Kate Garraway says it's 'tough to balance the budget' amid £800k debts

Daily Mirror11 hours ago

Kate Garraway has said it's 'tough to balance the budget' after previously admitting she's been left with up to £800K in debt following the death of her husband, Derek Draper.
Kate Garraway says it's tough to 'balance the budget' after racking up between £500,000 and £800,000 of debt while caring for her late husband, Derek Draper.
Talking at the King's Trust Awards with TK Maxx and Homesense, the Good Morning Britain presenter said of the cost of care, 'It's definitely tough to balance the budget, I feel like carers often don't have a voice so I'm here to shout about it and the costs that go unnoticed.

"I wouldn't want to be the chancellor right now with the costs going on overall right now.'

Broadcaster Kate, 48, cared for her husband Derek for four years as he suffered from an agonising health battle after contracting Covid-19 in 2020 and being left with long Covid, with the family faced with sky high costs to look after him.
'Derek's care costs more than my salary from ITV and that is before you pay for a mortgage, before you pay any household bills, before you pay for anything for the kids, so we are at a crunch point,' Kate said before Derek's passing.
Kate returned to work on Good Morning Britain weeks after Derek's death in January last year, and has since been an advocate for carers across the country.
'I think some people are probably a bit tired of me going on about carers and the lack of support, but I won't because they need a voice,' said Kate.
The broadcaster has been supported by several of her colleagues amid the difficult time, and detailed her close relationship with former co-presenter Ben Shephard.

'Ben and I are great friends, I always see him in the studio on Thursdays because I'm in for GMB and he's in for This Morning, so it's lovely. He's actually not happy with me right now because we've been meaning to go for lunch and haven't yet. I owe him a lunch!'
Hot off the heels of visiting Buckingham Palace a day prior to the King's Trust Awards, Kate said she was grateful to His Majesty for his continued support of her. 'The king has a very charming personality and he's always been so kind to me. He's looking really well and healthy too, which was really nice to see,' shared Kate.
'The Kings Trust Awards is always a very special occasion and now Good Morning Britain is part of an award too so I feel like I can get involved anymore,' she explained, referencing the show's involvement in the volunteer of the year award, which was won by Nabilla Zulfiqar.
The King's Trust Awards, which began in recognise young people who have improved their own chances in life and had a positive impact on their local community.

Shark attack at 'Ant and Dec beach' leaves teenager in serious condition

A shark attacked a boy at Cabarita Beach on Sunday and he is now in hospital with serious arm injuries A teenage boy has suffered serious injuries after being bitten by a suspected Great White shark at a beach in New South Wales regularly used by TV hosts Ant and Dec. Australian emergency services were called to Cabarita Beach, between Tweed Heads and Byron Bay, at 3.50pm on Sunday after the attack. ‌ Surfers and two off-duty paramedics rushed to the boy's aid, reportedly applying a tourniquet to help restrict the bleeding. ‌ The teen suffered injuries to his arms and hands and was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a "serious but stable" condition. ITV hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, have regularly been spotted enjoying downtime at Cabarita Beach in Australia during the filming of " I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!". They were seen having lunch together at a local cafe and also have been pictured enjoying the beach with their families including regularly swimming there. In NSW, Australia, shark fatalities are rare but it is thought there have been three deaths since 2021. The recent attack comes just weeks after a 17-year-old girl was mauled to death by a shark while swimming at a popular tourist spot at Bribie Island, north of Brisbane. ‌ Emergency services had rushed to the scene, with victim Charlize Zmuda treated for life-threatening upper body injuries. Tragically, she later died. Her devastated family said after the incident that they wanted to focus on "incredible life she lived and not the awful way she died". They said in a statement: "Charlize was loved by many and was such a shining light who truly touched the lives of everyone she met." Local Chris Potter told the Courier Mail at the time of what he saw as the devastating scenes unfolded: "People originally thought she had just been caught in a rip. "It was shocking."

Princess Kate's awkward Wimbledon moment with sister Pippa caught on camera

The Princess of Wales is known as a huge tennis fan and took Princess Charlotte and her sister Pippa to Wimbledon's mens singles final last year - but there was an awkward moment after the match with champion Carlos Alcaraz Wimbledon kicks off once again tomorrow - and there's one member of the Royal Family who will be overjoyed. The Princess of Wales is known to be a huge tennis fan and is a regular in Centre Court's royal box to watch the thrilling action. Last year, Kate made just her second public appearance after revealing after cancer diagnosis at the All England Club, where she enjoyed the mens singles final alongside daughter Princess Charlotte and her sister Pippa Matthews. There the trio watched as Carlos Alcaraz was crowned champion for a second time after a thrilling victory over Novak Djokovic. ‌ ‌ Pippa sat alongside her sister and niece in the Royal Box and looked on proudly when Kate presented Alcaraz with his trophy after the match. Once completing his on-court celebrations, the Spaniard got another chance to chat with Kate as members of the All England Club came out to congratulate the champion as he made his way to the locker room. During their chat, Kate introduced him to Charlotte before asking him who his favourite football player was ahead of Spain's Euros final match against England that was happening on the same day. But there appeared to be an awkward moment when Pippa tried to take the opportunity to chat with Alcaraz but he accidentally ignored her. It came as Kate wrapped up her chat with two-time Wimbledon champion and told him to enjoy his win. Pippa, who was standing a step back from her sister and niece, then gestured forward as if to congratulate him - with Kate also trying to attract his attention towards his sister. But at the exact same moment, someone in the crowd to the side grabbed Alcaraz's attention and he unintentionally ignored them. After being left hanging for a second, the two women then began to applaud as he walked off towards the locker room with his trophy. It came after Kate and Charlotte were greeted with cheers and applause as they took their seats in the front row of the royal box at Centre Court. Actors Tom Cruise, Benedict Cumberbatch and Julia Roberts were among the other famous faces in the royal box for last year's final. ‌ It has not been confirmed yet if Kate is set to attend SW19 during the Wimbledon fortnight as she is still gradually returning to royal duties following her cancer treatment. Confusion was sparked last week when it was announced that Kate, who is in remission from cancer, would not be attending the second day of Royal Ascot festival. It came after her name originally appeared on the official list of those taking part in a carriage procession alongside her husband Prince William as well as the King and Queen. When it was confirmed that she would not be attending, sources said she is still trying to find the right balance following her cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy treatment.
