Netanyahu says new Gaza offensive will start soon
Netanyahu, speaking after his security cabinet on Friday approved a much-criticised plan to take control of Gaza City, said he had no choice but to 'complete the job' and defeat Hamas to free hostages seized from Israel.
Gaza City, the enclave's most populous centre, came under escalating Israeli air strikes late on Sunday, witnesses said. At least five people were killed at a sandwich shop in the Sabra neighbourhood, health officials at Shifa Hospital said.
Palestinian media said a missile hit a tent used by journalists near the hospital, and the head of Shifa Hospital, Muhammad Abu Salamiyah, said on Al Jazeera television seven people were killed there. Tank fire was also reported in the area.
Al Jazeera said five of its staff died in the attack, including journalists Anas Al Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh and three photojournalists.

SANEF condemns targeting of journalists
GAZA CITY - Various organisations have condemned the killing of five Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza at the weekend. The killing was reported as a targeted Israeli strike on a tent used by media near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Now the South African National Editors' Forum says not only is this unacceptable, but it's a grave threat to the public's right to information.

EU ready to do plastic pollution deal 'but not at any cost'
GENEVA - The European Union is ready to do a deal to land a groundbreaking treaty on plastic pollution, but not at any cost, the EU's environment commissioner insisted Tuesday. With little over two days left to strike a global accord in talks at the UN in Geneva, Jessika Roswall said it was "time" to clinch a deal between oil-producing countries and more ambitious nations, including EU states. Five previous rounds of talks over the past two and a half years have failed to seal an agreement, including a supposedly final round in South Korea late last year. The current talks in Geneva opened a week ago but are due to close on Thursday. "The EU is ready to do a deal but not at any cost," Roswall told reporters. "We do like plastic... and we will continue to need it. However, we don't like plastic pollution and it's time to end plastic pollution as quickly as possible," the commissioner said. She said any treaty should give businesses the certainty of a clear global framework in which to operate. A cluster of mostly oil-producing states calling themselves the Like-Minded Group -- including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Russia and Iran -- want the treaty to focus primarily on waste management. The EU and others want to go much further by reining in plastic production -- which on current trends is set to triple by 2060 -- and by phasing out certain especially toxic chemicals. - Drama in the pipeline - Danish Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke admitted that the "wide gap" between the rival camps was making the negotiations a challenge but said the work of tackling plastic pollution "will only get harder the longer we wait. So now's the time". "There's going to be a whole lot more drama in the days to come," he said, "but our goal is this drama should end up in a deal", he said, speaking alongside Roswall at the United Nations. He said all parties, including the EU, had to re-examine their red lines and see where they could tweak them in the interests of landing a deal by Thursday. "If we all stick to our red lines then a deal is impossible," he said. "So we have to look at those red lines and we have to negotiate and compromise -- because we will be worse off if we don't succeed in making a deal.

Gaza's Murdered Children: 18 000 Names We Must Never Forget
Israel has murdered 18 000 children in 700 days. That's roughly 1 child every hour for 700 days. Let that sink in. 18 000 young lives ended by a ruthless genocide of Palestinians by an Israeli regime hellbent on exterminating a people through bombs, bullets and barricades. Just this week, five journalists were assassinated by Israel's Zionist regime, bringing to over 270 the number of journalists and media workers killed in this latest escalation of conflict since October 7, 2023. No human should turn a blind eye to the atrocities committed by the apartheid state of Israel. It is morally reprehensible, cruel and savage. This is why we have chosen as a media organisation to honour the murdered children of Palestine. When you visit <> today, you will see the names of these children appearing on your screen. There is also a special report – – where you will find the names listed of all 18,000 children killed since then. This list of names is not just Israel's shame, but the shame of everyone who continues to turn a blind eye to this genocide. The fact that children continue to be counted among the murdered Palestinians as this genocide drags on is an indictment of the collective humanity of the world. These are their names. We dare not forget.
