Undermining nation's election system a challenge to democracy: Kerala minister K Rajan

Kozhikode: Revenue minister K Rajan said that attempts to undermine the nation's election system and voters' list is a challenge to democracy and the Constitution. Speaking after hoisting the National Flag at MSP Parade Grounds in Malappuram on Independence Day, Rajan said that India stands as a model for other countries because of the strong foundation of its democratic system. "The Constitution mandates that the country's electoral process must be transparent, flawless and fair. Those who attempt to tamper with voter lists or disrupt the electoral process by fabricating fake identity documents are challenging Indian democracy, the Constitution and the sanctity of nationalism. The illusion that the Constitution can be subverted and the electoral system undermined to subvert democracy will be against India's growth and development and cannot be permitted," the minister said. Rajan also criticized the alleged neglect of Kerala by Centre, calling it a sign of the failure of federalism. "Even in times of disaster, Kerala has faced blatant disregard. The demand to waive the debts of Chooralmala landslide victims was not accepted — despite Section 13 of the law passed by the Parliament in 2005 allowing debt waiver for people in disaster-hit areas. The move to amend that law is not in the spirit of democracy," the minister said in his Independence Day message. In a tacit reference to the call by governor to observe the Partition Horrors Day on Aug14, the minister said that the country should dream not of the dark nights of partition, but of the bright dawns of freedom. "On that tragic night of Partition, in the blood- and tear-soaked soil, Mahatma Gandhi walked barefoot through the streets of Noakhali carrying his message of peace, giving out the message not of the horrors of Partition but of unity, tolerance and brotherhood amidst diversity," the minister added. BEST credit society fraud probe: EOW begins inquiry into ₹12.41-crore Lonavala property deal; Sena (UBT)-MNS calls it political vendetta

MUMBAI: With less than a week to go before the keenly watched BEST Employees' Credit Society elections, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has launched a preliminary enquiry against eight senior office-bearers of the society over alleged irregularities in the purchase of a Lonavala property. The inquiry adds to a parallel probe by the state cooperation department, fuelling political tensions between the newly allied Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on one side and the BJP-led Mahayuti on the other. BEST credit society fraud probe: EOW begins inquiry into ₹ 12.41-crore Lonavala property deal; Sena (UBT)-MNS calls it political vendetta The credit society — controlled by the Sena (UBT)'s BEST Kamgar Sena and now in alliance with the MNS for the August 18 polls — is accused of paying ₹18.04 crore for a rest house in Lonavala, well above the ready reckoner rate of ₹5.63 crore, allegedly causing a loss of ₹12.41 crore to members. The complainant, BEST employee and society member Rajendra Gore, alleges the purchase violated cooperative rules, including acquiring property outside the society's jurisdiction without the registrar's permission. The EOW inquiry names chairman Kirtan Kori, secretary Umesh Sarang, directors Bhiwaji Sawant, Raju Sasane, Bhaskar Toraskar, Pramod Rane, former chairman Sanjay Bhagare, and CEO Lalit Parab — all affiliated with the Sena (UBT). Police officials confirmed that those named are being summoned for questioning. This latest action follows a notice dated August 13 from the divisional joint registrar of cooperative societies, appointing an inquiry team to examine the society's 2024-25 records. Separately, the EOW is also investigating a complaint by Vivekanand Ghag alleging ₹24 crore in irregularities. Sena (UBT) and MNS leaders have dismissed the charges as a political ploy. 'Since the Thackeray brothers joined hands for the BEST credit society polls, the whole state is watching. Suddenly, there are allegations. Earlier there were no complaints,' said Kori, who previously headed the Utkarsh Panel. BEST Kamgar Sena president Suhas Samant accused BJP MLC Prasad Lad of instigating the probes to create 'confusion among voters', noting that the society recently earned an 'A' grade in a government audit. Lad, however, defended the inquiries, saying, 'If there are complaints of irregularities, how can we keep quiet?' He insisted that both the cooperation department and the EOW are acting on specific complaints and evidence. The political stakes are unusually high for what is typically a low-profile cooperative poll. The Sena (UBT) will contest 18 of the 21 seats, the MNS two, and the BEST SC/ST Employees Welfare Association one. If victorious, the MNS will also get a nominated director post. The Mahayuti's BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena are contesting as the opposition. The elections mark the first time the Thackeray cousins' parties are contesting together in any poll, seen by both camps as a test run for a broader civic election alliance — and by rivals as a potential threat worth disrupting.

Spanish child castellers form human pyramid in Siddhivinayak temple courtyard

Mumbai: On the occasion of Independence Day Aug 15, a troupe of visiting Spanish Castellers (equivalent of govindas) formed a tall human pyramid in the courtyard of Siddhivinayak temple in Prabhadevi. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Many of them were little children who are light and agile, and are taught to quickly clamber to the topmost layer of the pyramid. The word castellers derives from human "castle makers", and reportedly originates from a festival held to honour Mother Mary in Valencia. The 'human tower' sport is popular in Spain and their castellers have often visited Mumbai and Thane in past years during Janmashtami to perform at events in Thane. They often climb ten layers atop one another, leaving onlookers awestruck. Siddhivinayak temple's deputy executive officer Sandeep Rathod said Friday's unique Indo-Spanish cultural exchange was enjoyed by all. Since 2010-11, various troupes of Spanish castellers had been visiting MMR, first to watch, and then participate, in dahi handi festivities organised by NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Awhad. This year, it is Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik who has invited the castellers for his Sanskruti dahi handi event in Thane Aug 16. His son Purvesh said, "The castellers will form a seven level human pyramid at the Sarnaiks' handi in Thane Saturday. Purvesh said, "When we started Pro Govinda, the vision was always to take Maharashtra's beloved dahi handi tradition to the world. Inviting Marecs de Salt, the renowned Spanish Castellers, is the first step in that journey. This cultural exchange is about celebrating two incredible human tower traditions on a single platform, inspiring unity, and showcasing our heritage internationally. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This is just the beginning." However in Maharashtra, children below the age of 14 are forbidden by law from participating in dahi handi. Still, many little underage players were witnessed climbing the dahi handi at political events in Thane in 2024. No police action was reported.
