Fashion Network15-07-2025
OTB Group, which controls Marni, has appointed Meryll Rogge to be the new Creative Director of the Milan-based house.
Rogge joins Marni following the success of her eponymous brand, Meryll Rogge, which she launched in 2020.
The appointment comes two weeks after Rogge was awarded the Grand Prix in Paris at the 2025 ANDAM Fashion Awards, one of fashion's most prestigious accolades.
'We met many highly qualified candidates, confirming how Marni continues to inspire and attract creatives from around the world. Meryll impressed us with the sensitivity she brought to reinterpreting the brand's DNA, offering a contemporary vision that embraces Marni globally and across all its dimensions – including accessories, interior design, communication, and special projects. I wish her the best in carrying this vision forward with passion, supported by a team and a Group that have always placed creativity at the core of their identity,' said Renzo Rosso, Chairman of OTB, the parent company of Marni, in a release.
Rogge succeeds Francesco Risso, who was let go by Marni in June of this year, after a critically acclaimed but commercially challenging decade at the house.
'I'm truly honored to join Marni — a house I've long admired for its independent spirit. To take on a role defined by such visionary creative directors is both humbling and inspiring. I'm deeply grateful to Renzo and Stefano for recognizing the resonance between our worlds and for entrusting me with this extraordinary opportunity. I look forward to helping shape what comes next for Marni,' commented Rogge.
Added Stefano Rosso, CEO of Marni: 'It is a great pleasure to welcome Meryll in Marni. She is an exceptional creative talent and an inspiring woman, whose vision and expertise will play a key role in shaping the future of this amazing brand.'
Born in Ghent, Belgium, Rogge studied Fashion Design at the Royal Academy of Antwerp. She then moved to New York, joining Marc Jacobs ' design team. Nearly seven years later, she returned to Antwerp to become Head of Women's Design at Dries Van Noten where she stayed for four years, developing and conceptualizing also the beauty line until 2025.
In 2021, Rogge won the Emerging Talent of The Year award at the Belgian Fashion Awards, which in 2024 named her Designer of the Year, the first woman to receive this award.

UniCredit boosts outlook after walking away from Banco BPM

Late Tuesday, UniCredit said it was dropping its bid for Italy's third-largest bank Banco BPM, blaming restrictions on the deal imposed by the Italian government while calling it a "missed opportunity" for shareholders. Resolution of the impasse did not have "a clear deadline on it," Chief Executive Andrea Orcel told analysts during a conference call following results. "That for us had become a drag. That is the main reason we withdrew," he said. The country's second-largest bank posted second-quarter net profit of 3.3 billion euros ($3.9 billion) versus 2.7 billion euros a year earlier, a nearly 25 percent rise. Excluding one-off items, UniCredit said its net profit stood at 2.9 billion euros, up eight percent, above analysts' average estimates of 2.5 billion euros. Revenues fell, however, by 3.3 percent to 6.1 billion from 6.3 billion euros in the quarter, hit by hedging costs associated with its 9.9 percent stake in Commerzbank, where UniCredit is now the largest shareholder. By mid-morning UniCredit shares rose as high as 60.77 euros, up 4.6 percent, on the Milan stock exchange, while those of Banco BPM fell as much as 4.6 percent to 9.82 euros. Tug-of-war Looking ahead, UniCredit said it was boosting its net income outlook for 2025 to 10.5 billion euros, above its earlier expectation of 9.3 billion euros. It also expects 2025 net revenue above 23.5 billion euros. The results demonstrated how "a transitional year" turned into the bank's "best year ever", UniCredit said in a statement. UniCredit said one-off items impacted its second quarter, including the equity consolidation of its Commerzbank stake and acquisition of life insurance joint ventures. For 2026 and beyond, revenue and profit would be boosted through "the internalisation of life insurance and the equity consolidation of Alpha Bank and Commerzbank," it said. UniCredit also said it would soon begin a 3.6-billion-euro share buyback programme. The surprise announcement of UniCredit's withdrawal brought to an end a protracted tug-of-war since November, pitting UniCredit against Banco BPM and the Italian government, which opposed the potential deal originally valued at 10.1 billion euros ($11.9 billion). While Banco BPM considered the move hostile and the offer insufficient, Italy's government under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni similarly opposed it, as it would have thwarted its plans to create a third large banking group in Italy, comprising Banco BPM and Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS). The point of contention for UniCredit was the government's so-called "golden power" provision, which it exercised in April and which cited national security concerns due to UniCredit's operations in Russia. The provision allows the government to set certain restrictive conditions on takeovers in strategic sectors, such as banking. Those included an obligation for UniCredit to maintain the level of loans granted in Italy for a certain period of time, and to cease all activity in Russia. 'No clarity' UniCredit said Wednesday it was further reducing its exposure in Russia and was already well ahead of its targets and those of the European Central Bank. Earlier in July, the European Commission warned Italy that the provision was in potential violation of EU law. On Tuesday, Italy's financial market regulator, Consob, suspended the bid for 30 days, citing a "situation of uncertainty" around the offer, potentially giving the parties more time to revolve the problems. But even with an extended deadline, the uncertainty remained, Orcel said. "Even with the Consob extension the situation is such that we will not get clarification of golden power within that timeline," he told analysts. Speaking more broadly, he said EU countries needed more clarity on what was allowable with such transactions. "We hope the debate between the EU and all the national governments leads to a resolution on banking union because Europe needs it," Orcel said.

UniCredit delivers record earnings, raises 2025 outlook

UniCredit S.p.A. has kicked off the European banking earnings season with a stellar performance, surpassing analyst expectations and raising its full-year guidance, buoyed by robust core revenues and pristine asset quality. The Milan-based lender posted a record net profit of €3.3 billion in the second quarter of 2025, lifting its first-half earnings to €6.1 billion. Earnings per share surged to €2.16, up 34% year-on-year and well ahead of the €1.55 forecast. Core revenue rose 1.3% annually to €5.9 billion in the quarter. According to the bank, these results are transforming what was meant to be a "transitional year into the best year ever." 'UniCredit has achieved outstanding financial results, with a record-breaking Q2 contributing to the best H1 in the bank's history,' said Chief Executive Officer Andrea Orcel. 'We are protected for the future as our low cost of risk, strong asset quality and unmatched overlays safeguard against potential macroeconomic downturns,' he added. Upgraded outlook and investor payouts In a further sign of confidence, UniCredit raised its full-year 2025 net profit guidance to approximately €10.5 billion, up from a prior target of more than €9.3 billion. The bank also lifted its net revenue outlook to above €23.5 billion and upgraded its return on tangible equity (ROTE) forecast to around 20%, from previously over 17%. Longer-term projections were also improved, with 2027 earnings now expected to reach at least €11 billion, up from circa €10 billion. The bank raised its distribution guidance to equal to or above €9.5 billion for 2025, including a cash dividend of at least €4.75 billion. An interim cash dividend of about €2.1 billion is envisaged, representing a 46% increase year-on-year, with the ex-dividend date set for 24 November. In addition, a €3.6 billion share buy-back programme is slated to commence following the second-quarter results. Goldman Sachs analyst Chris Hallam praised UniCredit's 'beat and raise' performance, highlighting the bank's continued earnings momentum and shareholder-friendly capital distribution. Balance sheet resilience and strategic clarity UniCredit's gross non-performing exposure (NPE) ratio remained stable at 2.6%, while the cost of risk stayed at a low nine basis points in the first half—underscoring the group's asset quality and prudent provisioning. Separately, UniCredit withdrew its offer for Banco BPM, citing unresolved conditions linked to Italy's golden power regulations. Orcel noted that the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the authorisation process did not benefit shareholders or the bank, prompting the decision to pull the deal. While progress had been made with the Italian Administrative Tribunal (TAR), the European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition and the Italian government, the bank concluded that the timeline for resolving the regulatory hurdle exceeded the offer window. Market reaction and sector momentum Investors responded positively to the results and upgraded guidance. UniCredit shares rallied 2.6% in early Wednesday trading to €59.60, bringing year-to-date gains to 54%. The stock surged 56% in 2024 and 85% in 2023, making it one of Europe's best-performing financials. The Euro STOXX Banks index advanced 1.4%, outperforming the broader Euro STOXX 600, which rose 0.9%. Peers including Deutsche Bank, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya and Nordea Bank each gained 1.5%, while BNP Paribas rose 1.1% ahead of its second-quarter earnings release on Thursday.

The Perfume Shop has another strong year despite price-sensitive consumers

The Perfume Shop's accounts for 2024 are in and they show the UK-based fragrance retailer's revenue rising 5.9%. The company, which also sells in Ireland, operated from one extra store overall last year taking its total to 510, but its revenue rise from 302.4 million to £320.4 million wasn't purely down to trading from new space. The retailer's comparable sales increased by 6.1% with the business saying it saw strong growth both in its physical spaces and online. This was helped by its loyalty programme that continues to grow and saw an increase in member gross sales participation and the total number of members. Meanwhile, operating profits increased to £24.8 million from £21.4 million with profit after tax at £17.2 million, up from £15.4 million in 2023. That was all despite what The Perfume Shop said was another tough year for the retail sector, including the legacy of higher prices even though the monthly rate of inflation eased considerably. Consumer disposable income was squeezed and it said customers were much more price-sensitive even though the beauty market as a whole was strong. It continued to grow its market share through its strategy as a multi-channel retailer and investment here paid off last year. That investment remains key as the business spends money of opening new stores and refurbishing existing locations. In 2024, it refitted 31 stores and opened three in new locations, as well as relocating five to stronger trading positions and closing two as their leases ended and the decision was taken that they didn't fit in with the strategic direction of the firm. Although the accounts didn't contain any details about specific selling seasons or about 2025, we assume that the current year has continued to be strong. During this year it has reported buoyant sales for key events such as Valentine 's Day, Mother's Day and Father's Day. And store openings/revamps have continued at pace.
