Tawau Hospital set to begin cardiology services
Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad, visiting Tawau Hospital today, said the tender for setting up the invasive cardiac laboratory will be issued in a month or two. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Tawau Hospital is set to become a referral hospital on the east coast of Sabah for cardiology treatment soon. Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said this would be possible with the operation of an invasive cardiac laboratory (ICL) there, Bernama reported. He said the entire ecosystem, including the infrastructure for the ICL operations, had been identified and would be supplied immediately. 'The tender will be issued in a month or two. 'The ICL will provide services which are commonly referred to as cardiac treatment setups, angiograms, angioplasties and many more,' he said after visiting the hospital here today. He said at present heart attack and critical heart ailment patients on the east coast of Sabah have to be referred to treatment centres in Kota Kinabalu. This resulted in delayed treatment and an increased risk of complications. 'The health ministry is confident that with the operation of the ICL, we can reduce the time required for door-to-ECG to less than 10 minutes.' Dzulkefly hopes to offer the balloon procedure or angioplasty at the hospital in less than 90 minutes. 'This ICL is a very good, very fast cardiology service that is eagerly awaited by the entire Sabah population, particularly those on the east coast,' he added. Dzulkefly's three-day intensive tour of 22 health facilities in six districts in Sabah ended today.

LDP: Give same urgency to healthcare bullying as Zara
Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party Vice President David Ong has urged the government to treat workplace bullying in healthcare with the same urgency as the fight for justice for 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir. 'We must not let another tragic case be pushed aside,' Ong said, citing a Tawau Hospital doctor who was bullied so severely by senior colleagues that she fell into deep depression and suicidal thoughts. Advertisement 'Her story is a painful reminder that bullying is not just happening in school, it is destroying lives in our hospitals.' Between 2022 and March 2024, 355 bullying complaints were made through the Health Ministry's MyHelp channel. 'Only 10 were investigated, that's 2.8pc while only four were proven just 1.1pc. 'Even in physical assaults, punishment was often just a warning letter. This is not inefficiency, it looks like deliberate neglect," he stressed. He accused the ministry of protecting bullies instead of victims by transferring them or sending them abroad for training while silencing victims. 'Selective justice is corrupted justice. Every one of the 355 cases must be answered for. Every victim deserves justice. Every bully must face the consequences. 'We will not stop until workplace bullying in healthcare is wiped out and those responsible are held accountable whether it's for Zara, for the Tawau doctor, or for any victim of institutional abuse in Malaysia," he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Pulau Sipadan Dive Turns Tragic As Chinese Tourist Drowns
The sea can be a scary place if not treaded appropriately. Other than the lack of oxygen, our movements are stiffened and slow, and the pressure down below may suffocate, leaving a little more than a second for things to go awry. On Monday (19th May 2025), a Chinese tourist watched her husband drown in front of her as he dived into the water off the coast of Pulau Sipadan, Sabah. Reports say that he jumped off the boat without the supervision of the diving instructors. The pair were a part of a group of 8 divers who participated in a diving activity by the resort. Police statements reported that the incident involving the 37-year-old male tourist happened at 10:45 a.m. as he jumped into the water without the supervision of his diving instructor. The victim's body was found unconscious by one of the divers at an estimated depth of 25 metres. A statement from District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Sabri Zainol adds that he was brought back to the boat where the group made attempts to resuscitate him. The tourist showed some response by taking a deep breath and proceeded to vomit, but he remained unconscious afterwards. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead upon his arrival at Tawau Hospital after he was transferred from Semporna Hospital. What started as a fun trip ended in a tragic accident. We send our condolences to the victim's family. Source: New Straits Times Alyssa Gabrielle contributed to this article
