 2024 WWDC event. It's been more than a year and the wait is far from being over. The analysts said 'Apple was nowhere with AI then, and little has changed since', dismissing it as 'simply a case of overpromising and underdelivering'.

Global smartphone shipments growth slows in Q2 as tariff uncertainty weighs

The growth of global smartphone shipments slowed in the second quarter as buyers, wary of U.S. tariff-driven economic uncertainty, curbed spending, especially on low-end devices, data from research firm International Data Corp showed on Monday. Shipments increased by 1% in the April-June quarter to 295.2 million units, according to the preliminary data, slower than the 1.5% growth recorded in the previous quarter. Demand in China declined in the second quarter, as subsidies failed to stimulate demand, with Apple seeing a 1% drop. Overall demand has tapered as consumers deprioritize spending on smartphones, especially in low-end segments. Sellers have continued to push higher price points to make up for the slowdown in unit shipments by offering AI in more affordable devices, IDC said. 'In the face of ongoing political challenges, the impact of war, and the complexities posed by tariffs, the 1% growth in the smartphone market stands as a critical indicator that the market is poised to return to growth,' said Anthony Scarsella, research director for Client Devices at IDC. 'Economic uncertainty tends to compress demand at the lower end of the market, where price sensitivity is highest. As a result, low-end Android is witnessing a crunch weighing down overall market growth,' said Nabila Popal, senior research director for Worldwide Client Devices. Samsung saw the highest growth, with shipments increasing 7.9% to 58 million units in the quarter. Apple roughly maintained its market share as the second-top smartphone seller, with a growth of 1.5% in shipments. IDC had in May slashed its 2025 global smartphone shipment growth forecast to 0.6% from 2.3%, citing tariff-driven economic uncertainty and a pullback in consumer spending.

Tesla's India launch live updates: US EV giant set to open first showroom in Mumbai

"It was two months of grilling together with the Tesla team in deciding what colour scheme will go best and about 45 days for execution," said Neeta Sharada, Chief Architect, Tesla's first showroom in Mumbai. 'I have been fortunate to be part of Tesla's journey in India, starting with the first one in Mumbai. Its opposite to the Apple showroom, Apple has a very minimalistic look, the brief here for us was also to be minimalist, we have kept it on a very nice white backdrop with lovely light boxes displaying lots of Tesla images," said Neeta Sharada, Chief Architect, Tesla's first showroom in Mumbai. "To begin with, I warmly welcome Tesla to India. This isn't merely the launch of an experience centre, it's a powerful statement. A statement that Tesla has officially arrived, and done so in the right place, Maharashtra, and specifically Mumbai, which stands not only as the financial, commercial, and entertainment hub of the country but also as its entrepreneurial capital," said Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Situated at the Jio World Drive in Mumbai's premier business hub, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the 4,000 sq. ft. Tesla showroom will showcase the brand's electric vehicles and technologies. However, test drives and deliveries are not likely to be available at the outset. Inflation outlook: CPI might dip to record-low in July; FY26 average may slip below RBI forecast

This image is AI-generated and representational. Retail inflation in India is set to touch a record low in July 2025, with average inflation for the financial year 2025–26 likely to remain well below the Reserve Bank of India 's (RBI) projection, according to a new report by the State Bank of India (SBI). "We believe that the upcoming July 2025 CPI inflation data is set to breach the lowest ever historical print," the report stated. SBI estimates average Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation for FY26 to fall between 3.0% and 3.2%, significantly under the RBI's 3.7% forecast and far below the 4.6% average recorded in FY25. This sharp moderation follows the RBI's recent 50 basis points rate cut during its June policy review. With inflation expectations now appearing benign, the report noted that the central bank is shifting its focus to boosting capital formation to support more durable and sustained growth. As highlighted by the monetary policy committee (MPC) in its latest resolution, monetary decisions will continue to be data-driven, aiming to strike a balance between inflation and growth. For the future, SBI views the current inflation trend as firmly benign, even though risks from external trade disruptions and unpredictable price swings persist. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo The report also hinted at the possibility of another 25 basis points rate cut "sooner than later" to further fuel growth, stating, "The plot seems to be spiced with a further 25 bps rate cut (sooner than later) to give an adrenaline boost to the economic juggernaut as global developments necessitate us to build today for future". India's CPI inflation dropped to a 77-month low of 2.10% in June 2025, down from 2.82% in May and 5.08% a year earlier. The fall was mainly due to a sharp decline in food inflation, which also hit a 77-month low of -0.20%, driven by falling prices of vegetables, pulses, and spices. However, the report flagged a growing concern over imported inflation, which rose for the 13th straight month in June. Surging gold and silver prices were key contributors. The share of imported inflation in the overall CPI basket rose sharply to 71% in June, from 50% in May. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
