Bengaluru Yellow Line Metro gets approval from the Railway Board for its rolling stock, CMRS inspection likely by end of May
Bengaluru's long-awaited Yellow Line Metro is inching closer to operational status, with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) securing approval from the Railway Board for its rolling stock. This marks a key milestone for the 19.15-km corridor stretching between R.V. Road and Bommasandra. Officials stated that a third train set is expected to be ready for service within a week. Though the physical infrastructure of the Yellow Line has been completed for several months, its commissioning has faced repeated delays, primarily due to the late delivery of the driverless train sets. Officials said that commercial operations are likely to commence in June, initially with limited service. BMRCL officials revealed that they are awaiting the announcement of the inspection schedule by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), Southern Range. 'Most of the required documentation has already been submitted. The signalling certification will be sent shortly,' said an official, expressing hope that the statutory inspection will take place by the end of May. The CMRS inspection is a mandatory procedure before operations can begin. 'The review will include checks on tracks, stations, fire safety systems, entry and exit points, and the train sets themselves. Post-inspection, BMRCL will need approximately two weeks to implement any suggested modifications. Based on this timeline, the Yellow Line could begin partial services by mid or end of June,' official added. Multiple delays, hurdles This corridor holds significant importance, as it will connect southern parts of the city — including the major IT hub at Electronics City — to the rest of the metro network. However, the project has faced several hurdles along the way. In 2019, Chinese company CRRC was awarded a ₹1,578-crore contract to supply 216 coaches. A key requirement was to establish a manufacturing facility in India, which the company failed to do. This caused major disruptions in the project's progress. BMRCL responded by issuing multiple notices and considered invoking a ₹372-crore bank guarantee. To resolve the issue, CRRC entered into a partnership with Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems. Although this collaboration helped restart deliveries, delays have continued. Trial runs on the Yellow Line began on March 7, 2024, using two train sets currently available. BMRCL is now preparing for the final steps before opening the corridor to the public.

Crime Branch arrests a family of six Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Delhi
New Delhi [India] May 12 (ANI): The Southern Range of the Delhi Police Crime Branch has apprehended a family of six Bangladeshi nationals, including four minors, residing illegally in the Jhuggi area of Bawana, North Delhi. The family of illegal immigrants had been living in India without valid documentation for over five years. The apprehended individuals have been identified as Sahidul Hossain (45), his wife Parul Begum (35), and their four minor children. According to Aditya Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the Crime Branch, the family originally hails from Kamlarkuti village in Kurigram district, Bangladesh. They entered India illegally through West Bengal and had previously lived in Kharkhoda, Haryana, where they worked at a brick kiln before relocating to Delhi. The operation was carried out following intelligence inputs developed by the Constable of the Crime Branch. Based on surveillance and confirmed location details, the team raided a settlement in Bawana and successfully apprehended the family. During questioning, the adults initially denied their Bangladeshi nationality and failed to provide any valid Indian identity proof. However, sustained interrogation led to the recovery of Bangladeshi identity documents from their possession and a full confession. Sahidul Hossain admitted that he had been living in India illegally since 2019. He revealed that he was lured by a fellow Bangladeshi named Kavinath, who promised better employment opportunities in India. The family's journey to India involved crossing the Indo-Bangladesh border illegally through unfenced fields near Balahat. From there, they travelled by auto-rickshaw to Dinhata Railway Station, boarded the Brahmaputra Mail, and eventually arrived in Delhi. Upon settling in the National Capital Region, Sahidul took up contract-based work at various brick kilns, earning approximately Rs5,000 per week. The police have initiated legal proceedings, and deportation measures are coordinated with the relevant authorities. (ANI)

Mysuru court acquits man falsely implicated in wife's ‘murder' in
Mysuru: The V additional district and sessions court Wednesday ordered an honourable acquittal of 40-year-old Kurubara Suresha , wrongly implicated by the police for 'murdering' his wife and was put behind bars for nearly two years. Announcing the verdict, Justice Gururaj Somakkalava also ordered the station house officer at Bettadapura police station to remove Suresha's name from all police records. Additionally, the state govt was ordered to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to Suresha. The verdict comes three weeks after Suresha's wife Mallige was traced in Madikeri, along with her male companion with whom she was in a live-in relationship ever since her disappearance from her Kushalnagar home in Nov 2020. Wednesday's court order came within a week after a report was filed by superintendent of police N Vishnuvardhana. Suresha was initially charged with the murder, destruction of evidence, and cruelty. Reprimanding the police officers concerned for misleading the court and committing fraud by filing a fabricated chargesheet, the judge directed the IGP (Southern Range) to initiate a departmental inquiry against IPS officer Jithendra Kumar, inspector B G Prakasha, and PSIs Mahesh Kumar B K and Prakash M Yettinimani. Additionally, the judge directed the chief administrative officer of Mysuru Law Courts to file an FIR against Prakasha under the provisions of BNS (Sec 231), accusing him of fabricating evidence with the intention to falsely convict Suresha. While describing the judgment as significant, Suresha's advocate B S Pandu Poojari said he would appeal for more compensation and to hold all police officers involved in the case accountable, rather than filing an FIR against just one. "The case should serve as an eye-opener for all, as the police officers' blatant [mistake] was exposed," Pandu Poojari stated. The court also ordered the district police to investigate the case of the unidentified body that was assumed to be of Mallige's. Family breathes sigh of relief As soon as the verdict was pronounced, Suresha's joy was palpable. His teenage daughter Keerthi was also delighted by her father's acquittal. Keerthi, who is waiting for her SSLC results, told TOI she knew her father hadn't killed her mother, who is now living with another man. She said her father had suffered a lot due to the mistake committed by some police officers. Suresha's father, Gandhi, and mother also heaved a sigh of relief as they had suffered a lot of humiliation in view of the wrong conviction.
