Chinese tourist drowns in diving mishap in Semporna
KOTA KINABALU: A Chinese couple's diving trip to the beautiful Sipadan Island of Semporna turned ugly when the man drowned in an unfortunate turn of events.
The 37-year-old victim was with his wife and a group of other divers and their guides during to the Monday (May 19) morning accident.
According to Semporna OCPD, Supt Mohd Sabri Zainol, they received a call about the death of a Chinese tourist at around 6.45pm.
'The call was from one of the dive masters, who informed us that he and four other guides had brought with them a total of eight divers of various nationalities to the dive site,' he said in a statement.
At around 10.45am, one of the divers had jumped into the sea without permission from his guide and started sinking, he said.
Supt Sabri said the boatman saw the victim panicking and going underwater, so he informed the crew, prompting an emergency search and rescue there.
The divers searched and found the victim from a depth of about 25m, and was quickly brought to the surface and hauled up the boat, he said, adding emergency resuscitation was performed.
'The victim remained unconscious, was barely breathing and vomited a few times,' he said.
The victim was first taken to the Semporna Hospital for treatment before he was transferred to the Tawau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Supt Sabri.
'We have classified this case as sudden death and a post-mortem will be conducted on Tuesday (May 20) afternoon,' he said.
He urged those with more information to come forward and assist police in their probe.

Meanwhile, ARMYs online have shared their reaction to the news, mostly expressing shock over the situation. Many criticised the woman's action, hoping she'd receive appropriate punishment for attempted trespassing. Siti Kasim berates Malays for excessive racist troll on Anthony Loke because he's a Chinese minister
'WHAT'S wrong with the Malays as they're becoming more racist with each passing day?' Such was the reaction of Siti Kasim to the slew of racist comments hurled at Anthony Loke Siew Fook – including demanding for his resignation as Transport Minister – after 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students perished in a chartered bus crash in the wee hours of Monday (June 9). 'Would the Malays have made similar racist remarks if the Transport Minister were to be a Malay,' the human rights activist and lawyer fumed in a no holds barred tone in her latest YouTube rant. 'So you guys feel right to condemn him just because it happens that the dead are the Malays and he's a Chinese.' 'Use your brain if you want to condemn him … how can you fault the minister for the spate of (heavy vehicle) accidents?' In Siti Kasim's views, most of the crashes involving heavy vehicles are caused by reckless, speeding drivers which is synonymous with express/tour buses (even lorries, trucks and trailers) coupled with poor vehicle maintenance by companies that own the vehicles. 'Are you expecting the minister to also be responsible for the maintenance and service of the vehicles, too?' asked the Orang Asli advocate. 'Be ashamed that your stupid/shallow comments only show that you don't use your brains to think. 'As per the bus driver's own account, if indeed the brake of the bus had malfunctioned moments before the accident, then this means that the ill-fated bus wasn't properly maintained by the company owner who also happens to be Malay.' Editor's Note: The Transport Ministry had on yesterday (June 11) revoked the vehicle permit of the Kulim (Kedah)-based bus operator, Kenari Utara Travel & Tour Sdn Bhd, after it was found that the bus has been loaned to a different individual in Kelantan for RM500 per month. Additionally. the bus owner also failed to provide GPS (Global Positioning System) data report when asked by the authorities because the device was not activated during operation. Moreover, Siti Kasim also pointed to dashcam evidence which shows that the bus was driven at high speed just moments before the accidents (Editor's note: There was also eyewitnesses account that a few passengers had told the driver to slow down during the journey but he refused to heed such request). I can't fathom how all these facts are not bundled together but instead fingers are pointed at Loke in a racist manner? Are you not condemning the driver because he's a Malay (or the company which is Bumiputera-owned)? 'I feel called to comment as the remarks are getting out of hand … I don't wish to defend Loke for I'm not a boot-licker but the comments seem to point to a concerted effort by certain quarters to spark anger within the Malay community. Health issues no barrier to achieving dream career, says teacher
HAVING a hole in his heart has not stopped Amin Mustaqim Mohd Yassin from pursuing his dream of becoming a teacher. Harian Metro reported that Amin Mustaqim was diagnosed at the age of 12 and has sinced lived his life differently from his peers. However, the 25-year-old is now just a step away from becoming a teacher after completing his practical training at SMK Bandar Baru Sultan Sulaiman in Klang, Selangor. 'I have been ill for a long time, and the situation worsened after my late father suffered from a mysterious illness,' he recalled. 'The hardest time was during my studies at the Matriculation College when I couldn't finish my studies, though I only had a month left to go. 'I continued my studies in education because I wanted to become a teacher, as it was my late father's wish,' he said. Amin Mustaqim added that he started working as a trainee teacher last April and taught mathematics to Form Two and Form Four students. 'I never imagined I would reach this level, as I thought it would be tough for me after being diagnosed with the illness.
