A former Manchester United player has revealed how he stayed at the club despite family concerns over a managerial change and why the decision left him feeling proud
Former Manchester United star Juan Mata has revealed how his family urged him to quit the club after Jose Mourinho was appointed as manager. The Spaniard joined United from Chelsea in January 2014 for a then-club record fee of £37.1million.

The midfielder enjoyed two successful seasons at Stamford Bridge before his departure, winning the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League. However, he later fell out of favour at Chelsea under Mourinho's stewardship and signed for United in pursuit of more playing time.

Mata soon became a popular figure at Old Trafford under David Moyes, but the man who brought him there was sacked just a few months later. He played under several managers during his seven-and-a-half year spell with the Red Devils, including Dutchman Louis Van Gaal and club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But it was the arrival of Mata's former Chelsea boss Mourinho in May 2016 which left his family worried. He has now opened up on how his grandad encouraged him to leave United amid fears the Portuguese coach would freeze him out again.
Mata ultimately chose to ignore the advice and stay to fight for his place in the team. He went on to make 285 appearances for the club and has told former United goalkeeper Ben Foster that he feels pride over deciding to stick to his guns after Mourinho joined.
Speaking on the Fozcast podcast, he said: "The first call that I received was from my family and from my granddad saying, 'You have to leave. What's going to happen?' And I said, 'No, I'm going to see how it goes. I don't have any problem with him, and he doesn't have any problems with me.'

"It is one of the things that I'm most proud of in my career is to have remained, to be calm and say, 'No, I'm going to try to show that I can play in his style.' And I did so. Our relationship was very natural. Actually, we have a good relationship.
"I played games and we won things together. I played in all the finals, so I felt like an important player in his squad. My family told me, 'Okay, you were right,' but they were panicking a little bit."

Mata left United in June 2022 and went on to join Turkish Super Lig team Galatasaray as a free agent later that year. He also had a brief spell with Japanese side Vissel Kobe in 2023, but only made one appearance for the club.
He currently plays for Australian outfit Western Sydney Wanderers, who he signed for in September last year. Mata said he was enjoying his time Down Under after praising both the quality of living in Sydney and the growth of the A-League.

"It's amazing and the lifestyle is incredible," he said. "The city has everything. It's like being in five different cities in one, because you have the CBD (central business district), and all the big buildings. Then you have a nice beach five minutes away.
"The league is growing and football, or soccer as they call it, is coming back to where it used to be a couple of years ago. They suffered a lot with Covid in the sport, but they're coming back, and it's a great place to be."

Penalty rebounds 'could be SCRAPPED for 2026 World Cup' in radical shake-up...as VAR powers also 'face major expansion'

Penalty rebounds could be scrapped entirely under dramatic new plans being considered by football's law-makers - potentially coming into force in time for the 2026 World Cup. The proposal, being discussed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), would see any missed penalty immediately result in a goal-kick, with no chance for the taker or others to score on the rebound, as reported by The Sun. That means iconic moments like Harry Kane 's extra-time rebound against Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-final or Xabi Alonso 's equaliser in Liverpool 's legendary 2005 Champions League comeback would no longer stand under the proposed rules. The idea is to treat a penalty as a single, standalone shot - much like a penalty stroke in hockey. Once the kick is taken, play would stop. If the ball goes in, it's a goal and the game restarts at the halfway line. If it doesn't, it's a goal-kick for the defending side - no corners, no second chances. Officials believe it could help eliminate disputes over encroachment and remove an unfair advantage for the attacking team. Currently, goalkeepers must have one foot on or behind the line, while attackers can pounce on rebounds, which some argue is a double punishment for defenders. The potential law change is being considered as part of a wider review aimed at modernising the game, particularly ahead of the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2026. Any new rules would need to be finalised by the end of February to be introduced in time. Also on the table are plans to expand the scope of VAR. IFAB is looking at allowing video checks for second yellow cards and corners — but only when there's a 'unfair' dismissals or 'clear error' that can be reviewed quickly, without further delays to the game. Discussions over rules changed were during the recent Club World Cup in the US - with some senior figures now backing significant reform.

Former Chelsea manager rushed to hospital after falling ill during training session

Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has been rushed to hospital after falling ill during a Lazio training session on Wednesday. Sarri, 66, was reportedly unwell amid scorching temperatures in Rome that exceeded 30C in the Italian capital. That saw Lazio release a statement to give an update on his welfare later in the day. The club said: 'Coach Sarri is returning to Formello and, as scheduled, will lead the training session at 6:00 PM as usual. 'This morning, he underwent a thorough fitness check, more comprehensive than the tests conducted on the players at the Training Center.' The Italian endeared himself to Premier League fans during his sole season at Chelsea due to his bizarre propensity for chewing cigarette butts on the touchline. He did so to combat the rule that all English stadia were strictly non-smoking venues, which prevented him from puffing away in the dugout as he has done elsewhere during his managerial career. While some fanbases poked fun at those antics, he ultimately had a successful solitary campaign in west London. In addition to guiding the Blues to a third-place finish in the Premier League, he also won the Europa League before leaving his role as Chelsea manager. He followed that up with a single-season spell at Juventus before a one-year sabbatical and a move to the Bianconeri's Serie A rivals Lazio. Sarri then went on have another 15-month sabbatical in 2024 before he was reappointed as Lazio manager on a two-year deal last month. In November last year, Sarri opened up on his exit from Stamford Bridge and admits he feels regret at his decision. 'I could have stayed at Chelsea,' he told The Sun. 'I wanted to come back to Italy because the situation at Chelsea was not easy. In that period Abramovich was not allowed to go to England. 'I only saw him at games abroad. We had some telephone calls but not very often. 'My point of reference was only Marina (Granovskaia - Chelsea director). There wasn't a sporting director so the situation was not so clear. So I wanted to come back to Italy but it was a mistake.
