‘The implications are disturbing', Martin says when grilled in Dail on claims made about unnecessary child hip surgeries

The Taoiseach told the Dail that the audit was at 'an advanced stage' and warned against worrying parents through a 'drip feed' of information.

'We've been raising it with you, conscious of all of those parents who are now asking themselves, was my child operated on (unnecessarily)? How could this have happened and what are the consequences now?'

She accused the Government and Children's Health Ireland of having 'stonewalled' parents.
Taoiseach
He said he was conscious of the 'anxiety and concern' from parents as surgery for a child is traumatic for that family.
But he said that 'bits of information here and there' would only add to parents' worry.

He added: 'Anything we do in here must be done with that in mind, that we're very conscious of anxiety that can be added to or created by anything we say, or by piecemeal information or by drip feed, in respect of this issue.
'To me, an experience tells me that when you ask someone to do an external audit, independently of politicians and of government, just let them finish their work.'
'DISTURBING'
Asked again about the issue by Aontu leader Peadar Toibin, Mr Martin said that the possible implications of the report are 'disturbing'.
'The implications are disturbing, if indeed some of the assertions come home to be the case, or emerge to be truthful.
'I think there are issues already, as I outlined in an earlier reply, changes to practice and protocols has occurred in terms of multidisciplinary approach, in terms of pre-operative assessment, and that clearly wasn't there, it seems, in advance of this.'
Our Kids Can't Wait Campaign
WAITING lists in Ireland have long been a national disgrace.
More than 106,000 children are on hospital waiting lists for all treatments. However, a new source of shame has emerged as 327 children wait for life changing spinal surgeries.
Their conditions are getting worse while they languish on waiting lists.
Such are the delays, many child patients will be outside the therapeutic window when their treatments are approved.
Earlier this month, the Seanad heard how at least one child has become permanently paralysed since the issue was raised publicly before Christmas.
Their plight has been spearheaded by campaigning Senator Tom Clonan, who himself has a child with a disability.
Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has even admitted that the health service is failing these kids.
Children are being allowed to deteriorate due to mismanagement, which has allowed the waiting lists to grow.
The Irish Sun's Kids Can't Wait campaign aims to shine a light on how the State is failing sick children and give their families a voice.
It will also force the Government to do something to clear the backlog of operations and give these children a chance of living a normal life.

Four arrested and three cautioned following protests against pro-Gaza march

Four men have been arrested in Co Down following what police have termed a minor disorder associated with a protest against a march for Gaza. Activists took part in a Great March for Gaza event on Saturday from Lurgan to Omeath, designed to symbolise the length of the Gaza Strip during a demonstration and fundraising event. However, disorder broke out as the march passed through the village of Scarva where a counter-protest was held. Police said four men were arrested following minor disorder associated with the Scarva portion of the event. Three men were also cautioned in relation to public order offences at the towpath between Portadown and Newry. In Newry, a flag believed to be associated with a prescribed terrorist organisation was removed from a parade participant by police. Superintendent Norman Haslett said it was an appropriate and proportionate operation. "Police officers were in attendance at an event which commenced in Lurgan and continued into Newry on Saturday June 7," he said. "We were also present at a number of protests that were held in connection with this event. "Three males were cautioned in relation to public order offences at the towpath between Portadown and Newry and four males were arrested following minor disorder associated with a protest held at the Main Street in Scarva. "These protests had not been notified to the Parades Commission as required by law and officers issued warnings to this effect. "An evidence-gathering operation was in place and we will now review the footage gathered and consider any potential offences. "In Newry, a flag believed to be associated with a prescribed terrorist organisation was removed from a parade participant by police and this is subject to an ongoing police investigation. "This was an appropriate and proportionate policing operation to ensure that the safety of everyone involved was maintained and that the law was upheld." Sinn Fein Upper Bann MLA John O'Dowd commended the Lurgan branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) for organising the march. "On Saturday, thousands walked the equivalent length of the Gaza Strip to show our support for the defenceless civilians of Palestine who continue to face displacement, ethnic cleansing and starvation," he said. "It is no longer acceptable to stand by while Israel commits war crimes. Those complicit must finally act to end this campaign of murder and terror. "I want to commend Lurgan IPSC and all who helped make Saturday's march a success. "Unfortunately, a number of Israeli flags were placed along the route, as well as some protesters, but this did not affect the spirit or determination of those taking part. "We must continue to increase pressure on the international community to isolate Israel through boycott, divestment and sanctions until its systematic genocidal policies are brought to an end."

Former Cork prison could become new 300-bed facility under plan to tackle overcrowding

The Taoiseach says there are few alternatives to reusing the former Cork prison site to provide extra prison spaces. Micheál Martin made his comments as political opposition mounts against the proposal which came before Cabinet last week as part of a package of measures designed to ease chronic overcrowding in the prison system. Justice minister Jim O'Callaghan wants to create 960 extra prison spaces over the next five years to tackle the serious overcrowding problem in jails, which has seen an 11% surge in inmate numbers in the last year alone, with the country's prison capacity now operating at 115%. His plan includes demolishing the old Cork prison on the city's northside and building a new facility on the site with more than 300 jail spaces — 230 for men, and 100 for women. The old Victorian-era prison on Rathmore Rd closed in 2017 when inmates transferred to the new €45m purpose-built 296 bed capacity jail nearby. The new prison has seen a 25% increase in its daily "in custody" figures in the last five years. The old prison has been vacant since. In April, the Irish Examiner first reported how Mr O'Callaghan wanted to use the old prison site to facilitate an extension of the current jail. That prompted criticism from Sinn Féin TD for Cork North Central Thomas Gould and from Labour city councillor John Maher, who said the northside doesn't need another jail. But when Mr O'Callaghan's proposals to demolish the old prison and rebuild it to provide more prison spaces were made public last week, they both promised a campaign of opposition. 'Not an easy choice' Mr Martin said he appreciates local concerns, but he said there is huge pressure on prison spaces. 'The minister of justice is responding in the immediate short term and medium term to provide additional spaces, to make sure our criminal justice system is fit for purpose, that when people are sentenced in court, there's a prison [space] for them,' he said. 'It's not an easy choice. There are few alternatives to the minister. He's pressing ahead to provide not just in Cork but hundreds of additional places across the country.," Mr Martin added. Cabinet also heard proposals to extend Castlerea Prison to house an extra 150 prisoners, to extend the Midlands Prison for 180 additional prisoners, to build a new block for 100 prisoners at Wheatfield, to make 150 extra spaces available at Mountjoy, and to provide another 50 spaces for female inmates at the Dóchas centre. In April, Mr O'Callaghan said there is an overcrowding crisis in the prisons and more prison spaces are needed. 'The old Cork prison site is land that we own, and I would like to see it used for an extension of Cork prison in the future,' he said. The Irish Prison Service said the old prison building has been unoccupied for almost eight years, is in a poor physical state and unsuitable for use in its current form. The Irish Prison Service budget was increased by €79m, or 18%, to €525m in the 2025 budget. Its capital budget is €53m this year, up €22.5m on the original allocation, which is focused on bringing on the target of an additional 1,500 prison spaces. Extra resources have also been provided to recruit extra prison officers and to fund 130,000 additional staff hours in the State's prisons. Protest held in Dublin over lack of additional needs education provision

More info Scores of people have taken part in a demonstration in Dublin calling for action over a shortage of education provision for children with additional needs. It comes after a number of children with autism have not yet received an allocated school place. The Equality in Education protest assembled at the Garden of Remembrance, with many holding banners calling for equality in education provision. It comes after the group slept outside Leinster House in April to highlight the issue. A number of representatives from Opposition parties were in attendance. Sinn Fein president Mary Lou McDonald said the children are being failed. 'These are children who have an equal right to a full education as any other child. They have parents who in many cases have written literally dozens of applications to various schools only to be told that their child cannot be accommodated,' she said. 'They have mounted a campaign which has seen them sleep outside the Dail… they're here today to simply say that no child should be left behind. Every single child is entitled, socially, morally and legally to an appropriate school place. 'The Government talk a lot about the needs of people with disabilities, they're talking about prioritising the needs of children, well, we're not seeing that here, what we see here are stressed-out, traumatised and very, very distressed parents, and children who are being failed comprehensively. That needs to change. 'Government is well aware of this issue.' Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content.
