Smartphone IP ratings explained: What are IP68 and IP69, and are they waterproof?
Now, as a general consumer, it might be confusing as to what these numbers mean in real life. It is not really hard to understand. These numbers denote different levels of protection in different ratings. What you need to understand before getting started is that the first digit of this number denotes protection against dust, and the second digit denotes protection against water.
When a smartphone features a combination of two different ratings, that means it is protected against the different types of ingress that particular rating allows for. So here, without much further ado, let us understand different types of popular smartphone IP ratings.

If a smartphone has an IP68 rating, this means that the device is dust-sealed and can be submerged in water for long periods, often beyond 1 metre in depth, under conditions specified by the manufacturer. This makes a smartphone suitable for accidental submersion in freshwater bodies like a lake or river, but, of course, it cannot be too deep, or this protection will not apply.
If a smartphone has an IP69 rating, this allows for dust sealing as well as the ability to withstand high-pressure and high-temperature water jets. This allows for endurance during extreme conditions, such as very harsh environments and industrial cleaning processes.
If your smartphone has an IP rating that starts with 'X' (eg, IPX8), this means it has not been officially rated for dust resistance. The subsequent digit for water resistance still applies. So, if a phone has an IPX8 rating, that means your phone will function even after being submerged in freshwater for up to 30 minutes, under specific conditions.
It goes without saying, but even if your phone has the best IP rating and you're ready to submerge it in a pool, if for some reason it gets water-damaged, your smartphone company won't repair it under warranty. The key word here is 'water-resistant', not waterproof. So, if they detect water damage, your phone's warranty will be void.

Apple ramps up India output as Foxconn begins iPhone 17 production at Bengaluru plant
Taiwanese electronics major Foxconn and Apple's key supplier has started production of iPhone 17 at its new Bengaluru factory This marks a significant milestone for the facility, which is Foxconn's second-largest iPhone manufacturing unit outside China and has been set up at an investment of around $2.8 billion (about Rs 25,000 crore). The Bengaluru unit, located in Devanahalli, is now operational alongside Foxconn's Chennai plant, where iPhone 17 production is also underway, as per sources close to the development. This follows the local production of iPhone 16 series last year around the same time-frame, ahead of its global and India launch. However, Apple or Foxconn were yet to officially comment on the development. The new facility had faced a brief setback earlier this year after several Chinese engineers left abruptly, but Foxconn has since managed to bring in experts from Taiwan and other locations to bridge the gap. Apple is betting big on India as a manufacturing hub. The company is expected to scale up iPhone production to 60 million units this year, compared to 35–40 million units in 2024–25. In the year ended March 31, 2025, Apple assembled 60 per cent more iPhones in India, worth an estimated $22 billion. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently underlined India's growing importance in the company's global supply chain. After announcing financial results on July 31, he revealed that a majority of iPhones sold in the US in June 2025 were made in India. During the second-quarter earnings call, Cook also confirmed that all iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter were shipped from India. An analysis by S&P Global shows that iPhone sales in the US touched 75.9 million units in 2024. With March 2025 exports from India at 3.1 million units, Apple will need to double shipments through expanded capacity or divert more devices meant for the domestic market to meet this demand. Meanwhile, Apple's presence in India's smartphone market continues to grow. Supplies rose 21.5 per cent annually to 5.9 million units in the first half of 2025, with the iPhone 16 emerging as the most shipped model. In the June quarter alone, Apple's shipments in India rose nearly 20 per cent year-on-year (YoY), giving it a 7.5 per cent market share. The broader Indian smartphone market, however, remained dominated by Chinese brands, with Vivo leading at 19 per cent share during the same quarter, according to IDC. The launch of the Bengaluru factory is seen as a major step in Apple's strategy to diversify its production base away from China and strengthen India's role as a global manufacturing hub.

iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: Upgrades, changes, and what might catch you off guard
Apple's next flagship smartphone, the iPhone 17, is already generating buzz even before its official announcement. With its expected launch just weeks away, many buyers are weighing the decision: purchase the iPhone 16 now or wait for the incoming model. While Cupertino-based tech giant has yet to confirm its launch date and other details, September is widely speculated as the release month, and leaks are already pointing to possible changes over the iPhone 16. Let's take a look at this comparison of the rumoured specifications to help you decide whether to wait for the iPhone 17 or stick to the current model. iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: Key rumoured changes, design tweaks, and price details you should check before making any decision. iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: Display Upgrades Leaks and rumours suggest that Apple could finally bring a 120Hz refresh rate to the standard iPhone 17 model. This feature, previously limited to Pro variants, would offer smoother scrolling and possibly an always-on display for quick notifications without waking the screen. The Pro lineup might get a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective coating, but the standard model's durability could remain similar to the iPhone 16. While more megapixels do not guarantee better photos, the change could benefit content creators and social media users. Although the rear camera setup on the standard model is likely to remain unchanged, with a dual-camera setup like the iPhone 16. Also, the rear camera layout will likely retain the vertical design for standard models, while the Pro series continues with its broader horizontal 'visor' setup. Apple might also use 'metalens' technology to shrink Face ID components, making the Dynamic Island slightly smaller and increasing usable screen area in comparison to the iPhone 16. iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: Performance and features Both iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 are expected to be powered by the A18 chip, which suggests similar raw performance. RAM could differ: 8GB for the regular model and 12GB for Pro and Air variants. Both will run iOS 26, featuring Apple Intelligence tools like Adaptive Power for optimised battery performance. If you're choosing to wait, then it could give you access to the latest features and upgrades, while those opting for the iPhone 16 may benefit from a price drop after the iPhone 17's release. Although the iPhone 17's upgrades appear modest, its release comes as Apple approaches the iPhone's 20th anniversary in 2026, a milestone that could usher in more significant design shifts, including a possible foldable model.

iPhone 17 Air launching next month: Price, display, processor, battery and everything expected
Apple's iPhone 17 series is all set to make its debut worldwide during a launch event in September. While the company has not yet revealed the exact date for the event, we already have plenty of details about the upcoming devices. Among the most exciting models this year is the iPhone 17 Air, a new addition to the lineup that will replace the Plus variant. The iPhone 17 Air is set to be the lightest and slimmest iPhone model to date and will compete directly with the likes of the Samsung S25 Edge. Here's a look at everything we know about the phone so far. If leaks turn out to be true, the iPhone 17 Air could pack a 6.6-inch ProMotion 120Hz LTPO AMOLED display, which would make it just an inch smaller than the iPhone 16 Plus from last year. Rumours suggest that Apple had initially planned on a 6.9-inch screen for the iPhone 17 Air but then reduced the size to avoid bending issues. Meanwhile, the front camera on the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be placed on the left side of the Dynamic Island instead of the right, as seen on the iPhone 16 series. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to come with a horizontal bar for the camera island, distinct from the new camera placement on the iPhone 17 Pro lineup. There is some discrepancy over the thickness of the iPhone 17 Air, with leaks pointing to either around 5.5mm or 6mm. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has previously predicted a 2mm decrease in thickness for the iPhone 17 Air compared to the current iPhone 16 Pro model. The newest member of the iPhone series is expected to come in four colour variants: black, white, light gold, and light blue. It is also expected to feature the Camera Control and Action Button, like the iPhone 16 series, while including support for MagSafe charging. There are multiple leaks about the processor of the iPhone 17 Air. Some suggest the phone could have the A19 Pro processor, while others state it could feature the standard A19 chip. Another possibility is that Apple could use the A19 Pro chipset on the iPhone 17 Air but with fewer GPU cores than the iPhone 17 Pro models. The phone is expected to come with 12GB of RAM, similar to the iPhone 17 Pro series. It is also likely to include vapour chambers to spread heat evenly, reduce thermal throttling, and ensure consistent performance during heavy tasks. While Apple is said to use Qualcomm chips for other iPhone 17 models, the Cupertino-based tech giant is likely to employ its in-house 5G modem on the iPhone 17 Air. The inclusion of this chip could enable 5G download speeds of up to 4Gbps. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to come with a single 48MP wide-angle sensor, following the iPhone 16 lineup. The presence of only one shooter could mean the iPhone 17 Air may not capture spatial photos or videos unless Apple introduces software-based tweaks. Like other iPhone 17 models, the iPhone 17 Air is likely to feature a new 24MP front-facing camera, touted to improve image quality and allow for more cropping without significant loss in quality. There are multiple leaks about the iPhone 17 Air's battery, with most suggesting either a 2,800mAh or 2,900mAh setup. This likely means it will have worse battery life than other iPhone 17 series models. One leak suggested that the iPhone 17 Air could allow around 60 to 70 percent of users to go a full day without charging. For other iPhone 17 models, that figure is closer to 80 to 90 percent. Current leaks suggest that the iPhone 17 Air could be priced at $899 for the base variant, the same as last year's iPhone 16 Plus. However, this could change by the time Apple introduces the iPhone 17 series in September due to rising component costs and tariffs imposed by the US government.
