2 killed in separate weekend crashes on Highway 87 in San Jose

Two fatal crashes along state Highway 87 in San Jose over the weekend are under investigation, the California Highway Patrol said Monday. The first crash happened about 2:15 a.m. Saturday on southbound Highway 87 near Alma Avenue, where a motorcyclist was found unresponsive on the right shoulder of the road. The 33-year-old San Jose man had been ejected from his 2000 Harley Davidson after it rear-ended a 2024 Ford Bronco, Officer Ross Lee said. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released. It's not believed that alcohol or drugs factored in the collision. The second crash happened about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, when two cars were involved in a wreck on northbound Highway 87 south of Taylor Street. The crash happened when a 2020 Mercedes hit the right rear of a 2013 Honda Civic in the number three lane, Lee said. The Honda's driver lost control and the car hit the center concrete wall. After the crash, the Mercedes went off the right-hand side of the road, hit a concrete pillar and caught fire, Lee said. A passenger in the Mercedes was able to escape with minor injuries and was hospitalized. The driver, a 21-year-old Cupertino man, was unable to get out and died at the scene. His name was not released. It is not known whether drugs or alcohol factored in the crash.

DUI arrest in San Jose crash that killed motorcyclist

A motorcyclist fueling up on a San Jose highway shoulder was killed Saturday by a motorist suspected of driving drunk, the California Highway Patrol said. The rider had pulled over onto the shoulder of northbound Highway 101 south of the intersection with Interstate 280 just before 2 a.m. to add fuel to the bike, CHP officer Ross Lee said. The driver of a white Cadillac DeVille was also heading north, veered off the road and onto the shoulder, and crashed into the rider and the bike, the CHP said. The Cadillac driver didn't stop and returned to the roadway, crossed all lanes of traffic and crashed into a concrete divider, officials said. The motorcyclist died. The Cadillac driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, then to jail. Officers arrested the motorist on suspicion of drunken driving. The CHP didn't identify the driver or motorcyclist. The CHP closed all northbound lanes for about 1½ hours to investigate the crash.

25-year-old pregnant driver dies in San Jose crash: CHP

SAN JOSE, Calif. - A 25-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child died Thursday evening in a two-car crash in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol. Two children, about 2 and 5 years old, were also in the car and taken to Valley Medical Center as a precaution, according to CHP Officer Ross Lee. The two children did not appear to be injured. The crash was reported about 7:30 p.m. on southbound Interstate 280 north of Bird Avenue. Lee said that it appears as though the pregnant woman, who was driving a green Honda Civic, crossed all lanes of traffic and crashed into a Ford pickup. In doing so, she was ejected onto the freeway, Lee said. Crews rushed to help her, but she was unresponsive, Lee said. She and her fetus died of their injuries, authorities said. Lee said it is unknown if alcohol or drug use were factors, as the crash is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP San Jose Area Office at (408) 961-0900.
