GB Nagar: Admin asks depts to be on high alert for rains, flooding

The Gautam Budh Nagar administration has asked all departments to remain on high alert, ensuring that adequate measures are in place to deal with any potential flooding, officials said on Wednesday in view of the monsoon showers expected to intensify in coming days in the region. Authorities have also been told to keep a close watch on river water levels and issue timely alerts to residents of vulnerable villages. District magistrate Medha Roopam has directed officials to keep flood control posts active, deploy sufficient staff on duty, and ensure availability of essential equipment. Authorities have also been told to keep a close watch on river water levels and issue timely alerts to residents of vulnerable villages. 'Flood posts must remain functional round the clock and residents of low-lying areas should be regularly updated about the water situation,' the DM said, adding that departments must maintain coordination to avoid delays in response. 'Drains, culverts and vulnerable stretches should be monitored, while pumps and other essential equipment must be kept ready for immediate use', the DM added. The irrigation department has been tasked with monitoring rivers and informing the administration about any rise in water levels. Officials have also been asked to chalk out contingency plans for cattle shelters located in flood-prone zones to rescue the livestock and relocate them swiftly if required. Irrigation department officials said the situation is under control, with no indication of flooding so far. Executive engineer BK Singh said the water discharge of Yamuna at the Okhla barrage was recorded at 79,000 cusecs on Wednesday, down from 91,000 cusecs a day earlier, while the Hindon barrage discharge has remained stable at around 2,000 cusecs. 'The danger level for the Okhla barrage is 200.006 metres, and for the Hindon barrage it is 205.080 metres, both of which are currently well within safe limits. The water discharge at Okhla is expected to gradually decrease in the coming days, while levels at the Hindon barrage are likely to remain steady,' Singh added. The DM has directed the concerned departments to prepare relief strategies in advance, officials said, adding that the preparations include stockpiling rescue equipment, identifying vulnerable areas, and keeping rescue teams on standby for immediate support to residents. To be sure, flood-prone areas in Gautam Budh Nagar include Sector 124, 125, Nagla Vajidpur, Asgarpur, Makanpur Khadar, Makanpur Bangar, Latifpur, Atta Fatehpur, and Navrangpura in Dadri; Sikandarpur, Belakala, Belakhurd, Chak Mangrauli, Basantpur in Sadar; and Govindgarh, Shamshamnagar, Jewar Khadar, Bhagwantpur, Sirsa, Aliyabad among others in Jewar. On Wednesday, the minimum and maximum temperature of Gautam Budh Nagar was recorded as 27 degrees Celsius (°C) and 35°C, respectively. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the district is likely to witness intermittent rain spells over the next one week. From August 21 to 26, the sky will remain partly cloudy with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers expected on most days. The intensity of rainfall may increase towards the end of the week, with August 27 and 28 predicted to have generally cloudy skies accompanied by the possibility of more widespread rain and thunder showers. While no heavy downpour warning has been issued, officials said that even moderate but continuous rainfall could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and affect traffic movement. .

School Holiday: Are schools closed in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune on August 21 amid rains? Check here

After almost three days of school holidays, post the long Independence Day weekend, and with heavy rainfall still predicted for Maharashtra districts such as Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Navi Mumbai on Thursday, the normal routine is likely to remain disrupted for another day. The schools in most districts will remain open on Thursday, August 21. There have been no official announcements for a holiday in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, or Thane yet. However, the Lonavala Municipal Council has announced a holiday for all schools tomorrow following heavy rains. The order applies to all primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools within the council limits, across every management and medium of instruction. Officials said the step was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure student safety, considering the continuous heavy rains in Lonavala and the surrounding areas. Despite an alert for heavy rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the rainfall intensity is expected to ease from Thursday. The weather agency said the rainfall activity is likely to reduce over Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra from today onwards with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over north Konkan, including Mumbai, and isolated very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) over North Madhya Maharashtra on 20th and isolated heavy rainfall over the region during the next 3 days. However, light to moderate rainfall is still predicted for most/many places very likely over the region during the next 7 days. According to the weather department's weekly forecast, Mumbai will receive heavy rainfall until Thursday, 21 August. However, the rainfall is expected to continue throughout the week. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Mumbai is receiving heavy rainfall due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and the strengthening of monsoon winds.

First flood warning in force in Bhadrachalam; Godavari inching close to second flood warning level at the temple town in Telangana

A flood alert has been sounded for people living in the riverside villages in Bhadrachalam Agency as the swollen Godavari river rose to 47 feet, just one feet below the second flood warning level at Telangana's temple town of Bhadrachalam late on Wednesday evening. The first flood warning was issued by Bhadradri Kothagudem collector Jitesh V. Patil at 8.15 a.m. on Wednesday after the river touched 43 feet mark. The water level in the river hovered around 47 feet and the flood discharge in the river crossed 10.98 lakh cusecs at 7 p.m. Several streams were in spate in Dummugudem and Charla mandals in Bhadrachalam division following heavy rainfall over the past few days. Swollen streams flooded causeways and low-lying stretches of various roads in Bhadrachalam Agency snapping road link to a couple of remote villages along the Bhadradri Kothagudem-Mulugu inter-district border. A flood control room has been set up at the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) headquarters in Bhadrachalam to constantly monitor the situation in the riverside villages and flood prone areas in Bhadrachalam Agency. The control room can be reached at 7995268352. Another control room (08743-232444 and 7981219425) has been activated at the sub-collector's office in Bhadrachalam to tackle any potential flood event. According to official sources, flood duty officers have been positioned in Bhadrachalam division as per the flood contingency plan. The water level in the Godavari at Kaleshwaram in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district inched closer to the danger level of 13.460 metres after crossing the warning level of 12.210 metres. The water level is expected to rise further due to heavy inflows from the projects in the upstream. The bathing ghats near Triveni Sangamam, the confluence-point of the Godavari, the Pranahitha and the subterranean Saraswati rivers, were partially submerged by floodwaters in Kaleshwaram, sources added. At the Lakshmi (Medigadda) barrage, both the inflow and outflow were recorded at 9.02 lakh cusecs as all the 85 crest gates of the barrage were kept open in free flow condition on Wednesday. All the upstream projects on the Godavari, including the Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP), Kaddam Narayan Reddy and Sripada Yellampally, continued to receive heavy inflows from the catchment areas of the Godavari and its tributaries in Maharashtra.
