AI demand drives chip equipment sales forecast to new highs but tariff jitters cloud outlook
[SINGAPORE] Fuelled by the explosive demand for artificial intelligence (AI), global semiconductor manufacturing is poised for growth, with equipment sales projected to hit a record US$121 billion this year – surpassing last year's high – even as geopolitical tensions loom large.
While high-end AI models continue to push demand for more powerful and efficient chips, there is also growing interest in low-power AI semiconductors from global firms looking to integrate AI into everyday operations, said Alvin Nguyen, senior analyst at Forrester.
'Generative AI is an obvious driver of semiconductor growth,' he noted, adding that demand is also rising for chips used in Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing devices.
Industry group Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (Semi), similarly expects long-term semiconductor equipment demand to be driven by advances in AI-related technologies.
Global sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment by original equipment manufacturers did better than expected, increasing 10 per cent to US$117.1 billion in 2024. That momentum is expected to continue, with sales forecast to rise to US$121 billion in 2025, and further to US$139 billion by 2026, driven by growth across both front-end and back-end segments.
The front-end segment typically includes the wafer fabrication stage, while the back-end segment refers to assembly, packaging and testing.

In Singapore, industry players see AI as a long-term catalyst, with demand expected to remain strong across multiple application areas.
Executive director Ang Wee Seng of the Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA) expects AI-related demand to remain robust over the next one to two years, led by investments in data centres, edge computing and generative AI applications.
'This structural growth is creating new requirements across the value chain, from chips to cooling systems, and will continue to be a strong driver for the industry,' said Ang, adding that equipment manufacturers should expect a moderate rebound in demand by mid-2025.
Ang noted, however, that the industry is still working through the tail-end of the 2023 oversupply.
While inventory levels are improving and demand is picking up in consumer electronics, automotive and industrial segments, the recovery remains uneven across markets.
He also flagged that Asean-based suppliers could face pressures from the recalibration of the US trade policies, underscoring the importance of diversification and regional collaboration.
Similarly, Forrester's Nguyen pointed to the uncertainty created by tariffs, which have delayed investment decisions by some semiconductor players.
Big plus for smaller players
Smaller players such as Grand Venture Technology (GVT) and Frencken Group are well-positioned to ride the AI-driven wave, said SSIA's Ang, provided they remain agile and responsive to fast-evolving customer needs, such as precision components for advanced packaging and AI accelerators.
However, their smaller scale also makes them more vulnerable to tariff shifts. In this environment, supply chain resilience and broader regional market access will be critical to weathering the challenges ahead.
Conversely, Nguyen from Forrester explained that these companies may also benefit from supply chain impacts as the larger manufacturers look for alternative partners to simplify their supply chain logistics and lower overall risk.
Both GVT and Frencken Group made it to the 2025 edition of RHB's Top 20 Small Cap Jewels report, which highlights high-potential small-cap companies in Singapore.
Analysts from RHB and DBS are sanguine about the prospects of Frencken Group, which saw net profit rise 12 per cent to S$10 million in the first quarter of FY2025.
RHB analyst Alfie Yeo expects Frencken Group's outlook for the remainder of the first half to remain stable, with growth likely to continue despite tariff-related headwinds.
In fact, Yeo expects minimal tariff impact, since the group's exposure to the US is relatively small, and the tariffs primarily affect its customers rather than the company itself.
The group's sales to a key customer in Europe, along with a rebound in Asian demand helped boost the semiconductor segment revenue of its mechatronics division by 33.7 per cent to S$106.2 million. This in turn drove revenue higher to S$215.8 million – up 11.5 per cent from the corresponding year-ago period.
Yeo said that the house remained 'upbeat on Frencken Group on the back of the growth in its semiconductor and medical segments' and maintained its recommendation of 'buy', with a target price of S$1.48.
DBS analyst Ling Lee Keng also maintained her 'buy' recommendation on the group, adding that its expansion in its front-end equipment is set to boost revenue.
Ling mentioned that global industry association Semi expects the demand rebound to be accompanied by new highs in wafer shipments and surges in demand for silicon, supporting AI and various industrial applications.
However, though the upward trend can remain intact, Ling also sees a slower momentum in growth, citing cautious market sentiments as 'pickings are likely to be harder after the low-hanging fruits dwindle'.
She also maintains a 'buy' recommendation for semiconductor player GVT, which reported a 96.4 per cent jump in earnings to S$10.9 million for FY2024 from a year ago, beating DBS' estimates. Revenue grew 43.3 per cent to S$159.5 million, more than half of which came from the semiconductor segment.
For the first half of 2025, DBS projected that GVT could post year-on-year revenue growth of 31.7 to 40.5 per cent, reaching between S$90 million and S$96 million on the back of rising demand for AI-related and complexity-driven equipment sales.
The equipment maker is aiming to move up the value chain by upgrading its facilities with advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies. Its acquisition of ACP Metal Finishing has also helped stabilise and diversify its customer base, Yeo noted.
He also observed that GVT would have minimal impact from US tariffs, with less than 10 per cent exposure to them in FY2024. GVT's key customers are in the Asia and Europe markets.
'I think these companies are on the right track and working with the right semiconductor customers who are involved in the AI chip supply chain,' said Maybank analyst Jarick Seet.
Asean will stay a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain, and trying to recreate what it has even briefly in the US won't be easy, he said.
Still, Seet cautioned that no single trend can carry the industry. The semiconductor market's long-term success will hinge on sustained demand across a range of sectors.

Elon Musk projects SpaceX revenue of about $20b in 2025 WASHINGTON - Elon Musk's SpaceX will record revenue of about US$15.5 billion (S$20 billion) this year, the billionaire said on June 3, underscoring the rocket maker's growing dominance in the commercial space sector. The company's commercial revenue from space will exceed Nasa's budget of roughly US$1.1 billion in 2026, Mr Musk said in a post on X. While Nasa continues to fund deep space exploration and research missions, SpaceX has leaned on growing demand for cost-effective launch services and satellite communications to generate revenue. The company is developing a 122m-tall Starship rocket system, which the world's richest person has said will play a crucial part in sending humans to Mars. The company's reusable Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets have significantly reduced launch costs, enabling SpaceX to secure a substantial share of the global launch market. In 2024, SpaceX achieved a record-breaking year with 134 Falcon launches, making it the most active launch operator globally. SpaceX is targeting to beat that record with 170 launches by the end of the year, the company said last week, as it attempts to meet growing demand for satellite deployment. Still, SpaceX's revenue is driven largely by its satellite internet service, Starlink, which Mr Musk has said will go public, but has not provided a timeline. Katong Plaza and Novotel Singapore on Kitchener hotel were in the past two years sold to new owners. ST PHOTOS: AZMI ATHNI, ARIFFIN JAMAR New hotels to replace Katong Plaza and Novotel hotel in Kitchener Road SINGAPORE – The Novotel Singapore on Kitchener hotel and Katong Plaza are set to be replaced by new hotels. Both properties date back to around 1981, with the Kitchener Road hotel branded with different names along the way. They were in the past two years sold, and the new owners have recently secured at least provisional planning approvals from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). Worldwide Hotels subsidiary Midtown Development has permission to redevelop the Kitchener Road property into a hotel with 1,625 rooms and 1,214 sq m of retail space. The hotel opened in 1981 as President Merlin Hotel – a part of the President Hotel and Shopping Complex that also included the President Shopping Centre which opened in 1970. The hotel was later rebranded as New Park Hotel in 1990 after a $30 million facelift. In 2007, it became Parkroyal on Kitchener Road, while the shopping centre was demolished in 2017 to make way for Centrium Square. In 2023, UOL sold Parkroyal on Kitchener Road for $525 million to Worldwide Hotels, a Singapore-based firm that owns chains such as Hotel 81 and Hotel Mi. The hotel reopened in November that year as the 543-room Novotel Singapore on Kitchener , a brand under French multinational hospitality company Accor . The hotel is on a freehold 7,780.1 sq m site and has a gross floor area of 37,827.71 sq m. A spokesperson for Worldwide Hotels told The Straits Times on June 3 that it is unable to share further details about the new hotel. Katong Plaza in Brooke Road, which opened around the start of 1981 , is set to make way for a hotel with 374 rooms and 537 sq m of retail space. The strata-titled mixed-use development near Marine Parade MRT station with 132 retail units and 14 residential apartments was in 2024 sold to Fragrance Group for $180 million . At the time of the sale, the building's owners had outline permission from the URA to convert it for hotel use. The existing building is on a freehold 3,162 sq m site and has a gross floor area of 9,488 sq m. The Fragrance Group did not respond to requests for comment. When ST visited the building on May 30, most of the retail tenants had vacated their units. Some were packing up and said they had to leave by end-June. A notice dated April 16, put up alongside minutes of the building's collective sale committee's meetings, stated that owners choosing to stay in the building until July 2025 will be responsible for covering all expenses such as air-conditioner and lift maintenance fees. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioner John Ng, 70, who has operated a clinic in the mall since April 2006, said he is disappointed to leave behind neighbours of almost two decades. 'We all knew each other and were very friendly. Everyone trusted each other and I could leave my clinic unattended, knowing others would help to keep watch,' said Mr Ng. ST PHOTO: AZMI ATHNI Mr Alan Cheong, Savills Singapore's executive director of research and consultancy, expects that the Katong site will house a mid-tier hotel, given the planned number of rooms. He also pointed out that the Kitchener Road hotel is likely to be an economy-tier type geared towards mass market tourism. He added that Worldwide Hotels' plan to triple the number of rooms is 'logical', as the move will help to boost its earnings. Asked if there is sufficient demand for rooms in the Farrer Park and Marine Parade areas to justify the planned supply, analysts said Singapore's hotel market has performed strongly in the past 12 to 18 months. Mr Edwin Loo, an associate director at real estate consultancy Cistri, said: 'Much of this growth is in the mid-market and upscale segments, reflecting Singapore's success in attracting event-focused visitors as well as visitors from emerging Asia who are willing to spend but remain price-sensitive given Singapore's relatively higher room rates when compared with other regional destinations.' But he noted that the site of Katong Plaza, which is next to Roxy Square, is relatively long and narrow. Mr Edwin Loo, an associate director at real estate consultancy Cistri, felt that the planned redevelopment of Katong Plaza would be boosted if neighbour Roxy Square is also roped in. ST PHOTO: AZMI ATHNI 'An integrated development incorporating both of these sites would have resulted in a better outcome in terms of land optimisation and urban design, especially considering the need to accommodate the extensive pickup, drop-off and coach parking requirements at the ground level and the potential for a larger site to provide greater amenity for the community,' he said.
