Karnataka halves excise licence renewal fees

Hans India26-06-2025
Bengaluru: Facing strong opposition from liquor shop owners and industry stakeholders, the Government of Karnataka has decided to slash the proposed excise licence renewal fees by 50%. The earlier hike, which aimed to double the renewal fees from July 1, had triggered widespread backlash, with traders warning of state-wide protests and economic strain.
The government had initially increased the fees with an ambitious target of generating Rs879 crore in revenue for the state exchequer. However, the steep hike appeared to be a significant burden on licence holders across various categories, including bars, hotels, and retail liquor shops. As a result, several associations and stakeholders demanded an immediate revision. Under the previous proposal, CL9 bar and restaurant licences were set to rise from Rs8.62 lakh to Rs15 lakh, with an additional Rs2.25 lakh cess, bringing the total to Rs17.25 lakh. CL6A star hotel licences were revised from Rs9.75 lakh to Rs20 lakh plus Rs3 lakh cess, totaling Rs23 lakh. Similarly, CL7 boarding and lodging licence fees were raised from Rs9.75 lakh to Rs17 lakh, with Rs2.55 lakh cess, totaling Rs19.55 lakh.
With the revised order, the excise renewal fees across these and other categories will now be reduced by half, effective from July 1. The decision is expected to bring significant relief to the liquor industry.

Bengaluru Needs Rs 1.5 Lakh Crore For Infrastructure, DK Shivakumar Urges PM Modi

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend funding support to Bengaluru on par with Delhi, to enable the city to emerge as a truly global metropolis. In a letter written to Prime Minister Modi, Deputy CM Shivakumar highlighted the challenges Bengaluru is facing due to 'rapid urbanisation'. The letter read, "On behalf of the Government of Karnataka, I warmly welcome you to Bengaluru, the nation's foremost technology and innovation hub. Contributing substantially to the national GDP and hosting India's largest IT/ITES base, global investments, research institutions, and skilled talent, Bengaluru drives the country's economy and innovation. However, rapid urbanisation has created urgent challenges in mobility, water supply, waste management, drainage, housing, and overall infrastructure." Stating that Karnataka is the second-highest tax-paying state in the country, DK Shivakumar said that Bengaluru required an estimated investment of Rs 1.5 lakh crores. "The construction of urban tunnels, the Bengaluru Business Corridor, integrated solid waste management plants, elevated roads along metro lines, flyovers, additional drinking water projects, new roads over storm water drains, and the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) will require an estimated investment of Rs. 1.5 lakh Cr. As Karnataka is the second-highest tax-paying state in the country, contributing about Rs. 4.50 lakh Cr annually to the national exchequer, I request the Government of India to extend funding support to Bengaluru on par with Delhi, enabling the city to emerge as a truly global metropolis," the letter read. Shivakumar further added, "Your continued guidance and assistance will be invaluable in realising the vision of a world-class Bengaluru with sustainable infrastructure and inclusive growth." Earlier in the day, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had alleged that Bengaluru has been neglected and the state government have not been given sufficient funds for the development of the city. "I will tell him what is required and to be given to Bengaluru... We have not been given sufficient funds. Bengaluru has been neglected. I would like to tell PM Modi that you have to take care of the city as a national capital... The MPs or MLAs of the BJP are only getting votes in the name of PM Modi or the party," he said.

Rs48.34L Unpaid Taxes: NMC To Auction 12 Seized Properties In Lakadganj Zone

Nagpur: In a stern crackdown on chronic property tax defaulters, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) seized 12 immovable properties in Lakadganj zone, including a property belonging to Nagpur Improvement Trust, and announced plans to auction them publicly. The action follows non-payment of outstanding dues amounting to Rs48.34 lakh, despite repeated notices and warnings. The seized properties are located in Pardi, Chikhli Devasthan, and parts of Nagpur city. Assistant commissioner of Lakadganj zone, Vijay Thul, confirmed the development and stated that defaulters were given ample time to clear their dues, but they failed to comply. Among the biggest defaulters are Nagpur Improvement Trust, Hindustan Vidya Mandal and AS Viradi Engineering Works (Rs6.18 lakh each), and a group of four Malu brothers (Rs5.36 lakh). Another property owned jointly by four individuals in Gangaram Khungar's name owes over Rs9.75 lakh — the highest on the list. The civic body has set July 31, 2025, as the final deadline for defaulters to settle the dues. If the amount is not paid by then, the properties will be auctioned under Section 45 of Rule 4(1), Chapter 8, Schedule D of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, 1949. The total outstanding amount, including warrant fees, enforcement charges, and public notice expenses, is pegged at Rs48,34,186. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Officials involved in executing the seizures include tax superintendent Roshan Ahire, inspectors Bhushan Motghare, Manish Taywade, Lalappa Khan, and Raj Samratwar, under the guidance of deputy municipal commissioner Milind Meshram. The NMC has also appealed to other property owners in Lakadganj zone to clear their dues by the July 31 deadline to avoid similar action. The civic body's aggressive push comes as part of a broader strategy to recover mounting tax arrears across the city, amid budgetary pressures and increasing demand for civic services. With this auction threat, NMC has signalled a no-tolerance policy for tax evasion, making it clear that habitual defaulters can no longer escape accountability.
