Child dead after school bus, zoo trip tragedy
It is understood that the bus, which was returning from Exmoor Zoo in Barnstaple, which is west of Bristol in the UK, came off a rural road near an intersection in Wheddon Cross, when it overturned and plunged around six meters down an embankment.
Local reports suggest there were between 60 - 70 students on the bus, including many who became trapped in the wreckage.
A large-scale emergency response was activated as local police, ambulance services and fire and rescue crews raced to the scene. Five helicopters were also deployed.
Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington from Somerset Police confirmed one child had died in the tragic event.
'We can confirm tonight that one child has sadly died,' he said on Thursday.
'A formal identification process will need to be carried out, but our thoughts and sympathies are with their family, who we are in contact with.
'A specially-trained officer will be providing them with support.'
A further 21 children were taken to hospital with injuries, with the extend of those injuries not yet revealed.
Gavin Ellis from Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said crews carried out 'multiple extractions', describing the operation as 'complex'.
'We were mobilised to a major incident of a coach that had overturned onto its roof and slid approximately 20ft down the embankment,' he said on Thursday.
'Our crews carried out a number of extractions and rescues in extremely difficult circumstances, and they also supported our ambulance colleagues with casualty treatment.
'This was a very complex and technically difficult incident for our crews to deal with, and I'm grateful for the tireless effort and actions of the crews in doing everything they could for those who were trapped and as quickly as safely as possible.'
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer shared a statement after it was confirmed that a child had died.
'A heartbreaking update on the school bus crash in Somerset,' he wrote on X.
'There are no adequate words to acknowledge the death of a child.
'All my thoughts are with their parents, family and friends, and all those affected.
'Thank you to the emergency workers who are responding at pace - I'm being kept up to date on this situation.'
Minehead Middle School had taken the year five students to Exmoor Zoo as part of its 'Enrichment Week' program.

BYD to start first car assembly in Pakistan by mid-2026
China's BYD has announced plans to commence the assembly of its first electric car in Pakistan by July or August 2026, aiming to meet the increasing electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle demand in the region, a company executive said, according to Reuters. This development comes as part of BYD's strategic expansion in the Asia-Pacific market and follows the company's plan to initiate vehicle sales in Pakistan last year. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The Insurance Savings You Expect BYD Pakistan sales and strategy vice president, Danish Khaliq, revealed to Reuters that the new assembly plant, currently under construction since April near Karachi, represents a collaboration between BYD and Mega Motor Company, a subsidiary of Pakistani utility Hub Power. The facility is expected to have an initial production capacity of 25,000 units annually on a double shift schedule. However, he did not provide details on when the plant would reach full capacity or when mass production would start. Khaliq further explained that the plant would begin by assembling imported parts and locally producing non-electric components. The initial focus will be on supplying the domestic market, with the possibility of exporting to other right-hand drive countries in the region if it makes economic sense. BYD has already commenced delivering imported EVs in the country since March, with sales surpassing internal targets by 30%, although exact numbers were not disclosed. The market for EVs and plug-in hybrid cars in Pakistan is expected to grow significantly, with Khaliq anticipating a three to fourfold increase by 2025 from around 1,000 units last year. Khaliq noted that BYD is aiming for a 30-35% market share in this segment. According to a HUBCO filing, BYD Pakistan reported a profit of around PKR444m ($1.56m) in the March quarter of this year. The Pakistani market is set to welcome the upcoming launch of BYD's Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickup truck. The Pakistani government is promoting EV adoption by reducing power tariffs for chargers by 45% in January and encouraging the establishment of private charging stations, addressing the current lack of infrastructure for all-electric vehicles. Caitlin Clark still has no timetable for return following further medical evaluation this week
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark still has no time table to return, the team said Thursday following further medical tests this week. No further injuries were discovered during this week's evaluations. Clark has missed three games — including last weekend's WNBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis — since injuring her right groin July 15 against the Connecticut Sun. She traveled with her team to New York for their loss to the Liberty on Tuesday night. The Fever said Clark is continuing to work with team medical staff on her recovery and rehabilitation. Clark's current injury is the latest in a string of difficulties for the Fever star, which has included a left groin injury and a left quad strain earlier in the season. ___ AP WNBA:
