Aussie cities ranked among the least friendly for EVs
A comprehensive global analysis by Compare the Market, which assessed 106 cities, found that some of Australia's major cities consistently landed in the bottom 10 across five crucial factors for EV readiness, including incentives and charging station availability.
Each city was ranked based on the following factors: chargers per capita, national average electricity cost, incentives score, EV sales relative to the city's population, and the number of EVs per capita.
While some cities are better equipped for electric vehicles than others, it doesn't look good for Australia.
Canberra emerged as Australia's top performer, securing the 33rd spot globally with a score of 2.94 out of 10.
Hobart ranked 89th, trailing behind the Gold Coast, which secured the 88th position. Perth performed a little better, achieving 66th place in the rankings.
Brisbane also outperformed Hobart, landing in 85th position. And in a closely contested comparison, Melbourne was ranked 73rd, just ahead of Sydney, which came in at 74th.
While electric cars have gradually made their way into the Australian market, they haven't achieved mainstream appeal, and most states and territories have limited incentives for EV owners.
While Queensland and New South Wales have previously offered rebates and subsidies for EV purchases, they initiatives have since ended, with EV owners getting at least one incentive: discounts on car registration fees every year.
Canberra stood out as an exception, receiving full marks for its comprehensive incentives, which included registration discounts, rebates on the purchase of an electric car, and grants for installing charging stations, helping it achieve a higher ranking than other Australian cities.
Another significant challenge affecting the adoption of electric vehicles in Australia is the national average electricity cost, which is notably higher than the global average.
In addition to this, Australians encounter further obstacles in embracing EV technology, such as range anxiety and high initial purchase costs, which are often associated with soft resale values.
Dutch cities claimed the top three positions in the ranking: The Hague (5.14/10), Rotterdam (5.10), and Amsterdam (5.00). The report highlighted that these cities had the highest number of charging stations per capita, a key factor in the ranking system that allowed them to surpass other EV-friendly cities.

The power distributors responsible for New South Wales's electricity network are facing mounting criticism after reports revealed that key maintenance staff have been redirected to commercial work on electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and wind turbines, despite a significant backlog of essential repairs. According to logged figures for the 2023-24 financial year, Ausgrid had 16,205 outstanding corrective jobs, Essential Energy reported 14,970, and Endeavour Energy recorded 2,699 uncompleted fixes. These tasks relate to critical infrastructure upkeep, including pole and wire repairs, aimed at ensuring public safety and reliable service. Yet, these same networks have reportedly seconded technicians from regulated maintenance duties to revenue-generating activities. Endeavour shared 89 workers with Ausconnex, a wind turbine maintenance firm working at Lake George in the last quarter alone. Essential made similar moves, reallocating 11 staff and eight executives to its commercial subsidiary, Intium. Ausgrid didn't provide exact numbers but confirmed that significant personnel had been shifted to EV charger installations. Its commercial arm, PLUS ES, recently secured a NSW government contract to install EV charging stations on Ausgrid poles. National Electrical and Communications Association CEO Oliver Judd criticised the distributors' focus on expanding into new markets. 'When thousands of jobs are not completed on time across the poles and wires that ensure a safe and reliable electricity network, it is bizarre that the networks are asking to take on more work in new markets. It could be a risk to public safety,' he told the Daily Telegraph. Similarly, NSW Liberal MP Ray Williams insisted the companies needed to 'stay in their lane'. 'Safety always has to be a priority. My concern is there could be safety implications to this,' he said. A spokesperson from the Department of Energy and Climate Change emphasised the legal obligation for distributors to maintain network integrity and segregate regulated services from commercial operations under ring-fencing rules. The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) confirmed it is considering a review of those ring-fencing guidelines. This follows mounting concern that the current framework may permit networks to slide into activity beyond the scope of public interest. Defending their practices, Endeavour stated that staff transferred to Intium roles are listed on a public register and comply with regulatory boundaries. 'Endeavour Energy prioritises essential network maintenance and repairs and does not reassign staff from these responsibilities to support non-regulated business activities,' their spokesman insisted. Essential echoed this assertion, affirming that core network repairs are treated as a priority in line with regulatory requirements. Ausgrid responded to criticism by underlining that emergency safety jobs are resolved within 24 hours and that the backlog represented just 0.3 per cent of our five million assets.

The United Kingdom has underscored its commitment to AUKUS after revealing it will sign a new 50-year treaty with Australia, amid questions over US involvement in the trilateral security pact. The treaty will be inked when Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Defence Minister Richard Marles host their UK counterparts David Lammy and John Healey in Sydney on Friday for regular Australia-UK ministerial meetings, according to British news agency PA. "This historic treaty confirms our AUKUS commitment for the next half century," UK defence secretary Healey said. While the AUKUS nuclear submarine partnership involves the US, UK and Australia, the treaty is between the latter two nations, as a Pentagon review into the agreement threatens America's future participation. Australia and the UK are expected to lay out the bilateral aspects of the agreement and explore ways the two countries can work together over the next half-century. In a joint statement, Marles and Wong said the Australia-UK Ministerial Consultations, or AUKMIN, were critical to the two nations' shared interests. "We take the world as it is — but together, we are working to shape it for the better," Wong said. Under the $368 billion AUKUS program, Australia will buy at least three Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines from the US in the early 2030s. Sovereign tech boost as feds urged to prioritise local IT solutions
These frameworks are vital, but complex, requiring specialised knowledge and operational discipline. This shift comes as the federal government's Buy Australian Plan (BAP) and Digital Sourcing Framework is laying the foundations for reshaping the way technology partners are selected. The BAP is designed to support local industry and ensure that taxpayer dollars are reinvested in Australia's economy, while the Digital Sourcing Framework encourages agencies to favour providers that meet criteria around sovereignty, value, innovation and responsiveness. In 2022‑23 alone, the Commonwealth spent $74.8 billion on goods and services, with more than $7 billion of that allocated to computing, software and communications services. There is now a compelling case for a growing share of this spend to be directed to Australian providers who can deliver secure services at scale. That's creating opportunities for firms like Brennan, an Australian systems integrator that has long served the enterprise sector and is now expanding its government footprint. Brennan's acquisition of Canberra-based CBR Cyber in March has significantly strengthened its cyber credentials and opened new doors in the public sector. 'By acquiring CBR, we are now far more accessible to government agencies, and have cleared experts on hand to deliver the secure services they require. It's fast-tracked our ability to serve government,' says Peter Soulsby, head of cybersecurity at Brennan. 'We have since accelerated the build of a sovereign SOC that will be able to deliver the highest levels of protection to the government. This investment will also benefit the hundreds of existing customers we service through our hybrid SOC today.' The integration of Brennan's national infrastructure and CBR Cyber's public sector expertise positions the firm as a viable alternative to global systems integrators – offering scale and sophistication, but with boots-on-the-ground service and governance anchored in Australia. But as Soulsby points out, demand for cyber expertise is rapidly outpacing supply. 'The real issue isn't capability gaps, it's volume,' he says. 'Everyone in cyber is working 30 to 40 per cent harder just to keep up. Demand has outstripped the system's ability to deliver. The only way to catch up is by introducing new cleared, capable talent, which is not an easy task.' The security workforce pipeline remains constrained by slow-moving processes, he says, requiring a co-ordinated effort between federal and state governments, and education providers, to build a domestic talent stream. 'But that's a four- to five-year lead time,' Soulsby adds. Shared services models are gaining appeal as organisations adopt frameworks such as the Essential Eight or ISM. However, the user experience has become essential to implementation - if controls hinder day-to-day workflows, users may resort to workarounds, ultimately undermining security rather than enhancing it. 'Shared models help avoid this by bringing in tested IP and learnings from other implementations, so agencies don't repeat past mistakes.' This pragmatic approach also extends to sovereignty itself. 'Sovereign IT isn't just about location, it's about resilience,' Soulsby says. 'In a future geopolitical scenario where we can't rely on foreign partners, we must be able to support ourselves. Investing in sovereign IT is also an investment in Australian roads, education, and jobs, because tax and spending stay onshore.' That cultural and operational alignment is especially crucial when responding to fast-evolving threats. Agencies need real-time agility – not just paper compliance – and access to cybersecurity experts who understand the local context. Delivering that kind of agility increasingly requires more than just technical fixes. This mindset – of embedding security from the outset – is fast becoming the modus operandi for leading local operators. 'We don't sell dreams. We deliver outcomes,' says Andrew Weir, federal manager at CBR Cyber. 'And increasingly, that means designing systems where cybersecurity is built in from the start – not bolted on after the fact.' As Soulsby notes, demand for locally based expertise will only grow as agencies seek tailored, context-aware support that navigates an increasingly complex cyber landscape. 'We may see a further 10 to 20 per cent spike over the next 12 to 18 months. With global supply chains increasingly unreliable, the safest way forward is to do this locally despite the economic complexity.' As agencies continue to modernise, sovereign partnerships offer a pathway that is not only secure and compliant, but also adaptive, resilient and deeply aligned with Australia's national interests.
