RJ Hampshire, Tom Vialle square off in Supercross 250 East
TAMPA, Florida: While not completely unprecedented, having both Monster Energy Supercross 250 regional champions in the same division is a rare occurrence. But that is just one of the scenarios that will be faced by this year's 250 East riders.
RJ Hampshire was scheduled to defend his 250 West title, but a broken wrist suffered during the offseason took too long to heal. A major surgery required the doctors to disassemble and repair a plate and screws, effectively putting him back to square one in his healing process barely nine weeks before the 250 West season began.
As gritty a rider as Hampshire is, it was not enough time.
"If I had to have run A1, it wouldn't have been good for myself," Hampshire said during Press Day for the opening round of the 250 East division at Raymond James Stadium. "I wasn't in a good spot, mentally, physically [but now] I feel good. On the bike, I can pretty much do everything I want to do — except for the fact that I'm going to have some pain in my wrist. It's not going to go away but I'm okay with that. ... We're all dealing with something. You see the (other) guys up here. My injury is public; theirs isn't."
Hampshire and Tom Vialle find themselves in the midst of a stacked 250 East field that was made even more robust by the inclusion of the 250 West champion and the rider who finished second to him last year in that division, Levi Kitchen, who was originally scheduled to ride in the West before an illness during the weekend of the season opener forced his decision to switch coasts.
"Last year was a test for myself to put myself in position and be able to win a championship," Hampshire continued. "That mentality; that switch you can have is huge and you don't know it until that position comes. There are a lot of great guys; every week is going to be a grind."
Austin Forkner, Cameron McAdoo, Pierce Brown, Max Anstie, Nate Thrasher, Seth Hammaker, and Chance Hymas will mount up this week, although McAdoo announced he will make a race day decision as to whether his ACL is healthy enough to execute the full program.
Each of those riders are capable of winning on Saturday but ultimately, the championship may come down to the riders with an already proven ability to win titles.
"Mentally, I feel like Tom and I are the only ones who have been able to put it together," Hampshire said. "I think we can both deliver when the time comes."
While not discounting the other factory riders, Vialle agrees that the depth of the field is something that must be dealt with and is an important step in his development.
"It's going to be interesting and I'm actually pretty excited over the weekend to see how it's going to be — but we race pretty much all year in outdoors and SMX (SuperMotocross League) all together, so it's not a big difference. Once you move to 450s all different guys at the same time. It's nice that a lot of guys can win a race."

After an ACL injury to Damian Lillard and another first-round playoff exit, experts expect Antetokounmpo to request a trade this summer. Teams around the league will line up to offer packages for the nine-time All-NBA selection. However, Podziemski offered his thoughts on the situation. According to him, he much prefers players to stay with their original team for their entire career. Podziemski grew up in Wisconsin and was a big Bucks fan as a kid. He spoke to Kay Adams on Tuesday's episode of Up and Adams about the rumors swirling around the superstar. To him, Antetokounmpo playing in another city just doesn't feel right. 'It's like Steph[en Curry] not playing for the Warriors,' Podziemski said about the Greek Freak changing teams. 'All guys who've cemented their legacy and what they're about in this league on one team, you never expect it to change. Advertisement 'It's the same as Luka [Doncic] in Dallas. The whole world is shocked because of the player that he is, and you could see that they were building around him. It's like any star in the league that stays with one team. You expect them to be in one jersey, and anywhere else just doesn't seem right at all.' Even though he is with the Warriors, Podziemski still has an affinity for his hometown. For him, his goal is to win a championship in Milwaukee for Golden State against the Bucks. 'It'd be pretty cool to win a championship in Milwaukee against them; that would be something cool,' Podziemski said. 'But I love Golden State. I love everything that they've invested in me despite having Hall of Famers all the time around me. It's pretty cool to be wanted as a young player.' Podziemski and Antetokounmpo are at different points in their careers. However, if the young Warriors guard has his way, they will stay where they are and finish their careers with one team. Still, Milwaukee's superstar fits what the Warriors are looking for. Therefore, there is a world in which they are in the same deal.

Russell Wilson Improves Giants' Offense Ranking originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A season ago, the New York Giants entered camp with little optimism surrounding the offense. Quarterback Daniel Jones, recovering from an ACL tear, had run out of goodwill with the fanbase. Receiver Malik Nabers was all the rage as he obliterated opposing corners and made one-handed catches throughout the summer, but tied to Jones, expectations were low. At running back, well, nobody was going to fill Saquon Barkley's shoes. Advertisement Things went about as poorly as pessimistic fans may have anticipated. Jones struggled before eventually being benched (and released). Nabers was among the best receivers in the league but grew visibly frustrated with his offensive environment. And just half a season into a three-year deal, running back Devin Singletary was unseated by rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. In 2025, New York's offense is incredibly similar, with the only change coming at quarterback. General manager Joe Schoen is banking that Russell Wilson will make the difference and elevate a unit that crashed and burned last season. In Sports Illustrated's ranking of each team's offensive trio, the Giants' placement reveals Wilson's true value. Ultimately, New York ranked 23rd, between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. Advertisement 'This isn't a trio that will get the Giants to the Super Bowl, or likely even the playoffs, but it's better than what the team has been trotting out in recent years,' Matt Verderame wrote. 'Nabers is a burgeoning superstar after posting a 1,000-yard season as a rookie, while Wilson is basically Joe Montana compared to Daniel Jones and Tommy DeVito. Tracy is also a solid back after registering 839 yards and five touchdowns on 4.4 YPC last year.' It goes without saying that the quarterback position held New York back a season ago, which means Wilson doesn't have to be elite to represent a massive improvement. Bridging the gap from bad to average can net serious benefits, especially if the Giants' defense takes advantage of their newfound opportunities. Wilson ranked 21st in expected points added per play, 26th in success rate, and sixth in completion percentage over expected (per rbsdm). Jones, in his shortened season, ranked 27th, 19th, and 16th, respectively. Also adding to New York's upswing is the perception of Nabers. Heading into his rookie year, Nabers was a high-profile prospect but still an unknown. By the end month of games, he put that to rest. Emerging as a superstar undoubtedly played a role in adding credibility to the unit. Advertisement Ultimately, it's hard to see the Giants' offense emerging as above-average in 2025. If it can provide a stable environment for Jaxson Dart to eventually blossom, Wilson will have done more than enough for his one season in New York. LOS ANGELES - Who is Luisangel Acuna? He's a 23-year-old New York Mets infielder from Venezuela, April's National League Rookie of the Month and the younger brother of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. The younger Acuña was one of the Texas Rangers' top prospects when the Mets acquired him in exchange for Max Scherzer in July 2023. The speedy, slick-fielding middle infielder made his Major League debut last September and has been with the Mets since Opening Day this year. Before the Acuña brothers get set to face each other for the first time later this month (Luisangel traveled to Atlanta with the Mets late last year, but Ronald was still recovering from his torn ACL at the time), we caught up with Luisangel during the Mets' trip to Los Angeles this week to get to know him better. (Note: Questions and answers were through an interpreter and may be edited for clarity or brevity.) If you were to ask your family and friends to describe you as a person, what would they say? They would say I'm a happy guy, that I'm the type of person who will fight and do whatever to achieve their dreams. And that I'm a humble person, that's what they would say. What do you like to do when you're not at the field? I like to be with family. I like to go out to the rivers where I'm from, because we're kind of on the coast of Venezuela, so I like to go to the rivers with my family and spend time there. What do you like to do there? Sometimes we'll go there and have, like, a barbecue, grilling there and just hanging out. What's your go-to meal when you're back home? Whenever I go to Venezuela, I have to have fish. How does the fish compare here? Here, in the states, I just eat salmon. Are you a cook yourself? No, no. Who's the best cook in your family? I think my grandmother's the best one. My mom's a close second, but I think my grandmother's the best one. How much do you miss that home cooking? I don't miss it too much just because in New York there are a lot of Latin restaurants I can go to, and I can order arepas or whatever I want, so I can get my fix that way. You won the NL Rookie of the Month Award in April. What did that mean to you or show you? It felt good. I didn't know I had won it until they told me when I got here. My brother called me, congratulated me, but it was definitely an honor to be able to win an award like that. You mentioned chatting with your brother. How much have you leaned on Ronald going through the ups and downs of a season? Yeah, whenever we're in Venezuela, we train a lot together. The thing he always tells me is whenever I go out to play, be consistent, have the same type of discipline and work hard. How competitive were you guys growing up? Yeah, I would say we're competitive, but it's like a fun competition. It's one of those where he's just challenging me to get better. For instance, whoever has more hits this month, the one who loses pays for a dinner or something like that. But it's really just innocent competition. I heard you liked basketball growing up. Who's the better basketball player? My brother's better than me. He's taller than I am. Do you have the edge anywhere? Is there an activity where you're like, 'I'm better than him' in this? I'm faster than him. Last September, Ronald was injured when you went to Atlanta. Now, you're set to face him later this month. How much have you guys thought about that trip? Even before he came back from his injury this year, he had been telling me, 'Hey, the Mets are going to come in June.' So, I know he's been really excited about that potential opportunity.
