WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Ryan Blaney bested Shane van Gisbergen in Cup Series road course qualifying by three hundredths of a second on Saturday, capturing the pole position at Watkins Glen International. HT Image
Blaney turned a lap of 1 minute, 11.960 seconds in the No. 12 Ford, edging van Gisbergen's No. 88 Chevrolet (1 minute, 11.993 seconds).
Starting first in Sunday's 110-lap race at Watkins Glen was a surprise for Blaney, who has only three top 10 finishes on the 2.45-mile track. The 2023 Cup champion is mired in a 22-race slump without a top-five finish on a road course.
'What a cool pole,' said Blaney, who earned the 150th Cup pole position for Team Penske. 'I'm a pretty average road racer, and I work really hard to get better at it and try to figure out ways to be better. We've got to find a little bit of race pace, but it's nice to have one-lap speed. It's fun when you can sit on the pole at a place where I'm not very good.'
Bidding for his fourth consecutive Cup victory on a road or street course, van Gisbergen will start second after having won from the pole at Mexico City, Chicago and Sonoma.
'Man, it's amazing how close it all is for a road course,' van Gisbergen said. "My laps were OK, and there probably were some things I could have fixed. Decent start for tomorrow."
Chase Briscoe, who had started on the pole position the past two weeks at Iowa Speedway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, qualified third in the No. 19 Toyota, followed by Ross Chastain's No. 1 Chevrolet and Kyle Busch's No. 8 Chevrolet.

Nascar driver Connor Zilisch falls out of stationary Chevy while celebrating race victory on the window

A car race winning celebration turned painful when a Nascar driver attempting a hanging-out-the-window celebration slipped and fell out of his car in trying to pose on the perch for customary victory celebrations. 19-year-old Nascar driver Connor Zilisch had won at Watkins Glen International, but got his foot slipping and tangled in trying to get out of the window, getting stretchered and ended up with a broken collarbone and left hand in a sling. Zilisch said the next race on August 22 at Daytona might not be enough time to recover from the celebration-accident. He was back at Watkins Glen International a day after his scary fall in victory lane, after the ecstacy and agony of Saturday's Nascar race and Trackhouse Racing withdrew the Chevy that he was scheduled to drive in the Cup race Sunday at Watkins Glen, after the sloppy tumble, according to Guardian. 'First of all, I'm doing OK,' Zilisch told the broadcast of the Cup race. 'Very grateful to be able to walk away from that, and I guess I didn't walk away, but I'm very grateful to be walking today and to just be all right. Thank you to all the medics who took care of me, and everybody who reached out and wished me well. I do appreciate it a lot,' he said. It was a series-high sixth victory for Zilisch though he was in trouble straight away as he hit the victory lane. Beverages get tossed about and these ended up sliming up his window perch. 'Yeah, I was climbing out of the car and obviously the window net was on the door, and as soon as they started spraying water, my foot slipped,' Zilisch recalled. He remembered vivid details of the fall. 'The last thing I remember was being halfway down and falling, so I'm glad it wasn't any worse, and that the collarbone is the extent of the injuries, but hate I couldn't make it to the race today.' The August 22 at Daytona International Speedway race is obviously uncertain. 'We're still working out with all the doctors to figure out what's going to be the next steps,' Zilisch said. The bounce back driver has already logged another injury earlier and shown remarkable resilience to return. There was a one-race absence at Texas Motor Speedway because of a back injury from a crash at Talladega Superspeedway, but Zilisch had registered 11 consecutive top-five finishes and five wins since his return. The adrenaline shoot-off runs in the team. Zilisch had noted that Trackhouse teammate Shane van Gisbergen 'had a plate put in once and raced the weekend after. So I don't know if I'll be that quick, but hopefully my young bones will heal fast, and I'll be able to get back in it as soon as possible,' he said.

Prithvi Shaw's 'talent' still missed despite Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Ayush Mhatre's rise: 'Ended up spoiling his cricket'

Rohit Sharma's childhood coach Dinesh Lad asserted that Prithvi Shaw's downfall has been an unfortunate one. He said that since childhood, Shaw was a talented player but went down the wrong path, which spoiled his cricket. Shaw was once touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket, and a century on his international debut made then-head coach Ravi Shastri compare him to the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Brian Lara. The young batter once made headlines in the early years of his IPL career for his explosive stroke play, but in recent seasons, his fortunes have taken a steep dive, to the point where he went unsold in the most recent mega auction. Dinesh Lad suggested that the absence of Prithvi Shaw's talent still felt despite the emergence of Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre. (AP and IPL Images) Shaw has fallen quite low in the pecking order to make a comeback in the Indian team, while Shubman Gill, who played under his captaincy in the U-19 World Cup, recently became the Test skipper. His other U-19 teammates like Arshdeep Singh and Riyan Parag have also made a mark in the Indian team, with the former securing a place across all formats, while the all-rounder is steadily making his way into the white-ball setup. Lad, who has witnessed Shaw's journey since childhood, expressed his disappointment that he chose the wrong path, which ultimately led to his downfall. 'I have seen Prithvi since his childhood, from the time he was 10 years old. He was a highly talented player. But as I have said, everyone's journey is individual, and I don't know what exactly happened with him. Still, Prithvi Shaw was a very talented cricketer. Unfortunately, he went down the wrong path and ended up spoiling his cricket," Lad said on a podcast with Gaurav Mangalani. 'Even now there should be a batter like Prithvi Shaw' He further stated Indian cricket is in safe hands with emerging stars like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatri making waves in IPL and age-group level cricket. However, he still suggested that the talent of someone like Shaw is still missing despite the rise of other young batters. 'Even now, I feel there should be a batter like him, the way he used to bat. Although right now we have some truly outstanding batters. For example, the way Vaibhav Suryavanshi is batting, and the way Ayush Mhatre is batting. These are future cricketers in the making. They are getting ready in line. Indian cricket is almost at the top,' he added.

'Shanghai has always been a special place for me, with great fans, unforgettable memories, and a real love for the game,' Federer added. He will be returning to the Shanghai Masters for the first time since 2017, when he emerged victorious and won his second singles title at the tournament. The "Roger & Friends" doubles match offers a rare chance to see Federer back on the court alongside notable celebrities and former tennis stars. The return of one of tennis's greatest icons, even in an exhibition setting, is expected to generate excitement in Shanghai and celebrate his remarkable legacy on the sport's biggest stages. Recently, Federer made his presence felt at Wimbledon, where he was present at the stands during his old rival Novak Djokovic's fourth-round match. He was greeted by a loud round of applause as he entered the box together with his wife Mirka. He was wearing a blue suit featuring a circular purple badge on his lapel that former champions are given to denote them as members of the All England Club. The Swiss former No. 1 won his first title at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in 2003 and his eighth in 2017. The tennis icon also stood alongside Djokovic and Andy Murray at Roland Garros in a heartfelt tribute to Rafael Nadal, celebrating the Spaniard's remarkable career and unmatched dominance on the Paris clay.
