Asean Higher Education Ministers' Roundtable in Langkawi on June 19
PUTRAJAYA: The Asean Higher Education Ministers' Roundtable: Envisioning the Next Decade and Beyond will be held in Langkawi on June 19, and is expected to outline a new direction for regional higher education, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
He said the roundtable would be one of the main events under the Asean Ministers of Education and Higher Education Roundtables (#EduRoundtables2025) and Events, which will take place on the resort island from June 17 to 19.
"This event will see the participation of education and higher education ministers from Asean member states and Timor Leste, as well as senior representatives from Myanmar and the Asean Secretariat," he said during a briefing with editors-in-chief at the Higher Education Ministry here today.
He said one of the key outcomes of the meeting would be the Asean Leaders' Declaration on Higher Education: Towards an Inclusive, Sustainable and Prosperous Asean, which would serve as a foundational document or new blueprint to strengthen higher education in the region over the next decade.
Zambry said the new declaration would renew and reinforce the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Higher Education adopted at the 27th Asean Summit on Nov 21, 2015.
He said the Asean Senior Officials' Meeting on Education (SOM-ED) held on Feb 14 had also endorsed the implementation of the Asean Global Exchange Mobility and Scholarship (Asean-GEMS) initiative proposed by Malaysia through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS).
"This proposal involves the implementation of an Intra-Asean Scholarship Programme that facilitates smoother student exchanges among Asean countries, free from mobility restrictions, while also providing students with exposure to diplomacy and culture," he said.
Zambry also noted that the 8th Meeting of the Asean Working Group on Higher Education Mobility (AWGHEM) had agreed to place both initiatives on the main agenda of the upcoming roundtable in Langkawi.
Separately, he said that in conjunction with the Madani Rakyat 2025 programme to be held at Lumut Waterfront, Perak, from June 13 to 15, with the theme Higher Education as the Driver of a Madani Nation, the ministry will highlight the role of higher education in advancing the Madani national agenda.
The programme is scheduled to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and will feature various activities involving universities, polytechnics and community colleges.
Commenting on Malaysia's role as Asean Chair this year, Zambry said the ministry had taken a strategic approach by convening two ministerial meetings — one involving education ministers and the other focusing specifically on higher education.
"In this engagement, we want Malaysia to be the heart of Asean higher education excellence by strengthening regional collaboration, including through the empowerment of teaching personnel in areas such as artificial intelligence and the latest technologies," he said. — BERNAMA

According to him, ASEAN's goal to become the world's fourth-largest economy is theoretically attainable due to its demographic projections, strategic geographic positioning, and the vast potential of domestic markets. However, realizing this ambition will depend heavily on consistent structural reforms, political stability, and the collective capacity of member states to create a policy ecosystem that supports investment and innovation. "Achieving this goal will require stronger policy synergy, efforts to bridge gaps among member states, and a long-term vision that is both consistent and adaptable to global dynamics," he said. Looking ahead, Syafruddin believed ASEAN has the potential to become a stabilizing force in global affairs. "The region could advocate for a more equitable multilateral trading system and push for more inclusive global governance," he said. "This vision can only be realized if ASEAN maintains internal cohesion, deepens substantive economic integration, and crafts a consistent external strategy," he noted.

DOSM elected to chair Asean statistics working group for 2026–2027
PUTRAJAYA: The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has been unanimously elected as chair of the Working Group on Data Sharing, Analysis, Dissemination and Communication of Statistics (WGDSA) for the 2026–2027 term. The decision was made at the 23rd Meeting of the WGDSA (WGDSA23), which began yesterday in Putrajaya. The two-day meeting brought together 18 delegates from Asean Member States (AMS) and the Asean Secretariat (Aseanstats), with Myanmar participating virtually. The gathering aimed to strengthen regional statistical cooperation, enhance data transparency and improve communication strategies under the ASEAN Community Statistical System (ACSS). Chief statistician and ACSS15 chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, said in a statement today that the appointment reflected the continued trust of member states in Malaysia's active role in advancing the Asean statistical system. He reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to fostering innovation, inclusivity and resilience in the regional statistical ecosystem, stressing the importance of accessible, reliable and timely statistics in supporting evidence-based policymaking and Asean's integration and development goals. "As we move forward together, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that statistics are communicated clearly, shared meaningfully and used effectively to support Asean's progress. "Malaysia, as Asean chair for 2025, remains committed to promoting statistical cooperation, capacity building and innovation across the region," he said. Discussions at the meeting focused on the implementation of the WGDSA Multi-Year Plan (MYP), expansion of the Asean Statistical Indicators – Consolidated Template (ASI-CT), integration of Application Programming Interfaces (API) for real-time data access, and increased statistical outreach through initiatives such as the Asean Virtual Learning Academy and targeted awareness programmes. Mohd Uzir said the meeting also discussed enhancements to the ASICT data collection template for indicators in areas such as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the manufacturing sector, inflation, population and employment. A key milestone of WGDSA23 was the presentation of Malaysia's preliminary 2025 Action Plan for the Awareness Initiative - an ACSS Annual Priority under the Asean Economic Community (AEC) reporting framework. "The initiative was previously endorsed by the Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) at the 14th Session of the Asean Community Statistical System (ACSS14) in Laos. "As the lead country, Malaysia announced the formation of a dedicated Task Force on Statistical Awareness and Engagement under WGDSA to spearhead its implementation," he said. The outcomes of WGDSA23 will directly inform the ACSS Action Plan 2026–2030, aligned with the broader Asean Community's post-2025 vision, reinforcing the role of statistics in regional integration and policy development.

Russia-Malaysia relations gaining new momentum, says Ambassador
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia remains a longstanding, reliable, and valued partner of Russia, with bilateral ties gaining renewed momentum, said Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl M. Latypov. Speaking at a reception marking Russia's National Day in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, Latypov said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President Vladimir Putin had held extensive and constructive discussions during Anwar's recent visit to Russia. 'This intensification of dialogue at the highest level clearly reflects the upward trajectory of our bilateral relations. Our cooperation spans a wide range of areas – from trade, investment, and energy, to tourism, education, and cultural and humanitarian exchange. 'It is my hope that the motion along this trend will accelerate further, bringing more benefits to our nations,' he said. Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani represented the government at the event. Also present was Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. According to Latypov, Russia-Malaysia cooperation is grounded in mutual respect and shared benefit, with both countries consistently striving to understand one another's perspectives and to act as true partners. 'Our leaders' exchanges on regional and international matters have shown that the positions of Russia and Malaysia are closely aligned. 'Both of our countries are firm in upholding the principles of international law, sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs. We also coordinate effectively at multilateral platforms, including the United Nations,' he stated. As Malaysia holds the ASEAN Chairmanship this year, Latypov said Russia places great importance on its dialogue with the Association. ASEAN's centrality is founded on inclusiveness, transparency, and equality – with full respect for the identity and interests of all its members, he added. On BRICS, Latypov said Russia is committed to supporting Malaysia's smooth and effective participation in all BRICS partner formats. On Russia's national day, he noted this year holds special significance for Russians as the country solemnly marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War and the Second World War. Russia-Malaysia's diplomatic relations was established in 1967 making it nearly six decades this year. During Anwar's four-day official visit to Russia last month, Putin stated bilateral ties are developing successfully and progressively, with both sides expressing strong interest in making the cooperation more substantive and transparent.
