Sept 10 set for decision on Rosmah's appeal over recusal of trial judge in solar case
PUTRAJAYA (July 4): The Court of Appeal has fixed Sept 10 to deliver its decision on Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor's appeal to recuse a High Court judge who presided over her corruption trial involving the RM1.25 billion solar hybrid project in Sarawak.
Court of Appeal deputy registrar Muhammad Noor Firdaus Rosli set the date during the case management today.
On June 25, the Court of Appeal three-member bench comprising Justices Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Datuk Azman Abdullah and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin reserved their judgment after hearing submissions from both the prosecution and defence.
Rosmah's lawyer, Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader, confirmed the date when contacted by Bernama .
The wife of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is appealing against the decision by the then High Court judge, Mohamed Zaini Mazlan — who has since been elevated to the Court of Appeal — dismissing her application for his recusal from presiding over her case.
Rosmah filed the recusal application at the eleventh hour before Judge Mohamed Zaini was slated to deliver his decision on Sept 1, 2022. The application was based on allegations that a draft judgment in her case, purportedly prepared by a third party, had been leaked before its official delivery.
On the same day, Judge Mohamed Zaini found Rosmah, 73, guilty of three corruption charges linked to the hybrid solar project, and sentenced her to 10 years in prison and a RM970 million fine, in default 30 years in prison.
However, she was granted a stay of execution on both the custodial sentence and the fine, pending the disposal of her appeal before the Court of Appeal.
Rosmah was charged with one count of soliciting RM187.5 million and two counts of receiving RM6.5 million in bribes from former Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd managing director, Saidi Abang Samsudin. – Bernama Court of Appeal decision Mohamed Zaini Mazlan recusal Rosmah Mansor

Toddler dies of suspected abuse in Sungai Buloh
KUALA LUMPUR: A two-year-old girl has died with bruises, swelling, and cuts on her body, believed to be the victim of abuse, in Paya Jaras, Sungai Buloh on Thursday. Sungai Buloh police chief Supt Mohd Hafis Muhammad Nor said police received a report on the child's death from a medical officer at Sungai Buloh Hospital at 12.45am. He said the toddler was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state by a couple, aged 27 and 28, who were also her adoptive parents. "The attending doctor reported receiving an unconscious child brought in by the couple. "Checks revealed bruises, swelling, and injuries all over the body, along with dried blood stains around the mouth and nose," he said in a statement last night. Mohd Hafis said that following the report, a team from the Sungai Buloh district police headquarters Criminal Investigation Division arrested the couple to assist in the investigation. "Initial checks found that both suspects had no prior criminal records. "A remand application will be submitted at the Shah Alam court tomorrow (today) to facilitate further investigation," he said. He said the child's body has been sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital Forensic Department for a post-mortem and the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. Anwar: Proposed carbon tax not hindrance for investors

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he knew that the trend towards decarbonisation is strong and compelling. "But I think we have to be very realistic. The proposed carbon tax should not be seen as too problematic at the expense of investing companies,' he said during a question and answer session at the Roundtable Meeting with Captains of Industry in Paris, the capital of France on Friday. Also present were Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Anwar, who is here on a two-day official visit, said the implementation has to be done cautiously and gradually. "We are finalising that in the next few months actually,' he said, adding that they are looking at sectors that are the biggest carbon emitters first. Despite the palm oil industry being an important sector for Malaysia, Anwar said any new plantations on peat soil have been stopped due to its high carbon emissions.
