Apple boosts subscription price for TV+ to $12.99
The Apple Inc. logo is seen hanging at the entrance to the Apple store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan, New York, U.S., October 16, 2019. REUTERS/Mike Segar/File Photo (Reuters) -Apple will raise the price of streaming service Apple TV+ by $3 starting Thursday, following a similar move by Comcast-owned NBCUniversal's Peacock. The ad-free streaming service will now cost $12.99 per month, up from $9.99 earlier, for new subscribers in the U.S. and select international markets, Apple said in a statement. The annual subscription price remains unchanged, as does the pricing for Apple One, which bundles Apple TV+ with services such as iCloud and Apple Music, among others. Apple TV+ is known for psychological thriller 'Severance', which garnered 27 Emmy Award nominations this year, and popular original shows such as 'Ted Lasso' and 'The Morning Show'. However, the streaming network has lagged behind rivals Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video in terms of subscribers. The iPhone maker does not break down the subscribers for Apple TV+, but it is estimated to have reached 40.4 million at the end of 2024, according to five analysts polled by Visible Alpha. In comparison, Netflix had over 300 million paid memberships at the end of last year. Apple had last increased the subscription price for Apple TV+ by $3 in October 2023. Peacock raised the prices for both its ad-supported plans and premium plus plans by $3 in July. Apple is losing more than $1 billion a year on Apple TV+, the Information had reported in March. It has spent more than $5 billion a year on content since launching Apple TV+ in 2019 but trimmed it by around $500 million last year. Bursa Malaysia Up 70 Points Since Tabling Of 13MP
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia has recorded an increase of 70 points up to today since the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) was tabled, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. Amir Hamzah, who is also the acting Economy Minister, said the rise in Bursa Malaysia's performance reflects the market's acceptance of the 13MP. 'We must look at the data in its entirety and not rely on a single data point,' he said when winding up the debate on the motion on the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday. Amir Hamzah was responding to a query from Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang) about the market and Bursa Malaysia's reaction to the tabling of the 13MP. Commenting on claims that the 13MP lacks a 'wow factor', Amir Hamzah said the document must be studied in depth, and efforts to reshape development cannot simply depend on existing policies and approaches that have long been in place. 'The 13MP sets out priorities to implement several reforms, including restructuring the economy towards a value-creation-based economy and transitioning into an artificial intelligence-driven nation. 'The 13MP also outlines education reform, labour market reform, housing reform, healthcare reform, and public service reform as the government's key focus areas,' he said. Amir Hamzah emphasised that the 13MP was designed using a multi-dimensional approach across four pillars to ensure policies are not viewed in silos, but instead emphasise the interlinkages between various aspects of development. 'These pillars are strengthening economic diversity, enhancing social mobility, accelerating public service reform, and improving people's wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

7-Eleven Q2 net profit down 2.6pct on higher expenses
KUALA LUMPUR: 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd's net profit slipped 2.63 per cent to RM19.96 million in the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q25) from RM20.5 million a year earlier, weighed down by higher expenses. Revenue, however, rose 7.16 per cent to RM805.59 million from RM751.8 million, driven by new store openings and festive spending during Hari Raya. This was the group's highest quarterly revenue since its RM1.07 billion peak in 2Q23. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, 7-Eleven said operating expenses climbed 10.6 per cent during the quarter, reflecting longer operating hours and the addition of 58 new stores, bringing its total outlets to 2,651. Selling and distribution costs also increased 14.1 per cent to RM228.3 million from RM200.06 million. For the first half of 2025, net profit declined 8.25 per cent to RM30.59 million from RM33.33 million, despite revenue rising 8.69 per cent to RM1.56 billion from RM1.44 billion. The earnings decline was mainly attributed to higher costs from the group's CAFé by 7-Eleven expansion, which has now grown to more than 700 outlets. On prospects, 7-Eleven said challenges remain, including higher base electricity tariffs in Peninsular Malaysia from July 2025 to December 2027. It noted that the expanded service tax, covering additional sectors such as property rentals, construction, financial services, private healthcare, education and beauty services, would further add to inflationary pressures and weigh on disposable incomes of lower- and middle-income households. "Externally, the implementation of reciprocal US tariffs, coupled with ongoing geopolitical conflicts, has heightened market risks and volatility. "Despite these challenges, the group remains focused on its strategic initiatives that align with prevailing market trends. "With an expected increase in overall consumer spending, the group remains optimistic about delivering a stronger performance in 2025," it said.
