Tetteh pledges continued support for Libyan elections plan in Qatar meeting
The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Libya, Hana Tetteh, has reiterated the organisation's commitment to supporting a roadmap for national elections and a unified government in Libya.
Speaking during a meeting in Doha on Sunday with Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, Tetteh stressed the importance of inclusive consultations with all segments of the Libyan population.
According to a statement posted by the UN mission on social media, the talks focused on the latest political developments in Libya and ways to push the peace process forward. Both sides highlighted the need for peace, stability, and security across Libya as essential conditions for political progress.
Tetteh also updated the Qatari official on the recent findings of the UN advisory committee on Libya.
She concluded the meeting by thanking Qatar for its ongoing support for the UN's efforts in the country. Tags: UNSMIL

Dbeibah calls on HoR Speaker to disclose fate of 100 billion dinars spent outside official budget in the past 2 years
Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, has called on Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aqila Saleh, to disclose the fate of more than 100 billion Libyan dinars that were spent outside the official budget over the past two years. Dbeibah reiterated his government's firm rejection of any parallel public spending paths that fall outside legitimate frameworks. The statement came during a meeting Dbeibah held on Monday at the Prime Minister's Office in Tripoli with several members of the High Council of State to discuss current political and economic developments, monitor the government's stability plan, and address efforts to unify institutions and protect the national economy from what he described as "parallel financial chaos," according to the "Hakomitna" platform on Facebook. During the meeting, Dbeibah warned that these parallel financial practices impose massive burdens on the state, as funds are spent in non-genuine areas and later offset through public debt — effectively deducting from citizens' pockets and diminishing the real value of their incomes. He stressed that the Libyan people do not benefit from projects implemented at inflated costs outside the unified financial system, questioning: 'What's the point of projects implemented at double the cost, only to be paid for through public debt, which comes directly out of citizens' pockets?' The Prime Minister's comments were a direct reference to ongoing HoR discussions regarding the proposed budget for the 'Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund,' headed by Belgassim Haftar and linked to the parallel government in the east. Dbeibah renewed his demand for Aqila Saleh to reveal the fate of over 100 billion dinars spent outside the official budget in the past two years. He emphasized that this demand is not merely about transparency, but a direct consequence of the impact such spending has had on the Libyan dinar's value and the resulting negative effects on citizens' incomes and market confidence. He noted that several economic experts have warned that approving an alternative budget — despite its legal violations — could directly lead to a rise in the dollar exchange rate in the parallel market, due to shaken financial confidence and increased pressure on reserves. This, in turn, threatens currency stability and the standard of living for Libyans. He said that the national and legal responsibility lies with all institutions to halt this financial spending, defend the unity of public finances, and safeguard the stability of Libya's economy and currency.

Greece seeks agreement with Libya to curb migration flows
Greece is seeking to sign an agreement with Libya to manage the flow of illegal migration from its shores and is calling for greater European support to secure its borders. The move comes amid a significant increase in the number of migrants departing from Libya and North Africa toward Europe since the beginning of this year. According to Germany's Deutsche Welle radio on Saturday, a growing dispute has emerged between Germany and Greece over how to handle the migration issue, with Athens rejecting Berlin's plans to transfer undocumented migrants to Greece. Greek Minister for Migration and Asylum, Makis Voridis, stated last week that there has been an approximately 174% increase in the number of illegal migrants leaving Libya for Greece since the start of the year. He expressed hope for an agreement with Libya to manage and curb illegal migration flows, similar to the 2017 deal between Italy and the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli. While Voridis revealed plans to visit Libya soon to explore a migration management agreement, Deutsche Welle noted that the Greek minister currently lacks a reliable partner in Libya to negotiate such a deal. Additionally, he does not have the financial means to persuade armed groups to halt the migrant boats departing from eastern Libya toward the island of Crete. Under the 2017 agreement, Rome provided financial and technical support to Libyan authorities to prevent boats carrying hundreds of migrants from leaving the Libyan coast. The deal also facilitated the tracking, interception, and return of thousands of migrants who had crossed the Mediterranean toward Europe. Deutsche Welle also pointed to the emergence of a new migration route used by migrants seeking to reach Europe—from the eastern Libyan city of Tobruk to Greece's Crete island. This contrasts with the more commonly used route from western Libya to Italy's Lampedusa Island, which had long been the main path for migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Europe.

UN welcomes progress on Libya's municipal elections
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has welcomed the publication of preliminary voter lists for the second group of municipal council elections by the country's High National Elections Commission (HNEC). In a statement posted on its official "X" platform on Monday, UNSMIL described the move as an important step forward in strengthening the ongoing electoral process in Libya. The mission urged all registered Libyan citizens to verify their electoral data, either through the commission's website or at polling centres, to ensure their eligibility for participation in the upcoming local elections. UNSMIL reaffirmed its continued support for Libya's relevant institutions as they work toward holding free and inclusive elections — a critical step in advancing the country's democratic path and promoting public participation in local governance.
