Selangor MB clarifies Putra Heights gas explosion not caused by excavation
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stated that investigations by authorities confirmed no link between groundworks and the incident.
Amirudin clarified that the monsoon drain construction and residential development in the area occurred between 2008 and 2009, predating the establishment of the One-Stop Centre in 2010. He dismissed claims of unauthorised construction near Petronas Gas Berhad's reserve, confirming the developer had obtained formal approval and adhered to safety conditions.
Addressing allegations of insufficient buffer zone compliance, he noted that while Petronas requires a 60-foot buffer, the approved zone in Putra Heights was 66 feet. The explosion was attributed to weak soil conditions beneath the pipeline, as revealed by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH).
Repair and reconstruction efforts for affected homes are progressing ahead of schedule. In Taman Putra Harmoni, three houses will be rebuilt, 46 repaired, and another 46 under structural review. Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru will see 11 homes rebuilt and six repaired. Residents have until October 27 to submit claims, with the Subang Jaya City Council facilitating the process.
Amirudin also proposed increasing the repair cost ceiling from RM30,000 to RM60,000 to cover roofing and fittings. - Bernama

ACCIM calls for enhanced tax incentives to boost Malaysian exports
PETALING JAYA: While praising the government's efforts to lower tariffs, the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCIM) urged for increased tax incentives and grants to support exporters and businesses. At the same time, he also agrees to explore further government support for businesses, particularly those in small and medium enterprises, to adapt to the new baseline tariff rate. Its minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, said they would continue to work closely with stakeholders to maximise the opportunities from this development, including the strong momentum in approved investments, driven by ongoing infrastructure projects, a consistent realisation rate of over 85% for approved investments, as well as catalytic national development initiatives, in a statement on Friday. MASA unveils third policy development cohort to boost Bumiputera empowerment
PETALING JAYA: Institut Masa Depan Malaysia (MASA) is ensuring that research findings are turned into practical solutions to address the country's strategic challenges through its MASA Policy Development Programme Cohort-3 (MPDP 3.0). In a statement today, its CEO Azril Mohd Amin said MASA is continuing its efforts as a leading policy research institute by driving high-impact studies to support the nation's socioeconomic development. 'Through the MASA Policy Development Programme Cohort-3 (MPDP 3.0), we aim to ensure that research findings are translated into practical solutions to address Malaysia's strategic challenges,' he said. Launched as a continuation of the initiative introduced in September 2021, MPDP 3.0 builds on the success of MPDP 1.0 and 2.0, which together produced 57 policy papers tackling key issues related to national economic recovery and development. Azril said the programme has generated research on multidimensional poverty, B40 education, sustainable urban planning for low-income communities, regional inclusivity in Sabah and Sarawak, MSME social enterprise models, the green economy, and food security. 'Other areas of focus include ecotourism empowerment, climate change, crisis resilience, health preparedness, affordable housing, and social protection.' This year, 16 research proposals were selected from 145 submissions by researchers from 26 public and private universities nationwide. Each project will receive a grant of up to RM10,000 to enhance existing policies and provide check-and-balance mechanisms for effective implementation. Azril added that with the theme 'Bumiputera Empowerment and Shared Prosperity,' MPDP 3.0 supports the goals of the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 and the Bumiputera Socioeconomic Report, reflecting MASA's commitment to advancing national development through evidence-based research.
