Lots of characters returned for ‘SNL50.' We wish these beloved classics were among them
The 'SNL50: The Anniversary Special' was a walk down memory lane for viewers of the long-running NBC sketch show. Classic characters, like Mike Myers as Linda Richman, were mixed in with newer hit sketches like Marcello Hernández's suave Domingo, who introduced us to his 'hot brothers,' for a rousing good time.
While it would have been impossible to cover all the bases (we miss you Chris Kattan/Mr. Peepers!), there are some inarguably classic sketches and characters that would have been great to see represented during the celebration.
A nostalgic list of some of them follows:
'Wayne's World'Myers and Dana Carvey reunited for a 'Wayne's World' sketch for SNL's 40th anniversary, so maybe they didn't want to repeat the move just ten years later. That said, doing so would have really been a 'party on' moment.
'Target Lady'Kristen Wiig is known for many things, but her 'Target Lady' reigns as one of her most popular 'SNL' characters. Though the anniversary special was jam-packed, we certainly missed Wiig's Target Lady saying super weird stuff to customers at checkout.
'The Californians'Sure, we got this recent fun commercial for Volkswagen featuring the famed 'Californians' trio of Wiig, Bill Hader and Fred Armisen, but it sadly was not part of Sunday's show. We're chalking this up to Hader not being present for the special. (A representative for Hader previously told CNN the actor had a schedule conflict.)
'Church Lady'Dana Carvey was present for most of this 'SNL' season playing former US President Joe Biden but he did not show up on the air on Sunday's anniversary special, except for a brief moment in a photo during a Black Jeopardy sketch. This means we didn't get to see his sassy, politically-charged Church Lady. It would have been so very 'special.'
'Whiskers R We'Another classic was Wiig's collaboration with Kate McKinnon for their 'Whiskers R We' characters. Barbarba DeDrew and Furonica – 'like Veronica, but how a cat would say it' – were the pun-loving feline fans who wanted to help get some cats adopted and were also in love with each other. Perhaps bringing live animals out during the anniversary special would've been too chaotic so, we get it.
'NPR's Delicious Dish'This felt like the perfect opportunity to bring on Margaret Jo McCullin and Terry Rialto, played by Ana Gastyer and Molly Shannon, respectively, for another gleefully boring episode of 'NPR's Delicious Dish.' Considering Alec Baldwin was also in the house, we're disappointed that he, as Pete Schweddy, didn't bring everyone a box of his Schweddy Balls.
'Spartan Cheerleaders''SNL' fan-favorite Cheri Oteri appeared to be absent on Sunday, but she was missed. How fun would it have been to see her and Will Ferrell reprise their famed Spartan Cheerleader characters Craig and Arianna? We're betting they'd be proud to show off some new moves.
'Gumby'While we were thrilled to see Eddie Murphy back on Studio 8H, we were a little saddened that he didn't take things way back and do an updated rendition of his take on Gumby. Sure, we last saw the rich piece of gum just a few years ago, but there's plenty of new things for him to be angry about these days.

Hoda Kotb reveals top replacements for ‘Today,' addresses Kelly Clarkson rumors
NEW YORK — Hoda Kotb on Thursday revealed the people she thinks would be a perfect replacement for the hour of 'Today' she hosted with Jenna Bush Hager, while also addressing speculation she may be taking over Kelly Clarkson's daytime talk show. Since Kotb's departure in January, Bush Hager has continued to host the show's fourth hour with a series of celebrity guests, including Scarlett Johansson, Taraji P. Henson, Keke Palmer, Amy Poehler and Dwyane Wade. Appearing on Bravo's 'What What Happens Live With Andy Cohen,' Kotb shared her top 'contenders' to take up a more permanent position. 'Anybody would be like so lucky, but to me the contenders are ['Today' co-anchor] Savannah [Guthrie]. I think she would be great,' Kotb said. 'I think Justin Sylvester's amazing. Scarlett Johansson crushed it.' Kotb also praised comedian and podcaster Matt Rogers and 'Today' co-host Sheinelle Jones, who she acknowledged is 'going through a difficult time' following the recent death of Jones' husband, Uche Ojeh. But according to Kotb, the best fit for the show would ultimately be 'whoever clicks great with Jenna. I mean, that's the one.' During her appearance, Kotb also suggested there's no truth to the rumors she'll take over Clarkson's self-titled show, but admitted she'd 'never say never.' 'You don't know what life's gonna bring you,' she told a fan who asked about the possibility. 'At this moment, I'm having such fun with the ride that I'm on. But TV is my first love. So, as I say in life, you don't know.' The NBC mainstay announced in September that she would be leaving 'Today' after 17 years, including five as co-anchor. 'I realized that it was time for me to turn the page at 60, and to try something new,' Kotb said at the time. The decision was made in no small part so Kotb could spend more time with her two young daughters, Haley Joy, 9, and Hope Catherine, 5, whom she shares with ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman. By the end of the year, Kotb announced that fellow NBC veteran Craig Melvin would take over her role anchoring the 7-9 a.m. block alongside Guthrie.

Patricia Arquette's ‘Severance' character talks like that because ‘she thinks that's what power sounds like'
Even after two seasons of Severance, Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette) remains an enigma. The woman occasionally known as 'Mrs. Selvig' seems like the ultimate example of Lumon's management style, and yet she herself is constantly at loggerheads with her superiors. She apparently invented the severance procedure as we know it, and yet helps Mark Scout (Adam Scott) break through it. Many mysteries remain as Severance fans look forward to Season 3, but certain things about Cobel can be explained in the meantime. In a new interview with Gold Derby, Arquette says that she is responsible for both the character's look and her mannered way of speaking. 'I felt like her hair should be a little older than she is. But also I wanted to have this affected, weird voice. I liked this idea that she's got this affected voice because she thinks that's what power sounds like. That's what these middle managers sound like. It's probably something she heard in school and you hear it a little bit from her aunt when you see the squalor she actually grew up in. So this is a made-up voice, a voice of success, and it's become this corporate sound.' Arquette continues, 'there's also an inscrutability when you're raised in an organization or structure [like Lumon], where you're not supposed to feel your feelings. You're supposed to swallow your feelings and you're not supposed to tell everyone what's going on or you'll get in trouble. You learn to play things close to the vest. I don't think Harmony's ever been really safe in her life anywhere or with anyone. And then when we went to Salt's Neck, it was like, 'Wow, this is a very Bergman-looking color palette, with actual icebergs floating by.' If your character looked like a piece of nature, she would look like an iceberg.' Cobel was not as prominent in Severance Season 2 as she was in Season 1, since she lost her position both at Lumon and as Mark's next-door neighbor. But she was able to take the spotlight in the episode 'Sweet Vitriol,' in which viewers followed Cobel back to her hometown of Salt's Neck — once the location of a major Lumon ether factory, now a left-behind wasteland full of poverty and addiction. Among other things, the episode revealed that Cobel basically invented the severance chip, despite getting little credit for it. It seems like a paradox that the Lumon employee responsible for its most important technology also defies upper management as often as Harmony does, but Arquette says that paradox is central to Severance. 'It may seem like a perversion, but honestly, her interior unresolved story informs the creation of the severance chip,' Arquette says. 'She's trying to prove something through this thing. There is a synchronicity between the severance chip and her interior landscape. They are very closely wedded to each other, these two things. It's not accidental.' The epidemic of ether addiction that pervades present-day Salt Neck is also no accident. Think of it, Arquette says, like an earlier attempt at separating people's work memories from the rest of their life. 'Ben [Stiller] wanted this rotting factory town,' Arquette says of Salt Neck. 'This is an early version of Lumon's attempt to create a corporate town, and these are the vestiges left over after the poisoning of the water and the ether factory and everyone becoming addicts. In a weird way, ether is an early form of severance. It's like the drug of forgetting. So what if you could forget, like with ether, but without the drug? Well then you would need a chip, and that's severance.' Columbus contortionist appears on America's Got Talent
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A Columbus resident who was born with the gift of contortion is in the running to potentially be the next best talent in America. Amadou Diallo moved to Columbus from Conakry, Guinea, in 2024 and recently appeared on the newest season of America's Got Talent on NBC. Diallo's talent not only got the approval from all of the show's judges but also made jaws drop during his showcase. Diallo is a contortionist who always knew he was super flexible, but didn't put his talent to use until 2017. He started using his unique and challenging poses as a form of art and entertainment. Health-centric café featuring smoothies, breakfast wraps to open in Hilliard Auditions for AGT were a dream come true for Diallo, who has the chance to appear in the live shows. Diallo appeared on the show's season premiere, earning positive feedback that described Diallo's act as 'amazing.' Diallo received a 'yes' from judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Sofia Vergara. 'I can't believe I got to perform on the stage,' Diallo said. 'It's my dream to perform… I want to win.' Along with practicing his contortion acts until 3 a.m., Diallo was working two jobs. However, Diallo found his inspiration through his twin brother, who still lives in Guinea. Diallo hopes to be reunited with his brother in the U.S. If chosen for the live shows of AGT, Diallo said he will continue to work harder on his skills, helping him move on in the competition. While on his journey, Diallo is also hoping to see more opportunities with his contortion acts in the Columbus area as well. Season 20 of America's Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC4.
