Orillia widower to take late wife on ‘dream' trip after winning $5M jackpot

Yahoo2 days ago

An Orillia man has a grand adventure planned after winning $5 million in the Lotto 6/49 draw from March 19.
Paul Cousineau, a 51-year-old administrative professional in the hospitality industry, lost his wife last year.
'Her dream was to take an Alaskan cruise, and I want to honour that by going on one for my 52nd birthday this fall,' he told officials while claiming his winnings at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.
'I'll have her urn with me, so in a way, she'll be with me on this trip.'
Cousineau called the win 'absolutely surreal.'
'It was a regular day when I decided to pick up a ticket at my usual store,' he recounted.
'I've been buying my tickets there for years,' he said, adding that he usually uses the quick pick feature when he plays his favourite games, Lotto 6/49 and Lotto Max.
The father of two and grandfather of one admitted he doesn't check his tickets immediately after draws, and in this case, he waited about a month.
'By then, I had over 20 tickets to check,' Cousineau said.
But it wasn't the sheer volume of tickets being checked that caused the lottery terminal to freeze. But the big win didn't lead him to scream and shout in excitement.
'I remained calm and carried on with my day, only telling my cousin about my win,' he said, noting, 'I even made them take an oath of silence.'
Even when his grandson questioned him, Cousineau downplayed the incredible news.
'Unexpectedly, my grandson checked my ticket and asked, 'Did you win the jackpot?' I told him, 'No, but I won $5,000!''
He explained he wanted to keep his win a secret until he 'had the cheque in hand,' then announced the win at a family barbecue.
Cousineau, who purchased the ticket at a Circle K on Atherley Road in Orillia, added: 'I'm overjoyed and shaking. All the anticipation I've felt has led to this moment, and it's a dream come true.'

The crew of a cargo ship carrying thousands of vehicles from China to Mexico abandoned the vessel off Alaska's Adak Island when they were unable to control a fire that broke out on board. The Liberian-flagged Morning Midas ship is carrying 3,048 vehicles, including 70 electric models and 681 hybrids, the U.S. Coast Guard said. It left Yantai, China, on May 26, industry site shows, destined for Lazaro Cardenas, a major Pacific port in Mexico. There were no reported injuries among the 22 crew members of the Morning Midas, who were evacuated onto a lifeboat. The crew initiated emergency firefighting procedures with the ship's onboard fire suppression system. But they were unable bring the flames under control. They were rescued by a nearby merchant vessel called the Cosco Hellas in the North Pacific, roughly 300 miles (490 kilometers) southwest of Adak, which is in Alaska's Aleutian island chain. Adak is about 1,200 miles (1,930 kilometers) west of Anchorage, the state's largest city. The map below shows the ship's last known location. Ship's Fire Status Unknown A large plume of smoke was initially seen at the ship's stern coming from the deck loaded with electric vehicles Tuesday, according to U.S. Coast Guard photos and a Wednesday statement from the ship's management company, London-based Zodiac Maritime. The Coast Guard said the Morning Midas is estimated to have approximately 350 metric tons of gas fuel and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil onboard. "The relevant authorities have been notified, and we are working closely with emergency responders with a tug being deployed to support salvage and firefighting operations," Zodiac Maritime said in a statement. "Our priorities are to ensure the continued safety of the crew and protect the marine environment." The U.S. Coast Guard said it sent aircrews to Adak and a ship to the area. The status of the fire onboard the ship was unknown as of Wednesday afternoon, but smoke was still emanating from it, according to the Coast Guard. U.S. Coast Guard "As the search and rescue portion of our response concludes, our crews are working closely with the vessel's parent company, Zodiac Maritime, to determine the disposition of the vessel," said Rear Admiral Megan Dean, commander of the Coast Guard's Seventeenth District. "We are grateful for the selfless actions of the three nearby vessels who assisted in the response and the crew of motor vessel Cosco Hellas, who helped save 22 lives." The 600-foot (183-meter) Morning Midas, a car and truck carrier, was built in 2006. Fire Safety Risk for Cargo Ships Earlier this month, a Dutch safety board called for improving emergency response on North Sea shipping routes after a deadly 2023 fire on a freighter that was carrying 3,000 automobiles, including nearly 500 electric vehicles, from Germany to Singapore. That fire killed one person, injured others and burned out of control for a week, and the ship was eventually towed to a port in the northern Netherlands for salvage. The accident increased the focus on safety issues on the open sea and on containers that fall off the massive freighters, which have increased in size dramatically in recent decades. More than 80 percent of international trade by volume now arrives by sea, and the largest container vessels are longer than three football fields. Cancer survivor wins the lottery for a remarkable fourth time

A Canadian man has claimed a lottery jackpot for the fourth time in his life. David Serkin's latest victory came on May 3 when he claimed $1 million in a May 3 drawing of the Lotto 6-49 Gold Ball draw in Alberta, according to a press release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. This follows on from the $1 million he won in November 2024 and the $500,000 he won in August of the same year. Both victories were in the Lotto 6-49 drawing. That brings his total winnings to $2.5 million in less than a year. His first win was a $250,000 jackpot in 2013. 'I know the odds are astronomical. I don't think it'll happen again, but I still like buying tickets.' The odds of winning the jackpot are roughly 1 in 33 million, the WCLC said. Serkin, a resident of Lethbridge, around 130 miles south of Calgary, said that he has been purchasing lottery tickets for over 40 years. 'You check your ticket, and if you win, you're happy. If you don't, you can always try again,' he said. He told the WCLC's website that he is a cancer survivor and is retired. 'I am just so grateful for all of it,' Serkin said. The Lethbridge man described his recent win, saying that he was out for coffee with his sons when he checked his tickets. When he realized he had won, 'They asked to see it and said, 'Not again!' Serkin said that the last time he won, he took his wife, who he says is still in disbelief over his lucky streak, on a trip to Maui. This time, the couple is headed to Newfoundland for a vacation. After his win in November, Serkin said that he was using some of his winnings to help out his friends.
