Pakstan coach Mike Hesson has hinted that
Babar Azam
's path back into the national T20I side could run through Australia's Big Bash League later this year. The 30-year-old has been sidelined from the shortest format since late 2024, with selectors leaving him out of both the upcoming tri-series against UAE and Afghanistan and next month's

.'Perform in BBL': PAK coach Mike Hesson explains how Babar Azam can return to T20I squad after Asia Cup snub
Hesson made it clear that while Babar remains a top-quality player, he needs to show progress in specific areas before reclaiming his spot.
'There is no doubt Babar's been asked to improve in some areas around taking on spin and in terms of his strike rate. Those are things he is working really hard on,' the coach said as quoted by the ICC.

Babar's recent form has been inconsistent. He struck 47 in the first ODI against West Indies in Trinidad but followed it with scores of 0 and 9. His T20 record last year, of 738 runs in 24 matches at strike rates of 129.22 and 133.21, invited criticism for not being quick enough in a format where acceleration is crucial.
Hesson suggested that Babar's best chance to make a statement will come in December and January, when he is expected to feature in the BBL. 'A player like Babar has an opportunity to play in the BBL and show he is improving in those areas in T20s. He is too good a player not to consider,' Hesson said.
The coach also explained why others had been preferred in the current squad. 'At the moment the players we have, have done exceptionally well.
Sahibzada Farhan has played six games (against Bangladesh and West Indies) and won three Player of the Match awards,' he pointed out.
Mohammad Rizwan's exclusion was another notable call, with selectors opting to back batters who consistently score at a high strike rate.

What do you believe is the main reason for Babar Azam's exclusion from the T20I side?
Inconsistent performance
Other players performing better
Hesson stressed the importance of rewarding recent form. 'We need a run rate that puts us ahead of the game. T20 is all about setting the game up and being ahead of the game all the time,' he said.

Chetan Sharma backs Bumrah, urges players to follow physios' guidance

Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah may have drawn criticism for playing only three Tests during the series against England to manage his workload, but former BCCI chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma has backed the bowler, saying players should go by the physios' advice as they are the "better judges". The injury-prone Bumrah played the first, third and fourth Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar five-match series, skipping two matches with Mohammed Siraj leading the pace-bowling attack. Sharma, himself a former pace bowler, said it was akin to a patient having to follow the doctor's advice. "If the medical team advises, if the doctor tells me that I have to take antibiotics, then I have to consume them. "If our physios is telling a player to manage workload, I think we should listen to them because they are the better judges," said Sharma on the sidelines of the country's public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati signing a deal with London-based cricket analytics company CricViz on Monday for the telecast of 104 episodes of "The Great Indian Cricket Show" on Doordarshan. Sharma, who forged a potent partnership with Kapil Dev for nearly half-a-decade and went on to take more than 125 wickets in Tests and ODIs before becoming the chairman of selectors, added that the team's performance in the England Test series gave him confidence that it will win the Asia Cup, which begins in the UAE next month. "I know that whoever is selected will be the best for the country. And the kind of cricket we are playing right now, I'm really proud with the way India played in England. "And I'm very confident that we are definitely going to win the Asia Cup (to be played in T20 format) because soon after that we are playing the T20 World Cup (in 2026) in India. "It's a very big thing when you are playing (the World Cup) in you own backyard. If the intent is right, the results will also be good," said Sharma after the event, which also had the likes of Madan Lal, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning side, and former India players Murali Kartik and Aakash Chopra and Prasar Bharati Chairman Navneet Kumar Sehgal. On whether Test skipper Shubman Gill, who smashed four centuries during the drawn Test series against England recently, should be included in the Asia Cup side to be led by charismatic batter Syuryakumar Yadav, Sharma said, India should select its best possible 15-member squad for the continental showpiece. "Look, that is up to the selectors what they see. My opinion does not matter because I am no longer the chairman (of selectors), so I will only say that the best possible team should be selected. "We have such good cricketers that not just the top-15 but even if the top-30 are selected, they are all very good. Really proud of them," he added.

Babar & Rizwan Told To Follow Kohli's Path And Quit International Cricket If...

Last Updated: Babar and Rizwan on Sunday were ignored by PCB selectors for a place in Pakistan's T20I squad for the 2025 edition of the Asia Cup. Former Pakistani captains Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan on Sunday (August 17) were ignored by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selectors for a place in Men in Green's Asia Cup 2025 squad. The PCB's decision to leave out Babar and Rizwan, who are the top two run-getters for Pakistan in the shortest format of the game, came as a shock for cricket fans around the world. After PCB's decision sent shockwaves around the world, former Pakistani fast bowler Tanveer Ahmed made a bold statement. He suggested Babar and Rizwan to quit international cricket. According to him, Babar and Rizwan should follow the 'Virat Kohli' path and retire from international cricket if 'respect matters". ' Meri Babar Azam aur Rizwan say request hai ager ap log yeh samajhtey hain ap logon ke izzat nahi ha tou retirement ley lo international cricket say humarey samne virat kohli ke examples hain. @babarazam258, @iMRizwanPak izzat apney hath main ha (My request to Babar Azam and Rizwan is that if you feel your respect is not intact, then consider retiring from international cricket. We have examples of Virat Kohli in front of us. Babar and Rizwan, respect is in your hands)," he tweeted. 'They are not match winners.' 'Calling them (Babar and Rizwan) key players would be wrong and unfair. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are not Pakistan cricket's key players at the moment. Key players are those who win matches for Pakistan," Hafeez said on his YouTube channel. 'If we look at the past year and a half to two years, the players showing consistent performance are Salman Ali Agha, Saim Ayub and Hasan Nawaz. Why aren't we talking about them? They are the current players winning matches for Pakistan," he added. Hafeez feels Babar and Rizwan need to prove themselves as good players. 'I think Babar and Rizwan need to be concerned about their positions in the team. They need to prove themselves as good players first; key players come later. Both were good in the past, but now they are not delivering results," he remarked. 'Both need to be fully involved in the game; otherwise, results won't come. The same goes for Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi; they are also not giving match-winning performances for Pakistan," he added. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Asia Cup: ‘If I were chairman, I'd have him in the squad…' – Srikkanth on teen sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi

There has been a lot of conversation around what India's batting lineup should look like with the BCCI set to announce the team for the upcoming Asia Cup on Tuesday. With the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Sai Sudarshan, Tilak Verma and Abhishek Sharma having a fine IPL season this year, they are expected to feature in the 15-member squad. This year's IPL saw 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi scoring the second fastest century in the tournament's history with a 35-ball ton against Gujarat Titans for Rajasthan Royals. The youngster also had an impressive tour with India Youth team in England, where he amassed 335 runs in five Youth ODI's including fastest Youth ODI hundred apart from scoring a half-century in Youth Test series against England. Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth has urged the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to pick the youngster for the Asia Cup and have in the 'You have to play boldly. Don't make him wait. Don't say things like let him mature. He is already playing with remarkable maturity. His shot-making has been on another level. If I were chairman, I would definitely have him in the 16,' Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. Indian have won the Asia Cup eight times in their history with the last Asia Cup win coming in the 2023 edition of the tournament. With this year's Asia Cup being played in T20 format, the main focus of the selection committee would be to pick a team, which can win the tournament in this format. The last time India won the Asia Cup played in a T20 format was in 2016, when the Indian team scored an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh in the final. Srikkanth also said that he does not believe that Sanju Samson will be in the team and that he sees Abhishek Sharma as certain for the opener's role in the Indian squad. 'Samson is doubtful, according to me. My first-choice opener is Abhishek Sharma, no doubt. I will have two more openers. My picks would be Vaibhav Suryavanshi or Sai Sudharsan, with Shubman Gill as an option. If I were a selector, I would keep Vaibhav in the 15 for the T20 World Cup,' added Srikkanth. Earlier, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra had spoken about Tilak Verma being preferred over Sheryas Iyer in the final XI in Asia Cup. While Iyer led Punjab kings to the IPL final this year and had scored 604 runs, Verma had scored 343 runs in 16 matches. In t20Is, Verma has scored a total of 749 runs in 25 matches at an average of 49.93. Chopra talked about how Verma has been in fine form as a number 3 for the Indian T20I team in recent years. 'We have built a case that Shreyas' name should be there, but the truth is that Tilak Varma is playing either at No. 3 or No. 4. Since he has started playing at No. 3, he has been unstoppable. Since he bats lower down the order in the IPL, it's an apple vs orange comparison. If you see his numbers, you feel the guy hasn't done anything wrong. He also allows us one more thing. You can maintain a left-right combination. Will you drop Tilak Varma from the XI because I believe Shreyas Iyer's best place to bat is either No. 3 or No. 4? If he goes to No. 5, I think it will be a little too low in T20 cricket, and Surya is at No. 4,' Chopra had said on his Youtube channel.
