Hoteliers seek intervention of CM over MERC's revised tariff

The MERC, which is the power regulator, on June 25 issued a revised tariff order superseding its earlier multi-year tariff order issued in March.
Hoteliers raised serious objections to the revised order, terming it 'inconsistent', especially in comparison to the earlier tariff order.
"One of the most regressions is the reversal of the classification of hotels from the 'industrial' to the 'commercial' category, which has been termed unjustified and discriminatory by the hospitality industry.
The MERC in its earlier order appropriately categorised hotels under the Industrial Tariff structure, in line with the government resolution (GR), dated Dec 3, 2020," said Harpreet Singh, president of the Aurangabad Hotels and Restaurants Association.
Sunil Choudhary, the association's secretary, said the revised order has many flaws related to the finalised five-year tariff, a drastic increase in charges, and adverse amendments to time-of-day (ToD) benefits for solar users.
"When state govt granted industry status to hotels with retrospective effect from April 1, 2021, no regulatory body can arbitrarily override or recategorise hotels under the commercial bracket. Falling under the commercial category would force hoteliers to pay double the power tariff," he said.
The Aurangabad Hotels and Restaurants Association urged CM Devendra Fadnavis to intervene and direct MERC and MSEDCL to offer relief to hoteliers.

"The govt must ensure hotels are correctly classified under the industrial tariff category. We also seek transparency and uniform application of policies affecting the hospitality sector, which is a key contributor to employment and tourism in Maharashtra," the association said. Cabinet sub-committee approves Wadala to Gateway metro, Thane to NMIA elevated road
Mumbai: In a big boost for transport infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the state government on Tuesday approved a 16-km underground metro rail connection between Wadala and the Gateway of India and a 25-km elevated road from Thane to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure also approved the procurement of 268 airconditioned rakes for the Mumbai suburban section, the laying of two additional railway lines between Lonavala and Pune and the construction of a ring road and a new township in Nagpur. Cabinet sub-committee approves Wadala to Gateway metro, Thane to NMIA elevated road 'These decisions will provide a modern transportation system and a new direction and momentum for development of cities like Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Nagpur,' said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who chaired the cabinet sub-committee meeting, with deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and chief secretary Rajesh Kumar in attendance. This 16-km, fully underground metro corridor, called Metro 11, will be constructed at a cost of approximately ₹24,000 crore, with funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It would be the second fully underground metro corridor in Mumbai after the Colaba-Seepz corridor. 'The new metro line will connect south Mumbai with the eastern suburbs. It will include a metro car depot at the Anik-Pratiksha Nagar BEST bus depot and BEST will earn some additional revenue as a commercial complex will also be built at the site under a joint agreement,' said an official aware of the matter, requesting anonymity.. The 25-km Thane to NMIA elevated road will be built by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) at a cost of ₹6,430 crore. It will provide direct connectivity between Thane and the new airport, bypassing traffic on the Eastern Express Highway and the Thane Belapur Road, and reducing the travel time from 1.5 hours to 30 minutes. 'The six-lane elevated toll road will have six interchanges and a speed limit of 100 km/hr. We will need six months to secure necessary permissions and three years thereafter to complete the project. We will try to complete it before time,' Vijay Singhal, managing director, CIDCO told Hindustan Times. The procurement of 268 airconditioned rakes for the Mumbai suburban section will be done under phases 3 and 3A of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). Old rakes with open doors will be phased out gradually and replaced by the new rakes. 'Though these trains are more comfortable, there will be no change in ticket prices. Purchase of new trains will start after approval from the central government.' Fadnavis was quoted saying during the meeting. The third and fourth railway lines on the Pune-Lonavala suburban route are expected to boost industrial, residential and commercial development in the area. Two new stations under phase one of the Pune metro, Balajinagar-Bibwewadi and Swargate-Katraj, were also approved by the sub-committee on Tuesday.

Vashi bus depot remains unused for a year, leaving commuters inconvenienced
Navi Mumbai: Commuters are expressing frustration as Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has not opened the Rs 190-crore bus depot despite its completion a year ago. The existing Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) bus depot at Sector 9-A, Vashi, was shut down in October 2019 for the construction of a terminal, forcing commuters to queue on main roads for buses in heavy rain and scorching sun. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Under mounting pressure, the civic administration is considering opening the facility before the Ganesh festival. A citizens' forum called Human Chain has written to the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking his intervention. "It is a matter of shame for Navi Mumbai, touted as the city of the 21st Century, that the taxpayers are made to wait on the roadside without any shelter," said Human Chain Convenor B N Kumar, questioning when the commuters will get freedom from these worries. Civic authorities earlier announced that the Vashi bus facility would be inaugurated on Republic Day in 2023, but NMMT missed all subsequent deadlines. NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde said that he has sought the Chief Minister's slot to inaugurate the terminal. "Though the contract is being finalised for leasing out the entire complex, we will at least open the bus depot for the commuters well before the Ganesh festival so that the devotees heading towards their native places can board the buses from the depot." Airoli MLA and Forest Minister Ganesh Naik previously stated that the depot would open by the monsoon. NMMC has invested over Rs 190 crore from taxpayers' funds in constructing the 21-floor bus depot-cum-commercial complex. However, residents highlighted the issue of the massive structure remaining unused. "It is a criminal waste of money that the building is not netting any gains to NMMT," Kumar said. He added that the civic body could have earned Rs 14.25 crore a year even at a savings bank interest rate of 7.5%. Kumar has long questioned the decision to launch the 21-storeyed complex amid a glut in office spaces in the city. Two major malls on Palm Beach Road have been converted into shopping-cum-office complexes. Vashi-based homemaker Vibha Syunry pointed out that the bus depot, equipped with shaded stands for different routes, is much more convenient for people than the current confusing system that forces them to wait in dust, rain, or sun. "This is commonsense which does not seem to work," she said. Civic rights activist Madhu Shankar wondered what local political leaders, both former and aspiring corporators, are doing about the depot facility. "Sadly, the people are left to fend for themselves," she lamented. Senior citizens, women, and children are compelled to rush for buses amidst utter confusion, said real estate consultant Naresh Shah. Commuters said that the bunching of buses also creates traffic snarls between Shivaji Chowk and the fire brigade signal.
