British Army in Kenya: Some soldiers using sex workers despite ban, inquiry finds
The ITV documentary followed previous concerns raised about Batuk after the death in 2012 of a local woman Agnes Wanjiru, allegedly killed by a British soldier stationed at the base.Since then a string of allegations have been made about the conduct of troops at the training site, which lies near the town of Nanyuki 200km (125 miles) north of Kenya's capital Nairobi.UK Chief of Defence Staff Gen Sir Roly Walker said in a statement that the army was committed to stopping sexual exploitation by those in its ranks."The findings of the Service Inquiry I commissioned conclude that transactional sex is still happening in Kenya at a low to moderate level. It should not be happening at all," he said. "There is absolutely no place for sexual exploitation and abuse by people in the British Army. It is at complete odds with what it means to be a British soldier. It preys on the vulnerable and benefits those who seek to profit from abuse and exploitation," he added. The service inquiry investigation was carried out over more than two years by a panel of four people, including two serving officers, a civil servant and an independent adviser. It investigated the behaviour of troops stationed at Batuk and assessed the army's systems to prevent breaches of its regulation JSP 769 which bans soldiers from paying for sex.The report details 35 instances in which Batuk soldiers were suspected to have paid for sex, since guidance for soldiers on the rule was published in July 2022. During that period 7,666 British soldiers served at the base.It notes that of those, 26 cases happened before training on the new rule was initiated for all army staff in November of that year, with nine reported cases since then. In the majority of cases, the allegation that soldiers had paid for sex was never proven. In addition to those detailed in the report, the Foreign Office told the BBC there was a small number - less than five - cases of alleged use of sex workers currently under investigation. The alleged incidents happened after the inquiry was concluded. The report said that despite the training given by the Army and the control measures in place, the reality was that "transactional sexual activity" by UK personnel in Kenya was still happening, and that "the level is somewhere between low and moderate"."It is not out of control, but the best way for the Army to manage the risk is for the Army to assume it may be at the upper end of that scale between low and moderate," the report added. The report noted efforts by the Army to stamp out the practice, including regular training and the use of "sharkwatch" patrols with a senior officer of Sargeant rank or above deployed to monitor the conduct of junior personnel when they left the base for nights out.The army said it would implement recommendations from the report, including making it easier to dismiss soldiers found to have used sex workers and the implementation of additional training. The report follows years of controversy about the conduct of soldiers at Batuk sparked by an investigation by the Sunday Times in 2021 which revealed the alleged involvement of a British soldier in the murder of Ms Wanjiru, a mother of one whose body was found dumped in a septic tank near a hotel where she had been seen with soldiers on the night she vanished.Separately in Kenya, MPs have been conducting an inquiry into wider allegations of mistreatment of local people by soldiers at Batuk and have heard claims at public hearings of injuries allegedly sustained through the behaviour of British troops and of soldiers fathering children to Kenyan mothers and then abandoning them when they returned home.In June this year a soldier stationed at the base was sent back to the UK after being accused of rape. The Service Inquiry behind the latest report said it had spoken to many local Kenyans and found "the vast majority" of local residents were happy with the presence of the Batuk camp.

More than 140 people have reported crimes to Al Fayed investigation
The Metropolitan Police have said 146 people have come forward to report a crime as part of their investigation into former Harrods boss Mohamed Al Fayed. The number of reports was revealed as part of a video update sent to alleged victims earlier this week. It comes a month after Scotland Yard apologised to alleged victims for the distress they have suffered. In a letter leaked to the BBC, the officer leading the investigation said she was 'acutely aware the case is especially distressing to all those who have suffered'. 'Not least due to the fact that the main suspect will now never directly face justice for his crimes and, for this, I am truly sorry,' Detective Chief Superintendent Angela Craggs wrote. Al Fayed died in 2023 aged 94. The Met is currently conducting an investigation into how it handled historical allegations of offending by the tycoon. It will also look into any potential facilitators and enablers, and whether any misconduct or corruption occurred. A spokesperson for the force said: 'The live investigation into those who could have facilitated or enabled Mohamed Al Fayed's offending continues. 'The way the Met works has moved on immeasurably, and our teams have transformed the way we investigate rape and sexual offences. 'We're working with partners across the criminal justice system to ensure that victim-survivors are at the heart of our response, with a greater focus on suspects and their offending. 'We continue to support all victims and we urge anyone with information, whether they were directly affected by Mohamed Al Fayed's actions, or aware of others who may have been involved or committed offences, to come forward. 'We cannot comment further at this time, but will provide an update as soon as we are able to and where this won't jeopardise criminal or other proceedings.' The force is expected to provide more written or video updates to victims over the coming months. In November, it said detectives were investigating more than five people who may have facilitated the former Harrods boss in his alleged sexual abuse of dozens of women and girls. They are looking at individuals surrounding the businessman who could have enabled him to commit crimes which are claimed to have spanned decades between 1977 and 2014. The force is also facing allegations of police corruption, with The Guardian newspaper reporting that officers were accused of taking bribes to help him persecute staff and avoid accusations of abuse. The Met said it has transformed the way it investigates rape and serious sexual offences and is doing more to put victim-survivors at the heart of its response to these crimes. More than 100 survivors of alleged sexual abuse by Al Fayed have entered Harrods' redress scheme, the department store said last month.

Coronation Street fans 'rumble' what Costello is hiding - and truth about Kit
Coronation Street spoilers have teased a secret involving DI Costello on the ITV soap and fans are convinced it's linked to Lisa Swain's late wife Becky Swain and a Kit Green plot Viewers of Coronation Street are convinced they have rumbled a major twist in an ongoing storyline with Lisa Swain. Perhaps we have all been looking in the wrong direction where corrupt officers may be concerned. Recently Lisa was shown fearing that her late wife Becky, who died years earlier after being hit by a car, may have been a corrupt police officer after comments made by the Radcliffe brothers. Then Kit Green, Lisa's colleague, proved himself to be a little bit dodgy, so when Lisa found out he was looking into Becky's files she confronted him. But now there's speculation Kit might not be the one to watch out for, and he might actually have uncovered something truly shocking. It comes as spoilers revealed DI Costello, Lisa's boss, would warn her to keep away from Kit, while also issuing an almost threat to Kit himself. READ MORE: Emmerdale Vinny star warns of 'shocking and emotional' scenes as new storyline revealed Next week there's an incident with Kit and newcomer Eli, a client who has a meeting at Carla Connor's factory. Later in the week after drama with Kit's partner Sarah Platt, Eli claims he was intimidated. He reports Kit at the station, and soon Costello is questioning him. Taking him into a room, the inspector puts Kit on desk duty for the foreseeable future. He then suggests that if anyone asks why, then to say it's because of his injuries to avoid a formal inquiry. Wanting no one to go digging it seems, this then happens again later on. After the drama with Kit, weeks on from him warning his colleague after he tried to access Becky's files, Costello is still seemingly against the detective. So when he pulls Lisa aside and advises her to stay away from Kit and to keep their relationship as professional, she's left concerned. Taken aback, she'll no doubt wonder what Kit's done, with Costello making a comment about him dragging Lisa down with him. It's clear Costello doesn't want the pair talking, and now fans think there is an ulterior motive. With Lisa having looked into Becky's files and been stopped and Kit facing the same thing, something is surely being covered up. So when Kit admits next week that he dug into things anyway, are we about to find out that Kit knows something, and could this be why Costello is getting him out of the way? According to spoilers Kit claims a case he was working on seemed to be linked to something Becky was working on before her death. Now fans are sure that this may have led to her death and it could see Kit unravel the truth about what happened, and perhaps Costello is the corrupt officer given his desperation to stop things being looked into. Taking to social media one fan theorised: "Costello is bent." Another viewer said: "Definitely thinking it's DI Costello who's corrupt and hiding secrets about Becky/the case? He's satisfied that Lisa is over asking questions but now that Kit is still asking questions he puts him on desk duty." A third fan posted: "For this theory, I have to put my exasperation with Kit as a character to one side. Costello trying to drive a wedge between Lisa and Kit will have the opposite effect. They'll both land on the same page and work together to uncover whatever it is Costello is hiding." One post said: "Does Kit discover something about Becky's death…is the case Tia Wardley's and does someone at the nick give Lisa the heads up about it?" A final tweet read: "My gut is telling me that Kit is actually the good guy, that he discovers a massive cover up involving Costello and it turns out he is the only one Lisa has actually been able to trust all along, my gut may be way wrong but just putting this out there." Emmerdale's Vinny Dingle 'to report attacker to the police' - but it's not Mike
Emmerdale's latest episode saw Vinny Dingle preparing to contact the police after a beating from Mike, but it was teased someone else could be framed on the ITV soap One character faced being framed by Vinny Dingle in Emmerdale over a brutal attack. In sad scenes, Vinny had his fiancée Gabby Thomas believe someone else other than Mike had hurt him while he continued to lie about a theft from the night before. But as Vinny prepared to report the assault to the police during the latest episode, he broke down just moments after a confrontation with pal Kammy. It was Kammy that Gabby assumed had attacked Vinny, while she doesn't know just how badly Vinny was harmed having been kept in the dark about what's been going on lately. It comes as Mike's real identity was exposed as he beat up Vinny during Tuesday's episode, following weeks of Vinny questioning his sexuality ahead of his wedding to Gabby. Mike's real agenda also came to light as he used Vinny's torment against him in a blackmail twist. As fans know, Vinny has been questioning his sexuality ever since his near-kiss with pal Kammy. He's been left torn over whether he wants to be with Gabby despite his love for her, and he started speaking to Mike online who he thought was experiencing a similar situation to him. This is what Mike, actually Graham, had Vinny believe and this week we finally found out he was using it to blackmail him for his money. In violent scenes Mike beat Vinny on the ground before demanding £10,000. With that he fled the scene with Gabby and Vinny's wedding rings, and Vinny covered the whole thing up. Unfortunately for him Kammy sensed something was wrong and kept pushing, but he refused to confide in him. Instead, Vinny deliberately goaded Kammy into going for him cleary to get him to back off but also possibly to frame him for his bruises. The cruel twist saw Kammy shouted at by Gabby who later threatened him in the pub, refusing to listen to his version of events. Kammy later visited Vinny to ask what was going on, baffled by his behaviour. But Vinny screamed at him and refused to admit the truth, leading to Kammy telling him he needed to tell someone whatever was bothering him. In the end Kammy couldn't get through to him and left while Vinny seemed thoughtful, before a conversation with Gabby later on. We saw Vinny search for the number of the local police station on his phone, preparing to click call. But if Vinny does report the attack, could he be about to frame Kammy for the crime to cover up everything? Or might Vinny find the courage to tell the police and Gabby what went on with Mike.
