Delhi police arrests over 4K criminals in six months
'The campaign, titled Crackdown-2025, was initiated in January this year across the South and Southeast districts of the capital,' said Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) SK Jain.
The Southern Range executed four major operations, Garuda, Vajra, Shastra, and Nischay, resulting in a drastic reduction in street crime and a major dent in illegal activities, the officer added.
Between January 1 and June 30, 4,300 arrests were made across the Southern Range, along with the recovery of 609 stolen mobile phones, 23 pistols, 149 country-made firearms, 241 live cartridges, and 250 knives. Police also seized over 262 kg of ganja, 6.6 kg of charas, 1.3 kg of smack, and synthetic drugs like methaqualone. In addition, illicit cash worth over Rs 1 crore was recovered, along with stolen gold, diamonds, and household items. Police said that under Operation Garuda, 421 foreign nationals, comprising 336 Bangladeshi and 85 African-origin people, were deported.

Delhi has recorded the worst recovery rate in the country for lost or stolen mobile phones — a meagre 1.87%, far below the national average of 24.5%. 1.87% — Delhi's lost phone recovery rate lowest of all states/UTs Data collated from states and UTs on the Sanchar Saathi website shows that 822,694 phones were blocked in the Capital. Of these, 527,426 were traced using the portal, but only 9,871 were actually recovered. While the department of telecommunications (DoT) traces blocked devices through Sanchar Saathi, the responsibility for recovery lies with the police in each state or UT. After Delhi, Punjab (10.98%), Bihar (12.45%), Chandigarh (12.49%) and Nagaland (12.81%) reported the lowest recovery rates — still several times higher than that in Delhi. In contrast, Lakshadweep reported a 100% recovery rate, though the scale was miniscule: 13 phones were blocked, five traced, and all five recovered. Andaman & Nicobar and Ladakh followed with recovery rates of 56.09% and 51.46%, respectively. In absolute numbers, Telangana was at the top, recovering 91,306 devices — 42.8% of the 2,12,622 traced. A senior communications ministry official attributed Delhi's poor showing to 'a lax approach' by the police. 'The excuse that mobiles can't be traced doesn't hold. Sanchar Saathi can, as the data shows, trace phones. Police in other states are acting on this, but Delhi's less than 2% recovery rate is a bad look,' the official said. A DoT post on X dated July 18, 2025, noted that over 500,000 mobile phones had been recovered nationally. In the three weeks since, more than 39,000 devices were recovered — roughly one every minute. 'Only five to six states are doing good work; the rest need to catch up,' the official said. To be sure, Delhi also tops the list for blocked and traced phones, accounting for 22% of all such devices nationwide. For residents, the low recovery rate has meant little hope of getting stolen devices back. Vani (name changed), 36, lost her iPhone 16 Pro Max at Rajiv Chowk metro station. 'I immediately reported it to the police, but it's been months. They say it's impossible to find. I've already bought a new phone. It's a helpless situation,' she said. The Delhi Police did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.

Two 9-yr-old girls gang-raped at pool construction site in Narela
New Delhi: Two nine-year-old girls were allegedly gang-raped late last week by two men, a contractor and a caretaker, near an under-construction swimming pool on a private property in outer Delhi's Narela. Both men have been arrested. Police said the girls, who are neighbours, were lured to an area near the pool on some pretexts. Anil Kumar (37) and Munil Kumar (24), residents of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, respectively, were also said to have threatened the girls after the alleged assault. On Aug 8, the mother of one of the survivors filed a complaint, alleging that her daughter and another girl were sexually assaulted at a swimming pool in Narela. A case was registered under sections 70(2) (gang rape), 127 (wrongful confinement) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections 6 and 10 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act at Narela police station. Police arrested Anil and Munil after following the due procedure. Police didn't find their involvement in any previous criminal cases. An officer said a group of girls had found the gate to the pool area open and entered the premises to go for a swim. The two men noticed them and cunningly lured the two girls away from the pool and assaulted them, he added. According to police, it was confirmed that though the pool was not operational or ready for use, people frequently came to swim or bathe there without any charge or formal permission. "The pool is located on a private property. One of the accused, Anil, is a contractor responsible for the property's maintenance while Munil serves as the caretaker. Both girls come from economically weak backgrounds," police said. According to Delhi Police data, 932 cases of rape and Pocso offences were registered till June this year compared to 1,040 such cases during the same period last year. In 2024, a 17-year-old girl and her 22-year-old aunt were allegedly gang-raped by five men in southeast Delhi's Lajpat Nagar. All the accused were arrested. DGP reviews law & order situation in Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur Ranges, ask officials to be ready against counter terrorism
BATHINDA: Continuing with his visits in the field for the second day, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday chaired law and order review meetings and outreach sessions with officers of Ferozepur, Faridkot, Bathinda and Patiala Ranges ahead of forthcoming Independence Day-2025. Reaffirming commitment to eliminating the cross-border drug menace through transparent enforcement of the NDPS Act, DGP issued strategic directives on counter-terror readiness, inter-district coordination, strong nakas, and continuous surveillance to ensure safe Independence Day celebrations . DGP Gaurav Yadav appreciated the officers on work being done under the anti-drug Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign and directed them to further intensify the anti-drug campaign to wipe out the drugs from the state. He also asked officers to conduct financial investigations vis section 68-F of the NDPS Act, and against Hawala operators to dismantle the entire ecosystem of drug trafficking.
