A Georgia teen did not deserve to have her excitement of going to senior prom soiled by the senseless killing of her prom date. However, she still made a decision to make sure he was honored in his absence. The tribute will bring you to tears.
Justin Etienne and his date, Reyaa, were set to attend their senior prom hosted by Salem High school. However, on March 19, the school's 'Senior Skip Day,' tragedy struck:The Newton County Sheriff's Office said 18-year-old Etienne was gunned down in Denny Dobbs Park in Conyers, Ga. where a group of other students met.
His family asserted that he didn't live a rough life but was a dedicated soccer player who kept up with his studies and looked forward to going to college, per Atlanta News First. The family said he was just accepted into Georgia State University.
'He had such a bright future. He had so many plans. I already know he was going to be good. His attitude said it all,' said Hugh Neil, the teen's father, per the report.
His parents weren't the only ones left grieving the teen. Reyaa was left without her companion and prom date. However, she refused to allow the incident turn her biggest high school moment sour. She decided to celebrate the life of Etienne with the most dazzling part of the occasion: her dress.
Photos from the teen's social media show her donning a bedazzled slick back ponytail accompanied by a stunning custom rose gold gown designed by her uncle. Printed onto the front of the dress is a class photo of Etienne.
On the shoulder straps accenting the gown was a message: 'So, in case this is the last letter I write to you, Will you make Heaven a place on Earth?' The designer said the theme of the gown was inspired by Etienne's promposal to Reyaa, via social media.
Multiple social media videos displayed Reyaa being presented with her gown as well as the tear-jerking moment when Etienne's mother presented her with the corsage in her son's honor.
'A Night I'll Never Forget With a Person I'll Always Remember💔🕊️#LLJUSTIN #Prom2025 Thank you to everyone who was a part of making the moment so memorable!' Reyaa wrote on Instagram. 'The world knows his name and that warms my heart!! And Justin, mann we DEFINITELY showed out in our rose gold! I miss you so much man so much, but I know you were with me🥹!!'
The teen's post was flooded with comments of support - even one by music artist Mariah the Scientist who wrote 'Reya & Justin 4ever.' While Reyaa did her late friend justice by bringing him to prom, the sheriff's office is working to bring justice to his family.
Police announced the arrest of Jarvis Hinton Jr., a 16-year-old suspect in Etienne's shooting. He's been charged with murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person under the age of 18 and reckless conduct. Hinton isbeing held in the Newton County Detention Center.

Becky G, Ivan Cornejo, Maná lead Latinx musicians' response to the ongoing L.A. ICE raids

A number of Latinx musicians have expressed their solidarity and support for immigrant communities via social media in the wake of immigration raids that have resulted in the arrest of 330 people in Southern California and the Central Coast. In a lengthy Instagram video posted Saturday, TV personality and two-time Grammy-nominated singer Chiquis held back tears as she addressed the raids and reminded her fans to 'treat people like you want to be treated.' 'United we stand, divided we fall apart, you guys,' she said. 'If all humans would to get together and be kinder and hold each other's hands and push people a little bit more in a positive way, uplift people, we would be so powerful.' Música Mexicana artist Ivan Cornejo shared in an Instagram post Tuesday that his father had been granted amnesty by the Reagan administration during the '80s. He punctuated his post by sharing the information for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights and added that he'll continue to raise funds for CHIRLA throughout his tour. 'Words cannot express the sorrow that I feel for my community,' the 'Estas Dañada' singer, a native of Riverside, said. 'I see my mom, my dad and myself in many of you. I am speechless at the inhumanity that is affecting our Mexican and Hispanic communities.' 'The people being attacked today are not 'illegal aliens,' they are human beings with RIGHTS,' pop star Becky G said Tuesday in an Instagram post that paid tribute to her immigrant grandparents. 'We must understand that an attack on them is an attack on OUR DEMOCRACY and an attack on what this country was made to stand for.' The 'Otro Capitulo' singer also shared information about what to do if confronted by immigration agents, and listed several advocacy organizations to support. Los Aptos, a first-generation música Mexicana act band from Indiana, posted a segment of their interview with YouTube podcaster Pepe Garza describing their origins, and called for 'a system that is untouchable no matter what a— is in office.' In the same post, Los Aptos provided information on what to do if ICE knocks on your door and an infographic with the rights a person has if they are arrested. Fuerza Regida, one of the most streamed Latin music acts, offered their 'love and strength' to the Latinx community in an Instagram post Tuesday. 'We've been deeply moved by the events of this past week,' the band wrote in the statement. 'These are our people, our fans, the very communities that inspire our music.' Fher Olvera, the lead singer of legendary rock en español band Maná, posted a video on the group's official Instagram on Wednesday expressing his support for the immigrant community in L.A., and asked protesters to remain peaceful. 'That's how you are going to win,' Olvera said in Spanish. Eight-time platinum artist Junior H also chimed in Wednesday, sharing a photo captioned with 'No one is illegal in stolen land.' The 'Rockstar' singer also shared a post from his fashion brand, Sad Boyz Clothing, announcing that a portion of its sales would be donated to 'help cover the legal fees for families impacted by ICE Raids.' 'It's a small gesture, but one we believe matters— because when one of us hurts, we all do,' read the company's statement. The normally tight-lipped Texas band Grupo Frontera also chimed in, writing in an Instagram Story on Wednesday that they 'send strength and resilience to our migrant community.' 'We stand with you. As immigrants, we understand the pain, uncertainty and fear that many are experiencing,' the group said. 'It hurts to see our people go through this and that's why we want to speak out. We support you and we will never stop fighting for our community.'

Brazil court majority favors tougher social media rules

Brazil's Supreme Court reached a majority Wednesday in favor of toughening social media regulation, in a groundbreaking case for Latin America on the spread of fake news and hate speech. The South American country's highest court is seeking to determine to what extent companies like X, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook are responsible for removing illegal content, and how they can be sanctioned if they do not. The judges' final ruling will create a precedent that will affect tens of millions of social media users in Brazil. At issue is a clause in the country's so-called Civil Framework for the Internet -- a law in effect since 2014 that says platforms are only responsible for harm caused by a post if they ignore a judge's order to remove it. By Wednesday, six of the court's 11 judges had ruled in favor of higher accountability, meaning sites should monitor content and remove problematic posts on their own initiative, without judicial intervention. One judge has voted against tougher regulation, and four have yet to express an opinion. "We must, as a court, move in the direction of freedom with responsibility and regulated freedom, which is the only true freedom," Judge Flavio Dino said during Wednesday's session, broadcast online. Not doing so would be like "trying to open an airline without regulation in the name of the right of free movement," he added. Google, for its part, said in a statement that changing the rules "will not contribute to ending the circulation of unwanted content on the internet." - Coup plot - Alexandre de Moraes, one of the court's judges, has repeatedly clashed with X owner Elon Musk and various right-wing personalities over social media posts. The review is taking place in parallel with the Supreme Court trial of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is alleged to have collaborated on a coup plot to remain in power after his 2022 election defeat. Prosecutors say Bolsonaro's followers used social media to lie about the reliability of the electoral system and plot the downfall of successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Last year, Moraes blocked X for 40 days for failing to comply with a series of court orders against online disinformation. He had previously ordered X to suspend the accounts of several Bolsonaro supporters. Musk and other critics say Moraes is stifling free speech, and US President Donald Trump's administration is weighing sanctions against the judge, whom Bolsonaro accuses of judicial "persecution." Lula, who emerged the victor in the tightly-fought 2022 election against Bolsonaro, is advocating for "accelerating regulation" of online platforms. ffb/ll/dga/mlr/des/nl
