Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, the acclaimed Italian designers known for their iconic contributions to the world of Barbie, tragically lost their lives in a car accident on Sunday, July 27, in Italy. The fatal collision occurred on the A4 Turin–Milan motorway and was reported by Italian news outlet TG24.
According to initial reports, the couple were travelling with their close friend, Amodio Giurn, and his wife, Silvia Moramacro, when their vehicle collided head-on with another car being driven in the wrong direction. The other driver, identified as 82-year-old Egidio Ceriani, was reportedly travelling at a speed of 129 kilometres per hour. The crash claimed the lives of Paglino, Grossi, Giurn, and Ceriani. Moramacro was the sole survivor and has been hospitalised in critical condition.
Paglino and Grossi were reportedly en route to a lake for a day trip when the tragic incident occurred. The crash took place between Novara Est and Marcallo Mesero, in the north-western region of Italy.
More than just professional collaborators, Paglino and Grossi were also romantic partners. In 2006, they made history as the first non-American artists to design a commemorative Barbie doll. Their creative work was often inspired by the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Piet Mondrian, blending high art with the cherished world of collectible dolls.
The post went on to honour the 'spirit and love" of the 'passionate and talented designers and lifelong collectors", noting that they 'turned every creation they touched into a masterpiece" and 'shared an energy that lit up every space they entered."
According to the official Magia2000 website, a doll created by the duo sold for $15,000 at a charity auction in 2015. In 2011, they also founded the Italian Doll Convention, now recognised as the largest fashion doll event in Europe.

South Korean student detained by ICE after routine visa hearing in New York, sparking outcry: Reports

A 20-year-old South Korean student at Purdue University, Yeonsoo Go, has been detained by and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a routine visa hearing in New York, sparking outcry from immigrant rights groups and religious leaders, as per multiple news reports. Go, the daughter of Rev. Kyrie Kim — the first woman ordained in the Seoul Diocese of the Anglican Church of Korea — was taken into ICE custody on July 31 after exiting the New York Immigration Court, where she had appeared for a scheduled visa hearing. The court had granted her a continuance until October, yet ICE agents detained her immediately outside the courthouse. The Episcopal Diocese of New York and several advocacy groups are demanding her immediate release, arguing that Go was legally residing in the US and that immigration authorities acted improperly. According to Go's family, she lawfully entered the US in March 2021 on an R-2 dependent visa, accompanying her mother who had relocated for religious work on an R-1 visa. Her legal stay was reportedly extended in 2023 and remains valid through the end of 2025. However, immigration officials appear to have interpreted her visa status differently, classifying her presence as unlawful. 'She has followed every legal procedure, appeared in court as required, and now finds herself behind bars — this is unacceptable,' said an Episcopal Diocese spokesperson. The case has drawn attention within the Korean-American community and immigrant advocacy circles. Supporters argue that ICE violated due process by detaining someone with a pending and active legal status. Go, a graduate of Scarsdale High School in Westchester County, is currently being held at the ICE detention facility in Manhattan.

‘Cat Meat Tastes Better Than Human': Kerala Man's Grisly Instagram Story Triggers Probe

Last Updated: A video of Shajeer, a lorry driver from Cherpulassery, killing a cat and sharing it on Instagram has sparked outrage in Kerala. Police are investigating and trying to locate him. A disturbing video of a man killing a cat and sharing the footage on Instagram has triggered outrage in Kerala, prompting a police investigation. The accused has been identified as Shajeer, a lorry driver from Cherpulassery in Palakkad district. The video, posted as an Instagram Story from the account 'Shajeer_Tool', first showed the cat being fed. What followed was far more horrifying as another clip showing the cat's head and body parts separated was uploaded. As the footage circulated on social media, users flagged it to the police. Cherpulassery police have launched a probe and are verifying the authenticity of the video. Preliminary findings suggest Shajeer is currently in Tamil Nadu. The police are trying to trace his exact location. According to Kerala Kaumudi, when questioned informally about the act, Shajeer allegedly said, 'Cat meat tastes better than human meat." Authorities are still trying to establish where the video was filmed. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation. Under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, killing or maiming an animal is a punishable offence. The new law, part of the overhaul that replaced the Indian Penal Code, clearly states that anyone who kills, poisons, or renders an animal useless can face up to five years in jail, a fine, or both. The act may also attract charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which lays down additional penalties for causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals. While extreme cases of consuming pets are rare in India, this is not an isolated incident. In Chennai, residents in July 2025 sounded the alarm over a group of youths from the Narikorava community allegedly trapping and killing residential cats for meat, later selling it to roadside eateries as chicken or mutton biryani, according to a report by the Times Of India. Pet owners across areas like Tiruvottiyur and Ambattur complained of missing cats, calling for urgent police action. view comments First Published: August 04, 2025, 22:09 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
