Pune airport plans time bound entry system to curb congestion

Time of India2 days ago

Pune: The Pune airport will soon implement a time-based pick-up and drop-off system for private vehicles to curb congestion on the premises.
Vehicles flouting the rule will be penalised, authorities said.
"Many private vehicles are parked along the arrival and departure areas for an extended period, resulting in congestion. Although there are four to five wardens on the premises to manage the traffic, we need to manage the situation," Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke told TOI.
Under this system, the entry of all vehicles will be timed, and the same will be checked upon exit.
"If it is found that the timing exceeds the stipulated period, a fine will be imposed.
However, we are yet to decide on the timing and the fines. This system is already in place at many airports," Dhoke said.
AeroMall's vice president, YS Rajput, confirmed the problem.
"We have our wardens stationed at the airport to streamline the traffic. However, on average, we are charging a penalty of Rs500 to at least 10 people as a last resort daily. Many people enter the airport under the pretext of dropping off or picking up flyers and park their cars for a long time.
As per the existing system, we impose fines on vehicles that do not have a driver present. Many cars have a person sitting in the driver's seat, claiming they will move soon, but don't.
The wardens have been directed to levy a fine only during peak hours to manage the traffic," Rajput told TOI.
Back in 2019, the airport had a time-bound system, under which any car found waiting on the premises for more than three minutes was fined Rs340.
Before this, until 2016, car owners had to ensure they left the airport premises within seven minutes, failing which they were fined Rs85. At present, commercial vehicles like cabs are only allowed to drop passengers at the airport and no pick-up are allowed. Private vehicles are allowed to enter the premises for both pick-ups and drop-offs.
Prantosh Singhal, a regular flyer who lives in Koregaon Park, said the matter needed urgent attention.
"In late evening, many cars are lined up in almost all lanes. It simply increases the chaos. People walking towards the AeroMall or the cab pick-up area have to bear the brunt. Besides, vehicles are also lined up all along the New Airport Road and Symbiosis College Road. I wonder why these vehicles can't spend some money and park at the Aeromall?" Singhal said.
Nishith Patil, a Kharadi resident who flew from Delhi recently, said, "We waited for the bus for around 8-10 minutes as even the bus lane was occupied by some cars. The old building had a system to address the problem, and despite criticism, it was a good move and acted as a deterrent. The authorities should carefully calculate the timing and fix it so that the fine levied is rightful and can't be questioned," the business professional said.

MSRDC wants to make Mum-Pune E-way 10-lane superhighway

Pune: MSRDC wants to transform the Mumbai-Pune Expressway into a 10-lane superhighway to tide over traffic snarls and cater to the future demands of vehicular movement along the corridor, one of the busiest in the country. "This is an upgrade from our earlier proposal to make the expressway an eight-lane facility. The latest upgrade will cost around Rs1,420 crore. The DPR is being finalised and will be submitted to govt for approval," Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) vice-chairman and managing director Anilkumar Gaikwad told TOI on Friday. Inaugurated in 2002, the expressway is a 94.6-km stretch connecting the bustling metropolis of Mumbai to Pune, Maharashtra's industrial and educational hub. It currently carries an estimated 65,000 vehicles daily during weekdays. The number increases to over 100,000 during weekends. With traffic volume increasing by approximately 5-6% on a year-on-year basis, the MSRDC's proposed expansion is seen as a long-term solution to the congestion. The latest project involves widening of the current infrastructure. While the construction cost is expected to be around Rs8,440 crore, the overall average cost of the project will be Rs 14,260 crore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like เทรด Bitcoin และ Ethereum - ไม่ต้องใช้กระเป๋าเงิน! The financing model — whether Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) or annuity — is yet to be decided. The current toll collection for the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is valid till 2045. MSRDC would seek an extension if the expressway widening gets approval to make the project self-sustaining. At present, the journey between Mumbai and Pune takes about two hours under normal conditions. However, weekend rush hours and holiday traffic can stretch that drive by an additional hour. According to MSRDC, the proposed expansion could virtually eliminate this extended travel time, offering smoother rides even during peak periods. If approved and executed as envisioned, the expansion could become one of India's most ambitious road infrastructure upgrades — a critical step toward matching the country's rapid growth in vehicle ownership with high-capacity transit corridors, an MSRDC official said. MLA Mahesh Landge has in a social media post recently said the expansion would ensure necessary respite from traffic congestion on the e-way. "This is a long-awaited demand. The expansion is needed considering the heavy traffic along the e-way," he told TOI. People frequently travelling on the e-way are of the view that the state govt should not delay in the expansion work and carry out the project in phases to ensure that there was no traffic congestion. "Frequent traffic snarls are becoming an impediment for travellers. The expansion proposal should be immediately cleared and work should commence," said Manisha Khandekar, a frequent traveller. The expressway — which begins at Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai and ends at Kiwale near Pune — is India's first access-controlled express highway. While work on the 13-km "missing link" project is on, which will facilitate 10 lanes in the Khandala Ghat section, the proposed expansion would cover the remaining 67km of the route. According to MSRDC, land acquisition challenges were expected to be minimal. "MSRDC already holds land adjacent to most parts of the existing expressway. Only limited additional land near tunnels will be needed. These land parcels are near the tunnel zones," said an official involved with the project. Traffic chaos on cable bridge as moving car catches fire

1 2 Hyderabad: A moving car caught fire on the Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge on Friday. Fortunately, there were no casualties as the occupants were able to exit the vehicle in time. The incident occurred at around 4.15 pm when the car with two passengers was travelling towards Jubilee Hills. According to Cyberabad traffic police, car caught fire due to electrical issue. "The vehicle had an Andhra Pradesh licence plate and was registered to a resident of Madhapur," said a Madhapur traffic police official. Two fire tenders, one each from Madhapur and Vattinagulapally, were dispatched to the spot along with the department's firefighting robot, 'Rhyno Protect.' "It took around 40–45 minutes to extinguish the fire. We used foam and water as the car was burning with fuel inside it. Around 80% of the car was burnt," said an official from the Madhapur fire station. Meanwhile, the incident caused traffic disruption, leaving commuters stranded on the bridge. "There was a massive traffic jam extending for nearly two kilometres to the IKEA store. There were many disaster response personnel on bikes. While it usually takes five minutes to travel from IKEA to the cable bridge, today it took around 30 minutes," a commuter told TOI.
