DUI arrest in San Jose crash that killed motorcyclist

A motorcyclist fueling up on a San Jose highway shoulder was killed Saturday by a motorist suspected of driving drunk, the California Highway Patrol said.
The rider had pulled over onto the shoulder of northbound Highway 101 south of the intersection with Interstate 280 just before 2 a.m. to add fuel to the bike, CHP officer Ross Lee said.
The driver of a white Cadillac DeVille was also heading north, veered off the road and onto the shoulder, and crashed into the rider and the bike, the CHP said. The Cadillac driver didn't stop and returned to the roadway, crossed all lanes of traffic and crashed into a concrete divider, officials said.
The motorcyclist died. The Cadillac driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, then to jail.
Officers arrested the motorist on suspicion of drunken driving. The CHP didn't identify the driver or motorcyclist.
The CHP closed all northbound lanes for about 1½ hours to investigate the crash.

Driver killed after flipping car on Highway 680 offramp in Pleasant Hill

A man died after his vehicle crashed and overturned on an off-ramp from northbound Interstate Highway 680 in Pleasant Hill on Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported at 8:14 a.m. on the Monument Boulevard off-ramp from northbound Highway 680. Investigators determined a man was driving a silver Lexus SUV in the slow lane on the highway when he veered right toward the off-ramp, then lost control of the vehicle as it went up an embankment and overturned, CHP officials said. The man was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Authorities determined he was not wearing his seatbelt during the crash. His name was not immediately available. The off-ramp was closed for a little more than two hours following the crash. Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact the CHP's Contra Costa-area office at (925) 646-4980 or 320investigations@

Calaveras County crash leaves car destroyed, driver still able to run away

A car was left almost unrecognizable after a crash Tuesday morning, but authorities say the driver was somehow able to get away. The crash happened just before 7:30 a.m. off of Lake Camanche Parkway in Burson. Exactly what led up to the crash is unclear, but photos from the scene taken by Calaveras Consolidated Fire revealed how the car was nearly obliterated. First responders say the driver was nowhere in sight. "We can't figure out how anyone could have walked away from this accident," Calaveras Consolidated Fire wrote on Facebook. California Highway Patrol also responded to the scene. Officers noted that there have been no walk-ins at any local hospitals believed to be linked to the crash so far, so the driver is still being sought. The crash remains under investigation, CHP noted.

Wild L.A. pursuit: Carjackers steal 3 cars, drive big-rig wrong way on freeway, then escape

Two armed thieves led authorities on a wild pursuit from Lancaster to downtown L.A. on Sunday night, authorities said, stealing three vehicles, driving a big-rig truck in the wrong direction on the 10 Freeway — and still managing to escape. The chase began with a carjacking in the city of Lancaster at 9:45 p.m., according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department. Two armed men stole a man's white F-250 Ford pickup and fired gunshots at the victim as he attempted to pursue them. The carjackers then fled southbound along State Route 14 toward Los Angeles. Sheriff's deputies pursued the pickup for 26 miles, after which the California Highway Patrol took over. The thieves then abandoned the pickup and carjacked a second vehicle, this time a massive big rig, according to the Sheriff's Department. Footage captured by shows the stolen big rig weaving through oncoming traffic as it hurtles in the wrong direction down the westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway. The carjackers ditched the big rig while exiting the 10 near Alameda Street in downtown L.A., authorities said. They then carjacked their third vehicle, a white Chevrolet Silverado truck, and continued to lead the CHP in pursuit. They drove just three miles farther before abandoning the Silverado on Mission Road under the 101 Freeway underpass, where they escaped around two hours after the initial F-250 Ford robbery took place. A loaded firearm was later recovered from the backseat of the F-250 Ford. Authorities believe additional suspects may have participated in the Lancaster robbery and also picked up the fleeing suspects after they got out of the Silverado. Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to contact Det. Casebolt at the Lancaster sheriff's station at (661) 524-2171.
