I would be lying if I didn't say I've become intrigued by pre- and probiotic sodas after the Poppi vending machine controversy started blowing up my whole TikTok feed. So, as someone who is constantly trying to kick their soda habit, I recently spoke to a couple of dietitians to see just how good they were for you. Turns out, they are a great alternative with a fraction of the sugar! That being said, the jury is still out on which one of these sodas actually tastes the best...
So, my 16-year-old son Evan and I decided to do a taste test of the two popular prebiotic sodas Poppi and Olipop, along with probiotic soda Culture Pop for good measure. I have no vested interest in any of these brands, and Evan has never tried any of these drinks. I tried one several years ago, but I don't remember what brand it was or what it tasted like.

Noting that there are other pre- and probiotic sodas on the market — like the recently launched SunSip — but many are not widely available in grocery stores as of now.
We went to Whole Foods and chose flavors that my coworkers and people on TikTok recommended*. The Classic Grape Olipop was one that people raved about over and over and over again. However, they didn't have the Grape Poppi to compare it to. Still, we made the executive decision to get it as a "tester" (we needed to know if these would upset our stomachs before we dove into an entire taste test).
Because we are insufferably impatient, we busted it open in the car. Before I could even explain to Evan that we have to take small sips because Olipop has 9 grams of fiber per can, he took a big swig and said, "I feel like this is going to make me shit; there's something about it. But, it is a solid 9 out of 10. YUM."

And I was also truly blown away. 10/10. This was a huge surprise because I was going in with low expectations, thinking it would taste like medicine, but it tasted super refreshing, like a sparkling Welch's grape juice. It didn't taste fake or like it was artificial. So, before we even started, the bar was super HIGH.
While we let our stomachs digest the goodness of the grape-flavored Olipop, we decided to let our drinks get really cold in the freezer. Here are the flavors we decided to try:

After an hour, our tummies were thankfully feeling just fine so we began. We started with the Poppi Doc Pop, Olipop Cherry Cola, and Culture Pop Wild Berries & Lime since they didn't have a "soda" flavor.

Evan: It tastes like Diet Coke to me. It's carbonated like soda, but I probably wouldn't drink it again. 5/10
Krista: Prebiotic "soda" flavor sounds gross, but it was actually not bad. The flavor is good; I would say it tastes most like Diet Pepsi. That being said, it's not super fizzy so it's like drinking a diet soda you got from the fountain that's been sitting for, like, five hours. 6/10
Olipop Cherry Cola — 50 calories, 9 grams of fiber, 5 grams of sugar (5 added)
Evan: This tastes exactly like Buzz Cola from the Simpsons World at Universal Studios! Buzz Cola is just okay, though, so 6/10.
Krista: I really like this at first, but then there is kind of a weird aftertaste; I can't put my finger on it. I like the cherry cola flavor, though, that is definitely there, and it tastes less flat than the Poppi one, so it gets 0.1 more points than Poppi. 6.1/10 though.

Evan: It tastes like sparkling flavored water...what's that brand, Spindrift? I think that's it. 6/10
Krista: I think it tastes like a Truly hard seltzer, and I am so sick of hard seltzer, so I am not a big fan. Obviously, this is hard to compare to a cola flavor, but even as a berry flavor, I don't like it. 4/10
Overall winner: Olipop wins if we are going specifically on taste. That being said, if you want half the calories and a bit less added sugar, I would reach for Poppi.
Moving on to the orange family. We have Poppi Orange, Olipop Orange Squeeze, and Culture Pop Orange, Mango & Lime.

Evan: It is a typical orange syrup-like flavor, kind of reminds me of the orange squirt stuff you can put in drinks (like Mio) but carbonated. 6/10
Krista: Despite my stomach literally making a loud digesting rumble after this one went down, it is not bad, but it does have a slight artificial taste to it. 7/10

Evan: This tastes like an orange energy drink. Again, I don't hate it but I feel like I gotta go with 6/10 again.
Krista: This one does taste more ~natural~ but something isn't sitting quite right with me. It is hard to describe, LOL. 6/10

Evan: I'm getting kombucha vibes on this one. The flavor is okay but I think I prefer it over the others. 7.2/10
Krista: I hate to say it, but this brand is not for me. I really wanted to like it, but I just don't, unfortunately. It's also slightly less carbonated than the other two and I love carbonated drinks. 3/10
Overall winner: Poppi Orange if we add up our votes but Evan thinks Culture Pop takes the cake here.
Here is when we decided to switch it up and blindfold ourselves for two reasons. First, we wanted to see if we could guess which brand was which. Second, so we didn't develop any kind of bias.

Evan blindfolded: Oh my gosh this is really sweet. This has to be Olipop. I think this one tastes the best. So finally, a 7/10
Krista blindfolded: I like this one; it is kind of sweet, though, and reminds me of Hawaiian Fruit Punch. This one has to be Olipop. (Despite this one having fewer calories and less sugar than its others, I was surprised to find this one was WAY sweeter!) 7.2/10

Evan blindfolded: It doesn't taste good. I can tell this is the ginger lemon one, though, and I can't remember what brand that one was. Too bitter! 4/10

And, our last blind taste test proves that you truly can't say you like one brand over the other because it truly just depends on the flavor you try...

Krista blindfolded: It tastes like a bad watermelon sucker, but something about it is making me want to keep drinking it. It's the most fake watermelon I've ever tasted but I could probably drink the whole can for some reason. I think it is Olipop because it is really sweet. It's fake but I don't hate it. 7/10

I love to hate it. 7/10
Krista: This is the Poppi one, I think. It tastes like Watermelon Pop Rocks, it is pretty tied with the other one but for different reasons. 7/10

Finally, I have to add that last night I needed to grab something at Kroger (where I snapped the pic of all the Poppis on sale at the top of this article) and felt I had to grab the Grape Poppi to see if it could top the Classic Grape Olipop. I did drink the entire can, but sadly, we agreed it does not compare. Grape Olipop is superior, and I will forever hate that I will now be tempted to spend nearly $3 on a can every time I am at the store. 😭 🍇
The overall unbiased winner when it comes to flavor — in me and my son's opinion — is Olipop. That being said, I feel like it truly depends on the flavor you like, not the brand. I also want to mention that if you're looking to add fiber, Olipop is a for-sure win (backed by an expert!), but if you're more focused fewer calories, I would opt for Poppi. Lastly, if you need probiotics and don't want any added sugar, try Culture Pop!

Since we didn't want to waste — or mess up our stomachs with too much fiber — we saved these drinks in the fridge. While I can't speak on if it's a good idea to leave these unopened in your fridge, I can tell you they are STILL carbonated after two days, so that is a plus because I know a can of soda would be completely flat after a day! Now, new research has confirmed these types of videos can put teens at risk of lifelong skin allergy. Mariia Vitkovska The new peer-reviewed study from Northwestern Medicine, published today on June 9 in Pediatrics, is raising red flags about the popular trend of teen skincare routines shared on social media. The study is the first of its kind to examine the dermatological and psychological risks tied to these viral beauty regimens. Authors found girls between the ages of seven and 18 are applying an average of six different skincare products daily, with some layering more than a dozen. "It's problematic to show girls devoting this much time and attention to their skin," said corresponding author Dr. Molly Hales, a postdoctoral research fellow and board-certified dermatologist in the department of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The financial cost is also concerning. The average teen skincare routine costs $168 a month, according to the study, with some reaching upward of $500. Despite the hype, the routines often neglect the basics: only 26 percent of daytime regimens included sunscreen—a critical oversight, especially for developing skin. Yet it's not just money being wasted. The study found that the top-viewed skincare videos featured an average of 11 potentially irritating active ingredients. This cocktail of acids, retinoids and fragrances increases the risk of allergic contact dermatitis—a lifelong skin allergy that can permanently restrict a person's use of certain soaps, shampoos and cosmetics. "That high risk of irritation came from both using multiple active ingredients at the same time, such as hydroxy acids, as well as applying the same active ingredient unknowingly over and over again when that active ingredient was found in three, four, five different products," Hales said. In one analyzed video, a content creator applied 10 separate products in just six minutes. By the end of the clip, her face was visibly red and irritated. "As she's applying the products, she begins to express discomfort and burning, and in the final few minutes, she develops a visible skin reaction," said senior author Dr. Tara Lagu, adjunct lecturer of medicine and medical social sciences at Feinberg and a former Northwestern Medicine hospitalist. The researchers also observed an unsettling pattern in the aesthetics and messaging of these viral videos. "We saw that there was preferential, encoded racial language in some cases that really emphasized lighter, brighter skin," Lagu said. "I think there also were real associations between use of these regimens and consumerism." The videos tend to offer little to no health benefit for the children watching them, researchers concluded. Yet they're virtually impossible for parents or pediatricians to monitor, thanks to the untrusted algorithms that power TikTok's "For You" page. "We're setting a very high standard for these girls," Hales said. "The pursuit of health has become a kind of virtue in our society, but the ideal of 'health' is also very wrapped up in ideals of beauty, thinness and whiteness. The insidious thing about 'skin care' is that it claims to be about health." With no health insurance, a fear of medical bills, and a history of negative experiences with doctors, the personal trainer avoided seeking professional help. Trusting in her own judgment and online research, the 28-year-old from Chattanooga, Tenn., thought she had uncovered the main cause of her symptoms: diastasis recti. It wasn't until she shared her story on TikTok that everything began to shift as followers flooded her comments with concern and encouragement to seek real answers. What she discovered after finally taking herself to the emergency room left her stunned, but somehow relieved. 'My stomach was getting bigger and just wider,' Johnson tells PEOPLE exclusively. She first began noticing minor changes in 2021 after forming a cyst, which ended up rupturing. Two years later, she started experiencing severe bloating and painful periods as well as weight gain around her stomach. She realized something was off when her belly button started shifting from an innie to an outie, and the middle of her abdomen seemed to split. Curious to know more about her symptoms, she searched the internet and discovered diastasis recti – a condition where rectus abdominis muscles separate, according to the Cleveland Clinic. After learning how to test at home using a two-finger method, Johnson was convinced diastasis recti was to blame for her symptoms. She became determined to manage the condition as best she could on her own. She avoided both gynecologists and regular doctors due to past experiences where she felt dismissed. After losing health insurance through her parents, and later at her job, she chose not to renew her coverage. 'I just felt like it was a waste of money and so I just stopped going,' Johnson reveals. Over time, she started to believe that diastasis recti, coupled with visceral fat storage and hormonal imbalance, were causing changes to her body. In less than a year, Johnson had gained over 10 pounds and could no longer fit into her old clothes. However, over a five- to six-month span, she began noticing drastic growth around her abdomen, leaving her unrecognizable and filled with self-doubt, especially in her career as a physical trainer. Johnson ate healthy and weight trained, but despite doing everything "right," nothing seemed to work. That disconnect left her feeling like a 'fraud.' 'Feeling like I'm not able to help myself makes me feel unqualified to help other people,' Johnson admits. 'It was definitely something that knocked my confidence a lot.' In April 2025, she took to TikTok to discuss her struggles in hopes of getting some outside opinions. Almost immediately, online strangers flooded Johnson's video with their thoughts, with some even questioning whether she was pregnant. The comments provided a much-needed wake-up call, and it was then that she realized diastasis recti might not be the sole root of her health problems. 'It was insane. This army of women came to my rescue, you know, saying, 'this is exactly what I experienced. You look like me whenever I had that,'' she recalls. 'So once I got confirmation from other people, it gave me the confidence to be like, okay, you know what? This actually might be a bigger issue than I thought. I'm gonna go get it checked out.' As followers became more invested in her health journey, Johnson continued to document the entire experience on TikTok. She started by taking them on a trip to the emergency room on May 1st. 'This is not anybody's fault but my own,' Johnson said in a TikTok video while packing to leave for the ER. 'My own pride got in the way of me getting help because I would justify my symptoms - 'like nothing's wrong with me and I know best.' ' After a number of tests and scans, it was confirmed that she did have diastasis recti. However, she was also diagnosed with an ovarian cyst close to the size of a newborn baby. Johnson read the results out loud in a video, stating that she had a 'massive cystic mass extending from the left upper quadrant to the floor of the pelvis measuring up to 48 centimeters.' With the news, many followers questioned why she hadn't seen a doctor sooner. She likened her health journey to a 'toxic relationship,' noting how it's easy to think everything is fine when change happens over time. Things didn't fall apart overnight, but through small changes that added up. By the time she noticed, it was clear something had to change. 'Ya'll are really giving me a reality check,' she said in a video responding to comments. 'I feel like I have a bunch of big sisters that are getting on to me but in a loving way – calling me in, not calling me out – and I hear you.' With the help of social media, Johnson was able to find the confidence to see a gynecologic oncologist, who decided the best course of action would be to surgically remove the cyst. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, the trainer felt relieved. 'I have some satisfaction…because I know that the thing that I've been dealing with for the past four years, that I thought I would be struggling with for the rest of my life, there's a solution, and, like, one day I won't have to struggle with it,' she tells PEOPLE. Throughout her journey, Johnson has remained committed to staying positive online. She tried to make light of the situation by making sex reveal cupcakes and naming her large mass, 'Cysterella." 'I really feel like, no matter how it turns out, it's going to serve a bigger purpose than just me and that gives me a lot of hope,' she shares. Much of her energy and optimism comes from her strong faith. Johnson believes that every experience, whether good or bad, has the potential to lead to a meaningful takeaway. On May 22, Johnson underwent a successful surgery with 27 pounds of fluid being drained out of her body. Unfortunately, the doctors had to remove an ovary and a fallopian tube in the process of pulling out the cyst, which Johnson knew was a possibility. Regarding her diastasis recti, Johnson's doctors are hoping it heals over time, especially now that the main cause of all her issues has been resolved. By sharing her story, she remains hopeful that others will learn from it and use it as an opportunity to self-reflect on their own health journeys. 'Don't suffer in silence,' Johnson emphasizes. 'Don't just sit back and hide your shame or embarrassment about what's going on with your body because most people are doing the best that they can, and we can't help it.' Johnson has decided that she will keep up with her yearly checkups and keep a closer eye on her health. 'I've seen so many other comments of people saying that they are now scheduling appointments where they're gynecologists or the doctor or the specialist or whoever because of me, and because of that, it makes all of this worth it,' she said in a TikTok video. 'If I had to go back and go through everything that I did for the same result, I absolutely would," she added. "And now that I know better, I'm gonna do better.' Read the original article on People
