Markets surge for 2nd day on positive cues
Mumbai:Benchmark Sensex on Monday advanced by 455 points to close at over a week's high due to buying in auto and IT shares following positive macro factors and easing trade worries as US President Donald Trump delayed 50 per cent EU tariffs to July 9.
Rising for the second session, the 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 455.37 points or 0.56 per cent to settle at 82,176.45. During the day, it surged 771.16 points or 0.94 per cent to 82,492.24. The NSE Nifty climbed 148 points or 0.60 per cent to settle at 25,001.15, a level not seen since May 16. The early arrival of monsoon and the Reserve Bank announcing a record Rs 2.69 lakh crore dividend to the government for FY25 also added to the optimistic trend in the markets, experts said.
Among Sensex stocks, leading tractor and auto manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra rose the most by 2.17 per cent. HCL Tech, Tata Motors, Nestle, ITC, Hindustan Unilever, Larsen & Toubro, and Tech Mahindra were the major gainers. In contrast, Eternal, UltraTech Cement, Power Grid, Tata Steel and Kotak Mahindra Bank were among the laggards. Eternal dropped the most by 4.51 per cent. India has become the fourth largest economy in the world, overtaking Japan, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam has said.
The Reserve Bank on Friday announced a record Rs 2.69 lakh crore dividend to the government for FY25, 27.4 per cent higher than 2023-24, helping the exchequer to tide over challenges posed by US tariffs and increased spending on defence due to the conflict with Pakistan. 'The US decision to consider extending the deadline for imposing aggressive tariffs on EU, coupled with a decline in the dollar index, contributed to a rebound in the domestic equity markets. These developments suggest that trade negotiations are progressing constructively, which could help moderate market volatility. 'Additionally, the early onset of the southwest monsoon and a decline in domestic bond yields have encouraged investors to maintain their focus on riskier assets,' Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said.
'Although the market pared most of its early gains, benchmark indices closed above their key psychological levels on steady all-round buying support due to optimism in European indices and mixed Asian cues,' Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said.
The BSE midcap gauge climbed 0.56 per cent and smallcap index went up by 0.48 per cent. Among sectoral indices, auto jumped 1.04 per cent, BSE Focused IT (1.04 per cent), FMCG (0.93 per cent), industrials (0.98 per cent), IT (0.95 per cent), capital goods (0.91 per cent), teck (0.88 per cent) and oil & gas (0.67 per cent).

Meta takes AI firm behind ‘nudify' apps to court over ads on Facebook, Instagram
Meta has said it has filed a lawsuit against a Hong Kong-based company behind 'nudify' apps, as part of its broader crackdown on AI tools that let users generate fake sexually explicit images of individuals without their consent. The tech giant announced it has sued CrushAI app developer Joy Timeline HK Limited to prevent the company from advertising its products on Meta's platforms. 'This follows multiple attempts by Joy Timeline HK Limited to circumvent Meta's ad review process and continue placing these ads, after they were repeatedly removed for breaking our rules,' Meta said in a blog post published last week. The Facebook parent also said it has developed a new AI system capable of finding, detecting, and taking down ads for nudify apps and websites on its platforms more quickly. 'We've worked with external experts and our own specialist teams to expand the list of safety-related terms, phrases and emojis that our systems are trained to detect within these ads,' it said. 'We've also applied the tactics we use to disrupt networks of coordinated inauthentic activity to find and remove networks of accounts operating these ads,' Meta added. The move comes amid a surge in AI-powered 'nudify' apps on the internet. These apps use generative AI to turn full-clothed images into realistic nude images of victims. Reports have previously suggested that students learn about these nudify apps or websites through ads on Instagram and other social media platforms. In addition, Meta's announcement comes nearly a month after US President Donald Trump signed the landmark Take It Down Act into law. The new legislation makes it illegal to to share explicit images of individuals without their consent. Revenge porn as well as fake AI-generated sexual images are also covered under the scope of the new act. Meta said that over the past six months, its 'expert teams' have taken down four separate networks of accounts that sought to run ads promoting nudify apps on its platforms. It also revealed that the bad actors behind these apps would evolve their tactics to avoid detection. 'For example, some use benign imagery in their ads to avoid being caught by our nudity detection technology, while others quickly create new domain names to replace the websites we block,' Meta said. The company further re-emphasised that its updated policies do not allow the promotion of nudify apps or similar services on its platforms. It also restricts search terms such as 'nudify', 'undress', and 'delete clothing' on Facebook and Instagram so they don't show results. Meta said it will start sharing information like URLs in order to enable other platforms to remove nudify-related content as well. So far, it has provided more than 3,800 URLs to tech companies that are part of the Tech Coalition's Lantern programme. This is in addition to the signals about violating child safety activity, including sextortion, that are already shared by Meta. The company finally said it will continue to support legislation that requires app stores like Google Play Store and Apple App Store to verify a user's age and, if the user is underage, obtain parental consent before downloading the app. Such legislation has intensified the clash between app store operators (like Google and Apple) and major social media platforms (such as Meta, X, and Snap) over who is responsible for the online safety of young users. Both Utah and Texas have adopted similar legislation that puts the burden of responsibility on app stores.

BCCI Cuts Allowances, Streamlines Travel Policy; Will Release Pending Allowances
BCCI will release pending daily allowances for staff after revising policy. BCCI The daily allowances for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) staff across departments, pending since January, will be released following the board's senior management streamlining the domestic 'tournament allowance policy'. Under the existing BCCI travel policy, employees receive a per diem of Rs 15,000 for short-term travel (up to four days) and Rs 10,000 for long-term travel, typically for the Indian Premier League (IPL), Women's Premier League (WPL), and ICC events hosted by India. A one-time incidental allowance of Rs 7,500 is also provided during travel. The revised policy removes the incidental allowance. Employees will now receive a flat rate of Rs 10,000 per day while travelling. The IPL window lasts slightly over two months, and ICC events last at least a month. A BCCI source told PTI that after tax deductions at source, the per-day allowance amounts to Rs 6,500. Due to the impending policy revision, BCCI staff, including finance, operations, and media departments, have not received their daily allowances for the IPL and WPL. With the policy now finalised, their dues should be settled soon. 'A clear cut policy was needed in terms of allowances as some employees were claiming allowances even when they were operating out of the Mumbai headquarters during tournaments. Now that it has been devised, the dues will be cleared soon," added the source. For example, an employee travelling for the entire 70-day IPL would receive a daily allowance of Rs 10,000, totalling Rs 7 lakh. Those with limited travel during the IPL can claim only 60 per cent of the 70-day allowance, while those not travelling at all can claim 40 per cent of the amount accrued for 70 days. For foreign travel, most BCCI employees receive USD 300 per day. Honorary office-bearers, including the president, secretary, treasurer, vice-president, and joint secretary, receive a daily allowance of USD 1,000 on foreign tours. They also receive Rs 40,000 for a one-day meeting within India and Rs 30,000 per day for multi-day domestic work trips. First Published:
