Orlando Pirates news: Saleng, Mofokeng, Moremi, Martin
Orlando Pirates have an eventful few months before the 2025/26 campaign ignites.
The upcoming offseason window could make the difference in achieving league and Champions League glory; it's a time when not only are they on the hunt for stars, but they're also looking for Jose Riveiro's successor.
The latter will be hard to replace, someone who revolutionised the club through his youthful approach, winning five trophies in three years. However, it shouldn't insinuate that finding a suitable candidate can't be done.
Former AmaZulu FC coach Pablo Franco Martin is the latest name to be linked with the Orlando Pirates.
'There have been talks between Pablo Franco Martin and Orlando Pirates,' an inside source revealed.
'An offer has been made but he is not the only coach the club is looking at and there are other candidates. He is very interested in the Pirates job, and he has since parted ways with the club he was coaching in Saudi Arabia despite being made an offer to increase his salary to renew his contract.'
Tshepang Moremi is one of the most sought after players in the league. The uSuthu star has Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates vying for his services.
Meanwhile, youngster Relebohile Mofokeng has several foreign suitors trying to lure him – offers are expected throughout the winter window. Egyptian giants Zamelek FC had a R25.8 million bid rejected earlier this year.
Forgotten winger Monnapule Saleng appears to be nearing an exit following a near six-month hiatus, however, no clubs are yet to show interest. Orlando Pirates seem to have given up on the Bloemhof-born star

On Wednesday, Chiefs confirmed that they had parted ways with the forward after ansuccessful season in front of goal. The Limpopo-born forward joined Amakhosi during the 2022/23 campaign, and much was expected from the man described by former Chiefs midfielder Fees Moloi as having a 'style similar to Erling Haaland', according to KickOff. Moloi, with all due respect, couldn't be more wrong. Haaland is the deadliest striker in world football and has found the back of the net a staggering 276 times in 342 senior club games. When Haaland takes to the field, his teammates expect him to deliver every single time. To be mentioned in the same sentence as the Norwegian, a player needs to have similar stats when it comes to goal Chivaviro does not. He doesn't even come close. Chivaviro was brought to Chiefs to score goals. In the season before moving to Naturena, he scored 17 goals in all competitions for Marumo Gallants. That tally was impressive, and Kaizer Chiefs fans were excited when he was signed. They expected goals. Lots of them. Unfortunately, they didn't get that. In his first season, he found the back of the net just four times. And in the season that just ended, he scored five goals. He was brought to Chiefs to score goals, and in two seasons, he found the back of the net just nine times. That's just not good enough, and whoever did his scouting report failed to mention that his 17-goal season for Gallants was a rare anomaly. For a team wanting to return to the glory days, Chivaviro was the wrong man from the start. To win football games, you need strikers who score goals. Chiefs know this. In the past, they had the likes of Fani Madida, Marks Maponyane, Pollen Ndlanya, and Colins Mbesuma. Even sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr knew how to put the ball in the back of the net in his day. If the club want to be back among the big guns of South African football, they need to do better in terms of recruitment. The next player they bring in needs to have a proven pedigree of scoring goals. Otherwise, they'll find themselves with a player who doesn't hit double figures in two full seasons. Kaizer Chiefs can no longer afford to gamble on strikers who might deliver. If the club are serious about reclaiming their status as a South African football powerhouse, they must adopt a ruthless, results-driven approach to recruitment. The next striker signing must arrive not with comparisons to global superstars, but with cold, hard numbers – and a track record to back them up. Basadien and Sibisi will captain young Bafana in friendlies
Stellenbosch FC fullback Fawaaz Basadien and Orlando Pirates centreback Nkosinathi Sibisi will share the captaincy duties for Bafana Bafana in their friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique. South Africa meet Tanzania at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday, then Mozambique at the same venue on Tuesday (both 7.30pm). Broos announced on Thursday Basadien will wear the armband in the first of those games and Sibisi in the second. The coach explained earlier this week why he thought Sibisi has such strong leadership qualities for his Bafana squad that boasts many new faces. There are no Mamelodi Sundowns players in the squad as they have earned a few days' rest from their Caf Champions League second leg (3-2 aggregate) defeat against Pyramids FC in Cairo on Sunday and begin preparations for the Fifa Club World Cup that starts in the US on June 14. Broos has used that as an opportunity to include some of the bright young emerging stars from the Pirates who also reached the semifinals of the Champions League and a host of other new faces as the coach casts his net wide for more talent and depth. With Sundowns goalkeeper and Bafana captain Ronwen Williams not in Polokwane, Broos has picked Sibisi — a long-time member of his squad — as one of the players take the armband, a smart move given his familiarity with the nine Buccaneers players in the squad. 'It was a little bit of searching but I think with Sibisi we have a good captain,' the Belgian said. 'He is an experienced player who has been with Bafana Bafana since I have been here, from the first game. '[It was about] his experience as an older player, he is a guy who has the respect of everybody so I think he's a good one to replace Ronwen.' Among these are talented young striker or midfielder Simphiwe Selepe, 20, winger Mohau Nkota, 20, and centreback Mbekezeli Mbokazi, 19. Bucs, though, more than the other side represented in the Bafana squad, played a lot of matches in 2023-24. Broos was asked if he is concerned about fatigue from his Pirates contingent. 'At the end of the season all the players [from all the clubs] had a very difficult season with many games. Some players more than others and when you take the Pirates players, there are nine in my squad. 'But they are professionals. And I [believe] that players are always very happy to come [to Bafana camps]. And when you are happy and motivated then you forget the fatigue. 'But I can understand it and we will take that fatigue into account when we train.' Other new faces in Broos's squad Pirates' in-form right-back Deano van Rooyen, Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner and Samukelo Kabini, a 21-year-old left-back playing for Molde FK in Norway. More players he can run the rule over are TS Galaxy defender Khulumani Ndamane, Polokwane City midfielder Ndamulelo Maphangule, AmaZulu attacker Tshepang Moremi and Richards Bay forward Yanela Mbuthuma. Among fringe national players who could do with game time are goalkeepers Ricardo Goss and Sipho Chaine, Nyiko Mobbie, Thabo Moloisane, Fawaaz Basadien, Luke le Roux, Oswin Appollis, Sinoxolo Kwayiba and Patrick Maswanganyi. Broos has said he will try to give all 23 players a run in the two friendlies.

How could uncapped players fit into Springbok squad?
The first Springbok training squad of the season, which was confirmed on Thursday by SA Rugby, includes 31 Rugby World Cup players and nine uncapped players in a group of 54. Those nine players in the group are Marnus van der Merwe, Neethling Fouche, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Cobus Wiese, Renzo du Plessis, Vincent Tshituka, Juarno Augustus, Ethan Hooker and Ntokozo Makhaza. Although this squad will be trimmed closer to the start of the Test season, it is worth considering how these uncapped players could fit into the Springbok team, and what has brought them into the national picture. Ethan Hooker: The versatile Sharks back, who can play at wing or centre, has been loudly knocking on the Springbok door this season. He is surely set for a Test debut sooner rather than later, likely to be on the right wing as someone who can afford Cheslin Kolbe some rest when needed. Juarno Augustus: A standout player for the Northampton Saints this past season, Augustus now has experience on his side, and could provide a very good option at No 8 considering the injuries to other players in this position. Vincent Tshituka: The Congolese-born Tshituka will add some much-needed depth at blindside flank, and it would not be a surprise at all to see him make his debut against Italy or Georgia in July. Ntokozo Makhaza: The Varsity Cup superstar was a bit of a bolter in the squad selection, and it will be interesting to see whether the talented wing has shown enough to tempt the Springbok coaches into offering him an international cap this July. Renzo du Plessis: Another rising star in South African rugby, the dynamic loose forward is in the mould of Kwagga Smith. A debut against Georgia would certainly seem feasible. Neethling Fouche: The Stormers powerhouse prop will add important back up at tighthead, and considering Frans Malherbe is still sidelined with injury, Fouche is due for his first Test cap. Asenathi Ntlabakanye: A 145kg giant, his physical dimensions set him apart from the pack, and perhaps the one-off games against the Barbarians and Georgia will present an opportunity for the big tighthead prop to get a Springbok game under the belt. Marnus van der Merwe: Another position where the Springboks need to build depth is at hooker, and Van der Merwe is deserving of consideration after impressing for Welsh club Scarlets. When Malcolm Marx or Bongi Mbonambi are in need of a rest, the baton should be passed to Van der Merwe Cobus Wiese: With the ability to play at lock and loose forward, the 27-year-old boasts all the physical attributes to make an impact for the Springboks in some of the Tests this season when experimental selection is likely to come into consideration.
