M'sian pays RM2.50 for one curry puff, gets almost no filling
As prices of certain goods are set to increase starting July 1, some vendors are already under fire for reducing portions — and one recent case has struck a nerve with Malaysians online.
A disgruntled customer recently took to Reddit's r/Bolehland community to share his disappointing experience after purchasing what he called an 'oxygen curry puff' — a curry puff that appeared to contain almost no filling.
In the 10-second video clip, the user showcased the inside of the snack, revealing a nearly hollow shell with barely any sign of potato.
He claimed he was charged RM2.50 for the item.
'RM2.50 per curry puff. End up with oxygen,' he wrote in frustration.
'I always laughed at those posts during Ramadan. Never thought I'd end up getting scammed like this too.
I hope to God this fella never sells kuih ever again.'
The post quickly gained traction, with fellow Redditors empathising and criticising the seller for short-changing customers.
'I pray these kinds of sellers have their daily routines ruined by bloating for every oxygen puff they sell,' one commenter said.
'The suffering should prolong for ruining people's mornings. Imagine biting into a hollow shell that reminds you of your wallet — that's real pain.'
Another user pointed out that accountability matters:
'Nothing wrong with calling out these vendors. If they can't sell decent food, they shouldn't be selling at all.'

Apples and oranges exempt from expanded SST in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Apples and oranges will continue to be exempt from the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) as they are widely consumed and cannot be grown locally, according to Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican. He explained that these fruits are dietary staples, especially during festive seasons like Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, making their tax exemption necessary to ease public expenses. 'These fruits cannot be produced locally due to our climate, but they are part of daily consumption for many Malaysians,' Johan said during a Finance Ministry TikTok Live session titled 'SST Naik, Semua Harga Pun Naik?' While imported fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, and avocados will be taxed under the expanded SST, Johan stressed that apples and oranges remain tax-free to avoid burdening consumers. 'We want to encourage the consumption of local fruits, but at the same time, we recognise that apples and oranges are important in people's daily lives,' he added. Local fruits, including 'pisang mas', remain untaxed, ensuring stable prices for consumers. Johan noted that 90 per cent of bananas in Malaysia are locally sourced, with only 10 per cent imported. 'Supporting local produce helps the economy and ensures affordability,' he said, adding that snacks like 'pisang goreng' will not see price hikes unless made with imported bananas. Separately, Johan confirmed that gold bars and jewellery will retain a zero tax rate due to their cultural and economic significance. 'Gold is often used within communities for savings, as collateral for loans, and as blessings during weddings and childbirth. Therefore, we have decided to maintain a zero tax rate due to its importance in the community and its role in the economy,' he said. The government expects an additional RM10 billion in revenue from SST collections, opting to retain it over reintroducing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for its lighter consumer impact.

After Apples And Oranges, MoF Announces Exemption For Beauty Services From Service Tax Expansion
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Finance (MoF) announced today that, after carefully considering public sentiment, it has decided not to proceed with the proposed expansion of the Service Tax to beauty services such as manicures and pedicures, facial services, and barbers and hairdressers. The MoF said all revisions to the expanded Sales Tax and Service Tax were made after taking into account feedback from the public and industry. 'Since the announcement on June 9, 2025 regarding the revision of the Sales Tax and Service Tax (SST), the MADANI Government has closely followed feedback received from the rakyat and engaged with industry on the proposed expansion of the SST." In addition, the Ministry also engaged a number of backbenchers yesterday as part of its efforts to understand feedback from the grassroots, it said in a statement here today. Select imported fruits to be exempt from Sales Tax To recap, after due consideration of feedback received regarding the Sales Tax on imported fruits, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has agreed to exempt imported apples, oranges, mandarin oranges and dates from the Sales Tax. The MoF reiterated that the MADANI Government has not imposed Sales Tax on daily essential goods in order to mitigate pressure on the cost of living for the majority of Malaysians. These tax-exempted essential goods, whether locally produced or imported, include rice, chicken, beef, vegetables and eggs. Local fish varieties, including selar, tongkol, cencaru, and sardines, whether frozen, chilled or fresh, will also continue to be exempt from Sales Tax.
