Officials of a small Palestinian militant group that was close to ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad said their leader was arrested Saturday by the country's new Islamist-led authorities.
The arrest of the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) came after the armed wing of another Palestinian militant group, Islamic Jihad, said last month that the new authorities had detained two of its officials on unspecified charges.
The United States, which blacklists both Palestinian the PFLP-GC and Islamic Jihad as "terrorist" organisations, has said it will not ease Assad-era sanctions on Syria until it has verified progress on priorities including acting against "terrorism".
Speaking on condition of anonymity because of sensitivity of the issue, a PFLP official told AFP that "secretary general Talal Naji was arrested" in Damascus.
A second official confirmed the arrest, while a third said: "Naji was asked... to report to one of the security branches and has not returned. Most likely he was arrested."
The first official said the faction had contacted Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas and senior Hamas official Khaled Meshaal "to request their urgent intervention".
Last month, a statement from Islamic Jihad's military wing said that the group's Syria representative Khaled Khaled and organising committee member Yasser al-Zafri had been detained in Syria for days "without explanation".
It expressed hope "that our brothers in the Syrian government" would release the pair, noting their detention came as the group is "fighting the Zionist enemy" in Gaza alongside its ally Hamas.
Syria hosted Palestinian rejectionist factions for decades under the Assad family's rule when it was part of the Iran-backed "axis of resistance" against Israel and the United States.
In late March, US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said Syria's new authorities should "fully renounce and suppress terrorism, exclude foreign terrorist fighters from any official roles (and) prevent Iran and its proxies from exploiting Syrian territory".
The PFLP-GC was founded in 1968 after breaking away from the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
When conflict erupted in Syria in 2011 with the brutal repression of peaceful pro-democracy protests, the PFLP-GC stood firmly by Assad's government.
After rebels, including jihadists, overran parts of the Yarmuk Palestinian refugee camp on the outskirts of Damascus in 2012, the PFLP-GC's armed wing fought alongside Syrian government forces to take it back.
The group has been accused of masterminding the bombing of Swissair Flight SR330 in February 1970, as well as several attacks against Israeli civilians.
Naji was elected secretary general in 2021 after the death of the group's founder Ahmad Jibril.

Donald Trump reacts to 'kidnapping' of Greta Thunberg: 'She should do anger management'

President suggested anger management classes for Swedish climate activist who alleged that she was kidnapped by the Israeli army as she was on her way to give aid to Gaza. Thunberg, 22, and several others were taken into Israeli custody in international waters early Monday while attempting to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, which faces a humanitarian crisis amid Hamas's ongoing war with Israel. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel," Thunberg said in a video which was prerecorded. Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which operated the boat released the pre-recorded video as soon as the ship was out of communication. Israel claimed that the 'selfie yacht' of the celebrities was intercepted by the Israeli Army to provide them with sandwiches and water bottles. Trump had a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Monday and when he was asked if Greta Thunberg came up in their discussion, Trump said Greta is a strange person. "She's a young, angry person. I don't know if it's real anger; it's hard to believe, actually. But I saw what happened. She's certainly different. Anger management. I think she has to go to an angry management class. That's my primary recommendation for her. " "I find it—I think Israel has enough problems without kidnapping Greta Thunberg," Trump said. "Is that what she said? She was kidnapped by Israel?" Greta Thunberg rose to prominence when her video chastizing world leaders at the UN General Assembly Climate summit in 2019 went viral. She was also seen giving a "death stare" at Trump at the summit. 'She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!' Trump wrote at that time, reacting to her angry speech, which was pointed at the president.

We've pushed back 330 illegal foreigners, none of them has returned: Assam CM

Guwahati, June 9 (UNI) Iterating the BJP-led Assam government's stern stand on Bangladeshi citizens entering or living in India illegally, state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed the Assembly that the government has pushed back almost 330 such unauthorised foreigners, and none of them has returned. 'It is not possible for them to return, and we are firm on this. And this pushback will be intensified, it will be expedited. The way illegal immigrants have entered the state from Bangladesh and Pakistan, we have to be more proactive to keep the state safe," said Sarma. The Chief Minister was replying to a demand by opposition members, including Congress' Debabrata Saikia and AIUDF's Ashraful Hussain to discuss on the issue of National Register of Citizens (NRC). While raising the issue, Saikia said that while the government has claimed to have pushed back illegal foreigners, some of them again entered Assam, making the government's stand vague on the issue. The Chief Minister further informed the House that the state government has also decided to reinforce the Illegal (Expulsion from Assam) Act 1950. "Under the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950, the District Commissioner, if he is reasonably convinced that a certain individual is a foreigner, can remove that individual without referring a case to the Tribunal," he said. The Chief Minister said the government has taken inspiration from former Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha, who had pushed back illegal immigrants. 'We are taking inspiration from the good works of the Congress,' he said while referring to Chaliha, who was a Congress Chief Minister. "There are two ways to identify illegal immigrants in Assam — one is the Tribunal and the other is the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950. There the word 'push back'is not there, but 'remove' is there," he added Expressing his concern over the issue, the Chief Minister further said that the government has found out almost 2600 Facebook accounts, which were operated from Islamabad, Riyadh and Saudi Arab. "They don't even welcome Rahul Gandhi, but welcome one particular individual from Assam. And I have documents, within the next ten to 12 days I'll provide some information about such accounts to the press,' he said. 'These accounts post only on two occasion, either on Palestine or on Assam, nothing else. I am not saying that the Muslims of Assam are not indigenous. Indigenous is a secular definition. ... There is a big conspiracy and we must resist it through the process of law,' he added. UNI ANP SSP

Israel to show Greta Thunberg and activists October 7 terror footage after Gaza-bound yacht seized

sraeli naval forces intercepted a Gaza-bound aid boat carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg and 11 other international activists on Monday (June 9), accusing them of attempting to breach Israel's naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. The boat, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was seized before reaching Palestinian waters and diverted to the Israeli port of Ashdod. 'I congratulate the IDF for the quick and safe takeover of the 'Madleen' flotilla,' Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). Katz also ordered that the activists be shown footage of Hamas's October 7 attack, in which militants killed around 1,200 people in Israel and took 251 hostages. 'It is fitting that the antisemitic Greta and her Hamas-supporting friends see exactly who the Hamas terrorist organization is, which they came to support and for whom they are acting, and what atrocities they committed against women, the elderly, and children, and who Israel is fighting against in its defense,' Katz said. Israel has dismissed the activists' voyage as a publicity stunt rather than a humanitarian mission. 'This wasn't humanitarian aid. It's Instagram activism,' said Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer. 'Greta was not bringing aid, she was bringing herself… She's not here for Gaza — let's be blunt about it. She's here for Greta.' According to officials, the seized ship carried supplies amounting to less than a single truckload, far short of what is needed in the war-torn enclave. Greta Thunberg, 21, released a prerecorded message shortly after the boat was halted, urging supporters to pressure Swedish authorities. 'I urge all my friends, family and comrades to put pressure on the Swedish government to release me and the others as soon as possible,' she said. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said all 12 activists were undergoing medical checks and would be deported. They are currently held in a detention facility in Ramle. A photo released by the ministry showed Thunberg disembarking at Ashdod. The Swedish and French governments confirmed they were monitoring the situation. French President Emmanuel Macron called on Israel to allow six detained French citizens to return home quickly. Swedish officials stated that all passengers were aware of the risks and currently faced no danger. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which organized the mission, condemned Israel's interception, claiming the ship was unlawfully boarded in international waters roughly 200 kilometers from Gaza. 'The ship was unlawfully boarded, its unarmed civilian crew abducted, and its life-saving cargo — including baby formula, food and medical supplies — confiscated,' the group said in a statement. Legal rights group Adalah called the seizure a violation of international law, stating: 'The arrest of the unarmed activists… amounts to a serious breach of international law.' The incident comes amid an intensifying humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israeli forces have allowed limited aid into the enclave following US pressure, but experts warn of famine as food, fuel, and medical supplies remain scarce. Israel has maintained a naval blockade of Gaza since Hamas took control in 2007. The country says the measure is necessary to prevent arms smuggling, but critics call it collective punishment for Gaza's 2 million residents. The war in Gaza has led to the deaths of more than 54,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Israeli officials assert their campaign targets Hamas infrastructure and militants.
