ASCC: Kuwait to witness total lunar eclipse on Sept. 7
KUWAIT: The Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Center announced that Kuwait will witness a total lunar eclipse on Sunday, September 7. In a statement to KUNA, the center said the eclipse will occur during the full moon, when the Earth's shadow completely covers the lunar disk. The phenomenon will also be visible across the Gulf region, as well as parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. The center explained that the eclipse will pass through three phases: partial, when part of the moon enters Earth's shadow; total, when the entire moon is obscured and turns reddish-orange due to atmospheric light refraction; and penumbral, when the moon only passes through the Earth's outer shadow, dimming its brightness without full obscuration. According to the center's calculations, the eclipse will begin in Kuwait at 6:28 pm, reach its peak at 11:09 pm, and end at 11:55 pm local time. — KUNA

Kuwait Among Regions To See Rare Total Lunar Eclipse
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 19: The Space Museum at Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Center has announced that Kuwait will witness a total lunar eclipse on the evening of Sunday, September 7, marking the first and last such event of the year. In a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Tuesday, the museum explained that during the eclipse, the entire disk of the moon will pass into the Earth's shadow, making it fully eclipsed. The phenomenon will be visible not only in Kuwait but also across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. The museum outlined the three types of lunar eclipses: Total eclipse – the moon completely enters the Earth's shadow, causing the entire disk to be eclipsed. Partial eclipse – part of the moon enters the Earth's shadow, leaving a portion of its disk obscured. Penumbral eclipse – the moon passes only through the penumbra, the outer part of Earth's shadow, causing a subtle dimming of its light without full eclipse. The first phase in Kuwait will begin when the moon enters the penumbra, slightly dimming its brightness. This will be followed by the partial eclipse phase, as part of the moon moves into the Earth's shadow. The final total eclipse phase occurs when the moon fully enters the Earth's shadow, during which it takes on a reddish-orange hue caused by light scattering and refraction in the Earth's atmosphere. According to local time in Kuwait, the eclipse will begin at 6:28 pm, reach its peak at 9:11 pm, and conclude at 11:55 pm, based on calculations by the Space Museum.

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 19: His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has issued a decree appointing Dr. Faisal Salman Mohammed Al-Humaidan as Director General of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) with the rank of undersecretary, state media reported Tuesday. The appointment, enacted under Decree No. 161 of 2025, followed approval by the Cabinet and the KISR Board of Trustees during a meeting on June 1. The decree was signed at the Seif Palace on August 18. Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Nader Abdullah Mohammed Al-Jalal was tasked with implementing the decree, which takes effect upon publication in the official gazette. KISR, founded in 1967, is Kuwait's primary research body, carrying out applied scientific and technological studies in energy, water, food security, and environmental sustainability. The institute plays a central role in supporting Kuwait's long-term development strategy, 'Vision 2035,' by advancing innovation and research-based solutions. Dr. Al-Humaidan will oversee the institute's programs and policies at a time when Kuwait is seeking to expand its research capacity, strengthen collaboration with international scientific bodies, and accelerate progress on renewable energy and climate adaptation.
