Trudeau to speak at Sarawak sustainability, energy forum next month
Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) said other speakers will include Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, former executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme Erik Solheim, and president of the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance Ashok Khosla.
"They will share insights on climate action, inclusive growth, clean energy transitions, as well as global cooperation to tackle environmental and socioeconomic challenges," SEB, the forum organiser, said in a statement today.
Co-hosted with the state Utility and Telecommunication Ministry and the state Energy and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, the forum will be launched by the Sarawak premier on Sept 3, while Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof will close it on Sept 4, both at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
SEB said the forum aligns with Sarawak's broader sustainability objectives and energy transition priorities.
"The forum gathers regional and international industry experts and thought leaders to exchange insights, share best practices, and explore opportunities for collaboration towards a lower-carbon future," it said.
Themed "Partnerships for Our Goals – Sustainable Growth and Prosperity for the Region", the forum highlights the urgent need for collaboration in achieving shared climate and development targets through renewable energy and regional integration.
"It supports progress aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and Sarawak's Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).
SEB said that since its launch in 2019 as a five-part, 10-year thought leadership initiative, SAREF has evolved into a leading regional platform for knowledge exchange, policy dialogue, and strategic engagement on sustainable energy development.
It said that past editions have catalysed partnerships across Asean, informed policy dialogues on hydropower and grid integration, and advanced conversations on energy equity and resilience.

Pierre Poilievre seeks political comeback in Canada amid Trump shadow
TORONTO: Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative Party leader, is attempting a political comeback in Canada after a surprising defeat linked to Donald Trump's influence. Poilievre, once a frontrunner for prime minister, lost his Ottawa-area seat in April's general election as voters shifted towards Liberal leader Mark Carney. The Conservative leader now faces a critical by-election in Battle River-Crowfoot, a right-leaning Alberta district, to re-enter parliament. Experts warn that even if he wins, Poilievre may struggle to regain momentum in a political landscape still shaped by Trump's policies. Frederic Boily, a University of Alberta political scientist, noted some voters still view Poilievre as 'a little Trump,' a damaging label in Canada. New Gallup data reveals Canadian approval of US leadership at a record low of 15%, with Trump's trade policies harming key industries. Poilievre has tried distancing himself from Trump while criticising Carney's handling of US-Canada relations. 'President Trump is the one putting these tariffs on Canadians, but Mark Carney is the one who promised Canadians he could 'handle him' and 'win,'' Poilievre said recently. Donald Abelson, a McMaster University expert, argues Poilievre is capitalising on frustration over tariffs but lacks a long-term strategy. 'If Poilievre overplays the Trump card, he's making a mistake,' Abelson told AFP. Boily added that Poilievre's base remains drawn to Trump-era issues like anti-globalism, complicating his traditional conservative stance. Monday's by-election presents another hurdle—a record 214 candidates due to a protest group pushing for electoral reform. Voters must write their preferred candidate's name, an unusual measure to simplify the process amid the crowded ballot. A loss could deepen doubts about Poilievre's leadership, while a win may still leave him battling Trump's lingering shadow. - AFP

Unifor celebrates long-awaited confirmation that Alstom Thunder Bay workers will build new TTC subway trains
THUNDER BAY, ON, Aug. 15, 2025 /CNW/ – Unifor is very pleased to see that all three levels of government have confirmed that Toronto Transit Commission subway trains will be manufactured at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay, securing jobs for workers represented by Unifor Local 1075. 'This is a great victory. Unifor fought long and hard to get the federal, provincial and municipal governments to get on board and support a Made-in-Canada solution,' said Unifor National President Lana Payne. 'We must use our Canadian procurement dollars to support Canadian workers and Canadian-made products, especially given the current trade war.' 'This decision to formally award this contract to Alstom speaks volumes with respect to how we must support Canadian workers, local industries, economies and communities. We need to see more of this if we are to build a more resilient Canadian economy.' In a joint media release today, the governments noted that 'in the face of U.S. tariffs and economic uncertainty, this decision will support Canadian and Ontario workers with good manufacturing jobs and ensure reliable trains for Toronto transit riders.' The Alstom sole-source construction contract means Unifor members will build 70 six-car trains – 55 of those to replace aging infrastructure on Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth) and 15 to be used for the Yonge North and Scarborough Extensions. 'This is the right move to bolster Canada's economy by creating sustainable, good-paying jobs right here in Ontario,' said Unifor Ontario Regional Director Samia Hashi. In January, Ontario committed to spend nearly $500 million to refurbish 181 GO Transit bi-level rail coaches, which is expected to support hundreds of jobs for at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay. 'We are excited and ready to build the subways of the future,' said Unifor Local 1075 President Justin Roberts. 'Reliable, sturdy and resilient – the way today's announcement has contributed to the working lives of our members.' Governments in Canada will spend tens of billions of dollars on transit vehicles in the coming years. In a sector valued at $2.9 billion GDP in recent years, leveraging this procurement to maximize Canadian content means procuring trusted, reliable vehicles that support Canadian jobs. Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
