Flood preparedness: Haryana CM Saini issues special instructions for Monsoon season
Saini reviewed preparations for water drainage with Deputy Commissioners from all districts, emphasising the need for complete preparedness to tackle potential flooding issues.
He directed the concerned officials to collect data on pump sets available in the districts and ensure thorough cleaning of drains in all districts, particularly in areas prone to waterlogging like Gurugram, Faridabad, Ambala, and Kurukshetra, added the statement.
The Chief Minister directed officials to verify the functionality of pump sets available with the Public Health Engineering Department and the Irrigation Department to facilitate efficient water drainage.
CM Saini also reviewed the preparations made across the state for water drainage in view of the monsoon. Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, Chief Principal Secretary to CM Rajesh Khullar, Principal Secretary to CM Arun Kumar Gupta, Home Secretary Sumita Mishra, and other senior officials of various departments were present during the meeting.
Saini also ensure prompt redressal of complaints related to water drainage to prevent waterlogging and flooding.
Earlier, on June 29, 2025, and July 1, 2025, Haryana's Ambala and Charkhi Dadri had experienced issues of waterlogging after heavy rainfall, raising concerns about the authorities' preparedness ahead of the Monsoon season.
Notably, several houses and roads have washed away due to a cloudburst and continuous heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh.
At least 51 people have lost their lives and 22 others are missing in Himachal Pradesh as torrential rains, flash floods, and landslides continue to wreak havoc across the state during the ongoing monsoon season, according to the latest official data.
Heavy monsoon rains have triggered widespread devastation in India's Himalayan states, particularly Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The relentless downpours have caused landslides, flash floods, and significant damage to infrastructure and buildings.
In Himachal Pradesh, more than 700 roads and important highways have been closed due to landslides. Additionally, widespread waterlogging has been reported in Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning that heavy rain is expected to persist in the region until the weekend.
India receives 80% of its annual rainfall during the monsoon season, which is crucial for agriculture and the livelihoods of millions of farmers.
However, experts warn that climate change has made monsoon patterns more erratic, leading to increased frequency of flash floods, droughts, and other extreme weather events. (ANI)

After Uttarkashi, Monsoon Fury Hits Kishtwar, Jammu On Alert After Deadly Flash Floods

Situated in the higher reaches, the exact rainfall in the area is still unknown, according to the weather department. 'It is difficult to confirm if it was a cloudburst, as the affected village is situated at a high altitude. We have only two Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in this area, one of which is in Kishtwar town, far from the affected village. Both recorded less than 3 mm of rain on Thursday," said a senior meteorologist from IMD Srinagar. What is a cloudburst? The India Meteorological Department declares a cloudburst when, typically, 100 mm of rain falls over a very small area in a very short time, generally an hour. A similar disaster struck Uttarkashi on August 5, triggering catastrophic flash floods that wiped out much of the high-altitude Dharali village in Uttarakhand. With the rescue operation also hit by rain, the death toll there is still climbing. Jammu remained under a red warning throughout Thursday, with persistent rainfall continuing across various places in the region. As per the latest forecast, rains are expected to continue for another two days at least, with the possibility of intermittent intense showers. Forecasters warn that such intense showers can trigger flash floods and landslides, as the region is highly vulnerable. 'We have issued alerts for all districts in the Jammu division, including Reasi, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, and Ramban," the weather department stated, urging people to stay away from water bodies and river embankments. 46 people killed in massive cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar, rescue operations underway
46 people were killed, and 167 others were rescued from mounds of rubble after a massive cloudburst led to flashfloods in Chositi in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district on Thursday. Flash floods tore through the densely populated foothill hamlet, damaging several homes and even forcing authorities to halt the annual yatra to the Machail Mata shrine. Kishtwar, Aug 14 (ANI): Rescue operations are underway after a flash flood at the Chashoti area following a cloud burst, in Kishtwar on Thursday. (ANI Video Grab) The disaster marks the second major flood-related tragedy in India this month. The cloudburst struck around 12 noon to 1pm. Officials received news of the calamity around 11:30 am, after which SDRF, rescue teams were deployed at the site. Indian Army, Navy, Air Force teams were also activated, said Jammu's Divisional Commissioner. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the situation as 'grim' in an official statement, confirming that a cloudburst was responsible for the flooding. Viral videos of the cloudburst captured torrents of muddy water, silt, and debris racing down the steep slopes, obliterating everything in their path. Houses crumpled like a pack of cards, while boulders crashed down, blocking roads and hampering rescue efforts. The once lush green landscape was left smothered in a bleak brown-grey. Omar Abdullah shared helpline numbers as the death toll from the cloudburst continued to rise. The August 15 'at home' tea party at the CM's residence, and other cultural events in the Union Territory planned for Independence Day, have been cancelled in the light of the tragedy. The formal events - speech, march past, will however, go ahead as planned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences stating that 'every possible assistance will be provided to those in need'. Earlier in the day, Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Lt Gov Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take stock of the situation. If 10 centimetres rainfall is received at a station in one hour, the rain event is termed as cloudburst. This sudden discharge of large amount of water not only leads to human casualties but also loss of property.
