Cinemagoers tutted – but in Materialists, I finally saw a true reflection of today's dating market

On Sunday I took myself, with a slight hangover, to see a preview screening of Materialists, the long-awaited new film by Celine Song. Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, a matchmaker with a talent for pairing her exacting clients with someone who ticks most of their boxes and is also likely to accept them. She is less cupid, more market analyst – capable of seeing through her singletons' self-serving bluster and spin to appraise their actual worth – then matching it with someone of equivalent value.
A thirtysomething woman of only average good looks, for instance, can't hope to land a 'unicorn' – a 6ft-tall high earner with his original hairline. Unicorns want to date twentysomethings – and they can get them, too.
Lucy herself is jaded as a result of her job, and pragmatic, having grown up poor. Her last serious relationship – with John (Chris Evans), an aspiring theatre actor/cater waiter – ended after he admitted, just before their anniversary dinner, that he didn't have $25 to pay for parking.
Now Lucy is resolved to stay single or marry rich – preferably eye-poppingly rich. When she is wooed by Harry (Pedro Pascal) – one of those unicorns her clients seek – and returns home with him to his multimillion-dollar apartment, her head swivels round mid-embrace, totting up its approximate worth.
Obviously one matinee screening in Norwich doesn't count for much in terms of market research, but I got the impression – from the audible and repeated tuts, tsks and groans around me – that the (mostly older) audience was dismayed by these explicit conflations of romance with finance.
I kept quiet in my seat, uncomfortably conscious that I was finally watching a romcom that showed a version of dating and romance I recognised.
That it's Tough Out There for single people is a truth pretty much universally acknowledged, and widely blamed on dating apps. The technology – mainstream now for more than a decade – has become inextricable from the experience of dating; even if you don't use dating apps yourself, you can feel their influence in the normalisation of ghosting, for instance, or 'situationships' of convenience.
Materialists, written and directed by Song, was inspired by her own brief experience working as a matchmaker in New York. But Lucy's clients, with their checklists, seem to be an embodiment of the apps' consumerist logic. Your profile is essentially a billboard on which you display your most marketable self and specify the traits you seek (and won't accept) in others. Swiping is an instant, binary value judgment, appraising someone as being worthy (or not) of your attention. Your choices seem infinite. Meanwhile, access to the most in-demand – and therefore the most desirable, per the algorithm – matches is increasingly reserved for paying members.
It is at best a crude way of creating connection, and at worst explicitly capitalistic in a way that is at odds with attraction, commitment and intimacy. Now, as described by the sociologist Eva Illouz (notably in The End of Love), that hyper-rational, self-serving approach has escaped online dating to infiltrate all of modern love.
Years of swiping have primed people to expect to feel the same instant feedback that someone is right for them, before they commit to finding out. A relationship, meanwhile – a costly endeavour in a culture that prizes individualism, freedom and choice – must offer a return on investment.
You might not express this as baldly as Lucy or her clients, but it is in the air, the unspoken calculation behind many of our romantic decisions (and even our platonic ones: consider the brittle discussion of 'friendship breakups' and 'toxic friends'). Illouz terms it 'emotional capitalism', whereby 'emotional life – especially that of the middle classes – follows the logic of economic relations and exchange'.
What has really given teeth to this clinical number-crunching is wealth inequality, foregrounding the financial support of a partner – and incentivising some to find the richest one possible. The comparisons with the marriage market of Jane Austen's time aren't just qualitative, but backed by data. Stagnating salaries and rising costs mean that if you don't come from wealth yourself, the only way to improve your material circumstances – or just achieve financial security – is through a relationship.
A recent survey by the financial services provider OneFamily found that one in five young adults aged between 18 and 40 are choosing to live with a partner primarily to make living costs more affordable, 'because the bills are too high to contemplate managing on their own', as the OneFamily CEO put it. Even if you are in a happy, reciprocal relationship, you can't block out this influence altogether: do you love your partner, or do you love paying 50% less rent?
Though I am largely contentedly single, I'm uncomfortably conscious that as a self-employed person in a struggling industry, my best shot at improving my circumstances, or even changing my life, is finding a partner. This doesn't influence my decisions in dating – but I can't say that I don't fleetingly think, when I meet a nice doctor who owns a three-bedroom house in south London, that it would be especially nice if it worked out. (It didn't!)
It is naive to believe that we can separate romance and even relationships from financial reality. Against such a brutal backdrop, financial stability is arguably a sound reason to prioritise the search for love. If that strikes us as unsavoury or regressive, we should push for affordable housing and more financial and society safety nets, so that we can enter into relationships freely and set love apart, as best we can, from finances.
For now, the challenge faced by modern singles – as Materialists acknowledges – is striking a balance between pragmatism and idealism, and holding on to hope against, often brutal reality checks. 'Some people just want more' is the film's tagline. I can't begrudge anyone for dating for money more than for love, when the two are so entangled. But we might ultimately be better off pushing for more from society, rather than our partners.

'Marriage is a business deal and it always has been.' So says Dakota Johnson's Lucy, an elite Manhattan matchmaker in Celine Song's second feature, Materialists. Lucy may be a modern woman, but her world looks eerily similar to the marriage mart of Jane Austen's day. For Lucy and her clients, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. Or rather, a 'high quality woman', as Lucy would unironically put it. Materialists drops us head first into a world where coupling off with a partner is a purely financial endeavour; where foolish notions of love are not merely ignored, but deemed to be irrelevant; where women must choose passion or practicality. If all of this sounds rather archaic or even regressive, that's because it is. And Song knows it. After all, she frequently cites Jane Austen, specifically Pride and Prejudice, as one of her biggest inspirations for the film: 'What an amazing fantasy Pride and Prejudice is, because in that story, the love of your life is also the answer to all your practical problems,' she said to Curzon. Just as this year's best picture winner Anora was widely viewed as the anti-Pretty Woman for flipping the fantasy of the rich-guy-falls-for-sex-worker-and-whisks-her-out-of-poverty on its head, Materialists functions as a sort of anti-Pride and Prejudice. As Song notes, Austen's beloved novel offers a similar fantasy: that the man you love might also be the answer to your practical financial problems. In Materialists, as in Anora, the fantasy doesn't quite play out. Not that Lucy is naive enough to expect it to. No, this heroine is all practicality and sense. 'I will die alone or marry a rich man,' she says with resignation at the beginning of the film. This businesslike approach to love doesn't just come from her day job: she has been burned by passionate love in the past: her ex-boyfriend John is a 37-year-old waiter who, despite having the face of Chris Evans, can't seem to make it as an actor. She gets her chance at the dream marriage of convenience when she meets Harry, an uber rich guy who seems nice enough and has a $12m apartment. He is, her colleague says enviously, a 'unicorn'. This is another unexpected echo of Anora – when Ani, a sex worker looking for a way out of poverty, meets and marries a wealthy young Russian, Vanya, her colleague, also envious, snarks, 'Oh, you caught your whale'. Each of these reverse fantasies are driven by heroines who are adamantly uninterested in romance. It marks new territory. Even in Austen's day, heroines clung to the fantasy of a love match despite the practical realities of their time. And we progressed from there. The early screwball romcoms of the 1930s and 40s brought us headstrong heroines, while the 80s and 90s screen romances were filled with 'working girls' who were independent, self-sufficient women. Now, it seems, we are entering a new era defined by heroines who openly, proudly proclaim their desire for a practical match – an era of young women who have given up on love. Fascinatingly, this is playing out in the real world, too. For a generation of young heterosexual women, a 'unicorn' or a 'whale' is seen as the ultimate prize. 'Watching Materialists when the poor man propaganda wins and Lucy picks a broke 37-year-old failed actor over rich, loving Harry who would give her the world,' one person wrote in a TikTok video in response to Materialists that scored more than 22,000 likes. 'I will not fall for broke guy propaganda, she fumbled hard,' another wrote – also liked more than 22,000 times. I can't help but recall last year's 'looking for a man in finance' TikTok trend. Young women are also reappraising certain female characters who were once judged for their practical approach to love. Meredith Blake, the gold-digging villain of the 1998 The Parent Trap who threatens to stand in the way of true love, now has a new troop of young fans who think she was an 'icon', actually. 'Maturing is realising that Meredith just knew [sic] what she deserves and wouldn't settle for less' – TikTok again. Then there's the growing idolisation of the money-oriented Amy March, kickstarted by Greta Gerwig's 2019 adaptation of Little Women. Gerwig put the character's motivation into words: 'Don't sit there and tell me that marriage isn't an economic proposition because it is. It may not be for you, but it most certainly is for me.' But wait. Little Women and Pride and Prejudice were written years ago when women often really did need to marry well to escape their circumstances. Why is this resonating with young women now? Haven't we moved on? Wasn't decades of feminism meant to dig us out of this reliance on men and marriage? Why are Lucy and Ani and, it would seem, tens of thousands of young women on TikTok, thinking and operating as if they were characters in a Victorian novel? What, in other words, is going on? Song has some ideas. 'I think it has so much to do with how deeply broken our economic systems are, especially in the US,' she said in a recent Guardian interview. 'As we have learned, the American dream is not achievable. You cannot jump your class. But what's one of the few ways that you can still jump your class? Well, marriage.' It's all rather cold and depressing. Thankfully, though, while these films may be reflecting a real, somewhat unsettling cultural shift, they defy the philosophy that romance is merely a business deal. They stand up for love. Lucy finds her 'unicorn' and Ani gets her 'whale' – but each 'love' story ends in disappointment. Lucy has to face up to the fact that she does need a little love in her life, actually – even if it means forgoing the nice restaurants. Meanwhile, Ani is confronted with the reality that Vanya doesn't love her or even respect her enough to stand up for their marriage once his oligarch parents arrive to break them up. In each film, the third act delivers relief in the form of real human connection. Love does matter – even, and perhaps especially, in our increasingly money-obsessed world. And cinema is still fighting for it.

Leo Dee, was left devastated by the murder of his wife Lucy and their two daughters, Maia and Rina, who were shot dead in Israel on April 7 2023 - exactly six months before the horrific Hamas attacks which left 1,200 people dead and 250 taken hostage. ‌ Lucy's lungs, liver, kidney and heart were donated to save the lives of four other people. Her kidney saved the life of 39-year-old Palestinian carpenter Abu Radia. Now two and a half years later Rabbi Dee will wed Aliza later this month in front of friends and family. ‌ And he insisted his first wife would have fully approved of his new bride. He said: 'I feel that life has to go on. When terrible things happen it's possible to put them in the past and to live your life into the future. 'I feel like I don't have to be defined by my tragedy. I look at the positive in life and try to overcome the negative and try to make a disaster into something meaningful." He went on: 'Life rarely gives us answers wrapped in ribbon. It gives us moments. Quiet, painful, surprising moments. Lucy was perfect for me for our idyllic 25 years together – the ideal partner for a young man finding his way as a rabbinical student, exemplary as a mother of five, and the spiritual architect of our home. But tragedy rewrites a person. And the man I am today is not the man that I was. ‌ 'Aliza is perfect for the man I've become. She brings out the best in me – and she's the most optimistic person I know. Lucy taught me how to love, how to listen, how to give without overpowering. 'Maia taught me how to parent, how to believe in someone's potential. Rina taught me how to be a human – how to care for the planet, and even more, for people who don't think like you do. "And tragedy? Tragedy taught me how to see what matters. It stripped away the noise. It left behind only the meaningful: friends, family, purpose.' ‌ School teacher Lucy, 48, and her daughters Maia, 20, and Rina, 15, were shot dead while on holiday. The two men who carried out the attack were later killed by Israeli forces. The rabbi, from Radlett, Herts, who has two surviving daughters and a son - Keren, Tali and Yehuda - moved from London with his family to Efrat, near Bethlehem. He said he first decided to find a new partner last year. He said: 'I came back to an empty house a year ago. On the Shabbat just over a year ago, as I ate a meal myself, all my remaining three children were away over the Sabbath. I just burst into tears and I cried for half an hour. And at some point, I thought to myself. Why are you crying? ‌ 'When you feel pain, it comes as a blessing. I suddenly realised: I need to get remarried. I suddenly felt calm. The tears stopped.' He added: 'So how does someone get from heartbreak to happiness? I still don't know. I do know this: sometimes the first step isn't understanding. It's crying alone,, and listening for the still quiet voice that follows. "I'm going from grief to joy. I know Aliza is just perfect for me. I am not the same person I was when my family were murdered. I was determined from then on to look forward not back. This is the pinnacle. 'I am not one person anymore. I am a mosaic – pieces gathered from a 25-year marriage, from raising five children, from loss, and from healing."

'Let Me Tell You' is a series of columns from our expert editors about NYC living, including the best things to do, where to eat and drink, what to see at the theater—and in today's edition why to stay optimistic about our city's dating scene. At the very top of the list of claims I'm challenging—right up there with 'don't text him first'—is the idea that New York City is one of the worst places to find love. I write this as a single, heterosexual, 34-year-old divorcée. No roster. No situationship. No crush. (Okay, maybe one. Two if I'm delusional.) Basically, no prospects. (At least not at the time of publication.) And while you might already be rolling your eyes, waiting for the inevitable twist where this turns out to be a piece of ironic New Yorker -style satire, I'm not kidding. Take my hand. We're being earnest now. Dating in New York is actually awesome. Not because it's easy. (It's not.) It's messy and chaotic and everyone is perpetually 15 minutes late to a first date and maybe still in love with their ex. This isn't about being a hopeless romantic. It's about being open to the sheer chance of it all. It's the fact that the simple act of ordering a martini, joining the run club or locking eyes on the subway can lead to a conversation, which can lead to a connection, which can turn into a crush, which can become a love story. Yes, it sounds rom-com coded. Yes, I did watch Materialists twice in one weekend. (And I'd do it again.) But this isn't about being a hopeless romantic. It's about being open to the sheer chance of it all. If you're reading this, I sense you're a nonbeliever. Your algorithm is likely filled with think pieces about the so-called 'romantic recession,' about how dating apps are broken, how 'boy sober' is trending, how the romance sections at the city's best bookstores are booming because people would rather live in fictional meet-cutes than risk a real one. And then there are the endless rants on TikTok about first dates gone awry and etiquette being a thing of the past. But here's what all of those opinions are missing: New York is still one of the last places where a meet-cute doesn't feel extinct. Where 'anything could happen' isn't such a crazy thought—it's literally how this city works. And I know this because I've been testing the theory. Following my divorce, I've been actively dating—one or two dates a week, on average—since January. Am I tired? Yes. But I wouldn't trade it. Not the men, not the stories, not even the situationships turned into heartbreaks. Because each date, each encounter, has confirmed what I already suspected: The possibility itself is the point. Take one Friday in May. It was hot, one of those sticky, electric New York evenings where the sidewalks shimmer, the air feels charged and everyone's just a little more flammable. I wandered into a bar alone, ordered a glass of wine and locked eyes with the bartender—let's call him Chance. He moved with the easy confidence of someone who knew he was being watched, and when he winked at me, I felt that rare flicker of hope. We flirted. He made me a drink (or three) on the house. I left my number on my receipt. Two nights later he came over. Then, like so many New York men, he vanished. Until months later, on another whim, I found myself back at the same bar, face-to-face with him again. I didn't go back for the bartender. I went back for the feeling I'd had that first night… the high of being brave enough to walk into a place alone, to flirt with a stranger, to open myself up to whatever might happen. That night I even asked other people at the bar what they loved about dating in New York. Almost everyone, from Gen Zs to thirtysomethings, said the same thing: 'You can meet anybody.' And with that comes the promise of something. Maybe just a fling, maybe something more. Even the bartender, when pressed, admitted that women often assume he's only flirting to hook up, so they shut down on him (rudely, apparently) before he can make a real connection. And it made me pause—aren't we all doing that? Going on the apps and walking into dates and bars armored in cynicism, assuming the worst before the first drink arrives? New York teaches you that rejection and loneliness isn't the opposite of love, it's baked into the pursuit of it. Yes, you risk the proverbial (or literal) bartender not texting you the next day. You risk getting hurt. You even risk disappointing someone else. But that's the deal. There is no reward without risk. And when you're brave enough, kind enough and open enough, the reward isn't always a partner—sometimes it's just the reminder that connection is still possible. Grief is unavoidable, and none of us will get out of dating—or life—without it. But New York teaches you that rejection and loneliness isn't the opposite of love, it's baked into the pursuit of it. So don't stop. Don't settle. Don't buy into the rhetoric that dating here is doomed and you're destined to die alone. I'd rather navigate this city solo, chasing its endless ' what ifs?' and ' why nots?,' than close myself off to connection. Wouldn't you?
