Samsung's Android 16 News Surprises Galaxy S25 And S24 Owners

Forbes14 hours ago
What now for Samsung and Android?
This should not be happening again. Whisper it quietly, but is there another set of Android update delays heading for flagship Galaxy owners as Android 16 and One UI 8 stutter at what should be the final hurdle?
Samsung's One UI 7 rollout was described as a disaster, opening a six month gap to Pixels as the Galaxy-maker seemed to struggle to get a stable releases out to its phones. Telling users this was all about ensuring a bug-free release didn't help.
Just as with Android 15, Google's latest releases brings a raft of security and privacy upgrades to phones, and given the worsening mobile threat landscape, users want these as soon as possible. One UI 8 also fixes a security issue of Samsung's own making.
Now according to SamMobile, while 'we were so close to a stable One UI 8 release for the Galaxy S25.' the bad news is the newest phone's One UI 8 beta 'removes features [and]This won't just come as a nasty surprise for Galaxy S25 owners, it will also hit Galaxy S24 owners hard — especially as they also bore the brunt of the One UI 7 delays.
'Once again,' SamMobile says, 'whether Samsung will release the One UI 8 beta build ZYG5 to Galaxy S25 testers is unknown, but the firmware exists on Samsung's servers, which indicates that the company isn't finished working on the update.'
This isn't the only bad news. SammyFans warns that 'after months of beta testing and recent feature removals, it's becoming clear that One UI 8 won't be the game-changing update many Galaxy users were hoping for. Instead, we are looking at what feels more like a routine monthly maintenance update than a major software overhaul.'
The best new security features coming with Android 16 is Google's new Advanced Protection Mode, which significantly narrows the gap to the more secure iPhone — critical when it comes to flagships costing between $1000 and $2000.
This security shield restricts dangerous wireless and fired connections, shores up safer browsing and also stops apps from being installed from outside official stores — which is a good thing. It's recommended for all security conscious users.
Fortunately, Samsung users don't need to wait for the Android 16 / One UI 8 upgrade to get almost all those benefits. Just ensure you have enabled Maximum Protections on your phone, a Samsung-specific setting that does most of the same.

Microsoft server hack hit 100 organisations: analysts

A sweeping cyber espionage operation targeting Microsoft server software has compromised about 100 different organisations, two of the groups that helped uncover the campaign say. Microsoft on Saturday issued an alert about "active attacks" on self-hosted SharePoint servers, which are widely used by organisations to share documents and collaborate within organisations. SharePoint instances run off of Microsoft servers were unaffected. Dubbed a "zero-day" because it leverages a previously undisclosed digital weakness, the hacks allow spies to penetrate vulnerable servers and potentially drop a backdoor to secure continuous access to victim organisations. ❗ ALERT ❗ ASD's ACSC is aware of a vulnerability affecting instances of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server products. Organisations should take immediate action 👉 — Australian Signals Directorate (@ASDGovAu) July 20, 2025 Vaisha Bernard, the chief hacker at Eye Security, a Netherlands-based cybersecurity firm, which discovered the hacking campaign targeting one of its clients on Friday, said that an internet scan carried out with the Shadowserver Foundation had uncovered nearly 100 victims altogether - and that was before the technique behind the hack was widely known. "It's unambiguous," Bernard said. "Who knows what other adversaries have done since to place other backdoors." He declined to identify the affected organisations, saying that the relevant national authorities had been notified. The Shadowserver Foundation confirmed the 100 figure and said that most of those affected were in the United States and Germany and that the victims included government organisations. Another researcher said that, so far, the spying appeared to be the work of a single hacker or set of hackers. "It's possible that this will quickly change," said Rafe Pilling, director of Threat Intelligence at Sophos, a British cybersecurity firm. Microsoft said it had "provided security updates and encourages customers to install them," a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement. It was not clear who was behind the ongoing hack. The FBI said on Sunday it was aware of the attacks and was working closely with its federal and private-sector partners but offered no other details. The UK National Cyber Security Centre said in a statement that it was aware of "a limited number" of targets in the United Kingdom. A researcher tracking the campaign said that the campaign appeared initially aimed at a narrow set of government-related organisations. The pool of potential targets remains vast. According to data from Shodan, a search engine that helps to identify internet-linked equipment, more than 8000 servers online could theoretically have already been compromised by hackers. Those servers include major industrial firms, banks, auditors, healthcare companies and several US state-level and international government entities. "The SharePoint incident appears to have created a broad level of compromise across a range of servers globally," Daniel Card of UK cybersecurity consultancy PwnDefend said. "Taking an assumed breach approach is wise, and it's also important to understand that just applying the patch isn't all that is required here."

New Astronomer CEO Addresses ‘Surreal' Reality After Coldplay Kiss Cam Concert Scandal

Pete DeJoy, interim CEO of tech startup Astronomer, acknowledged the 'unusual and surreal' media attention the startup has received, in his first comments since taking over for former CEO Andy Byron, who resigned amid a viral scandal in which he was caught on a 'kiss cam' hugging an Astronomer employee, who is not his wife, at a Coldplay concert. (Photo by) Getty Images DeJoy, who was installed as interim CEO over the weekend, in a LinkedIn post Monday afternoon made his first public comments since the scandal sparked a social media frenzy. DeJoy said Astronomer had received 'a level of media attention that few companies—let alone startups in our small corner of the data and AI world—ever encounter' in recent days, though he did not refer to Byron by name, nor did he specifically reference the Coldplay concert incident. DeJoy said Astronomer is 'now a household name,' but he said he 'would never have wished for it to happen like this,' calling the heightened attention 'unusual and surreal for our team.' In his post, DeJoy said Astronomer has 'never shied away from challenges' and said he would approach the role with a 'wholehearted commitment to taking care of our people and delivering for our customers,' thanking his team for its 'resilience.' Before taking the interim CEO position, DeJoy, a co-founder of the company, served as its chief product officer. Astronomer announced Saturday that Byron would step down from his role as CEO, stating the company's 'leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.' Byron resigned three days after he was caught on a 'kiss cam' at a Coldplay concert in Foxborough, Massachusetts, hugging Kristin Cabot, Astronomer's chief people officer, who is not his wife. Cabot is still listed as chief people officer on the company's leadership page, which now also reflects DeJoy's status as interim CEO. Once the camera cut to Byron and Cabot, Cabot broke free from his arms and covered her face as Byron moved out of frame. 'Either they're having an affair, or they're just very shy. I'm not quite sure what to do,' Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin said. The incident—viewed as a scandal that may have revealed an extramarital affair—quickly went viral on social media, sparking plenty of memes and parodies, as well as discussions about privacy. Byron has not yet commented following the incident, despite the spread of a fake statement in which he appeared to apologize and quote Coldplay lyrics. Astronomer confirmed in its statement announcing Byron's resignation he had not made a statement himself. Tangent In the days since last week's Coldplay concert, several high-profile artists have poked fun at the incident at their own shows. Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher said at a concert in England on Sunday: 'Don't worry, we ain't got any of that Coldplay, snidey fucking camera sh—. It doesn't matter to us who you're f—ing mingling with.' Country star Morgan Wallen joked at an Arizona concert Friday that anyone who is 'here with their side chick or whatever' is 'safe.' During a concert in South Carolina on Thursday, Luke Bryan joked: 'We're gonna shine our cameras on anybody.' Coldplay acknowledged the scandal at a concert in Madison, Wisconsin, on Saturday. 'We'd like to say hello to some of you in the crowd. How we're gonna do that is we're gonna use our cameras and put some of you on the big screen,' Martin said, to laughs from the crowd.
