MiG-21, Indian Air Force's Workhorse, To Be Phased Out In September

NDTV7 days ago
New Delhi:
The MiG-21 - that redoubtable warhorse of the Indian Air Force - will be phased out of active service by September, to be replaced by the newer and nimbler Tejas Mk1A fighter jets.
The IAF has 36 MiG-21 planes left in its arsenal, a far cry from the nearly 900 - of which around 660 were built in India - that so successfully protected the nation's skies and territories.
The MiG-21 first entered service in 1963, on a trial basis. The Russian-made jet went on to form the backbone of the Air Force till the mid-2000s, when the Sukhoi Su-30MKIs were brought in.
The final variant to serve India - the ones which will now be phased out - was the Bison, which featured upgraded electronics and better navigation and communications systems.
In October 2023, MiG-21 fighter aircraft from the No 4 squadron flew for one last time over the town of Barmer in Rajasthan, a 'farewell and thank you for the memories' moment it shared with the planes taking up its role in the state that borders Pakistan, the also Russian-made Sukhoi.

"We will stop flying the MiG-21 fighter aircraft by 2025 and will replace them with the LCA Mark-1A," then-Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari had said then.
In July 2022 the Air Force had confirmed a three-year timeline to phase out the four remaining MiG-21 squadrons still in service. The plan also involves phasing out the MiG-29s by 2027.
The phasing out of the MiG-21 fleet comes after numerous crashes involving the aging plane, including an incident in Rajasthan in May 2023 in which the three villagers were killed.
The MiG-21 in question took off from the Suratgarh Air Force base for a routine exercise when it crashed near Bahlol Nagar in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh after a 'technical snag'.
The Air Force grounded the entire MiG-21 fleet after that accident.
Among the earlier squadrons to have been phased out was the Srinagar-based No 51, which took part in Operation Safed Sagar during the Kargil war. It also repulsed Pakistan's retaliatory action in February 2019, a day after airstrikes in Balakot targeted terrorist camps in Pak.
Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, now a Group Captain, who shot down a Pak jet in aerial combat before he was forced down too and was captured, was from that squadron.
Meanwhile, India is also developing a fifth-generation stealth fighter that will vault the country into an elite club - one of only three other countries with such advanced fighter aircraft.
NDTV Explains |
The multirole Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft will be a single-seat, twin-engine jet with advanced stealth coatings and internal weapons bays, and the plane - most of which will made in-house, at Bengaluru's Aeronautical Development Agency - will cost over Rs 15,000 crore.

Deleted, not denied: The truth behind Kanthapuram's claim on Nimisha Priya's reprieve

A curious development unfolded on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) morning about the reported commutation of Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya's death sentence in Yemen. An ANI tweet about the reprieve, shared by Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar on X, disappeared from his social media handle. On Monday night, Mr. Aboobacker Musliar had announced that Yemeni authorities had waived the death sentence following a series of discussions involving scholars appointed by senior Yemeni Sufi scholar Sheikh Habib Omer bin Hafiz, Northern Yemen representatives and international diplomats. The news had been widely reported by media outlets, including ANI, which Mr. Aboobacker Musliar had shared on his X handle. However, when ANI deleted the original tweet, it automatically disappeared from Mr. Aboobacker Musliar's X handle, leading to confusions and speculations about Nimisha Priya's fate. Kanthapuram maintains stance Mr. Aboobacker Musliar maintained on Tuesday that the Yemeni authorities had indeed decided to revoke the death sentence handed to Nimisha Priya, accused of murdering Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2017. According to sources close to Mr. Aboobacker Musliar, the next step is negotiating with Talal Abdo Mahdi's family to determine Nimisha Priya's sentence – either life imprisonment or release upon payment of blood money. Mr. Aboobacker Musliar's claim about waiving of Nimisha Priya's execution was confirmed on Monday night by Sarhan Shamsan Al Wiswabi, a Yemeni activist and spokesperson for the Action Council for Talal Mahdi's Justice in Yemen, through a Facebook post. Mr. Wiswabi said in his post that due to the strong intervention of religious scholars, the death sentence was waived. He said it would now be either life imprisonment or release on payment of blood money. Her planned July 16 execution was earlier deferred following multiple interventions. The Centre claimed it had intervened, while Mr. Aboobacker Musliar had claimed he did so through his close association with revered Yemeni Sufi scholar Sheikh Habib Omer bin Hafiz. Mr. Aboobacker Musliar's intervention, however, sparked a controversy. Several individuals and groups tried to claim credit for the reprieve, while others criticised him for his involvement. Some Keralites opposing Mr. Aboobacker Musliyar's efforts went further, expressing sympathy for Talal Abdo Mahdi's family on Facebook. They urged Abdul Fatah Mahdi, the victim's brother, to reject any potential pardon for Nimisha Priya and instead advocated for her capital punishment, adding complexity to the situation.

Amit Shah's "Proof" Jab At P Chidambaram Over "Homegrown Terrorists" Remark

New Delhi: Home Minister Amit Shah hit out at the Congress' P Chidambaram Tuesday for his suggestion the terrorists behind the Pahalgam attack - in which 26 people were killed - were "homegrown", and his demand for proof that they were from Pakistan, as the government has repeatedly said. In Parliament this morning, Mr Shah criticised the opposition leader for trying to 'save Pakistan' and declared, "When he says this, it means they (the Congress) is giving a clean chit (to Pak). The Home Minister, in a typically combative speech, also said, "I thought the opposition would be happy to know the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack are dead... but it seems they are upset..." Amit Shah began his address by confirming the three men shot dead by a joint operation between Jammu and Kashmir Police and the military Monday evening took part in the Pahalgam terror attack. "But yesterday, former Home Minister Chidambaram ji raised the question - what is the proof that the terrorists came from Pakistan? I want to ask him what he will get by saving Pakistan. When he says this, it means they are giving a clean chit to Pakistan..." he continued. Mr Shah then laid offered the House details of yesterday's operation, including the discovery of Pak-made chocolates in the pockets of the terrorists who were shot down. He also said ballistics on assault rifles recovered confirmed their use in Pahalgam. Buoyed by cheers from BJP MPs, Mr Shah repeated his 'clean chit' attack at Mr Chidambaram and the Congress and said they had lost the authority to question the government. Amit Shah Fires At Congress "The opposition seems upset terrorists were killed..." the Home Minister shouted angrily, "The opposition sees only the religion of the terrorists. Do they (the opposition) speak to Pak?" "Civilians were killed in front of their families by (terrorists) who asked their religion. I condemn this barbaric act. I express my sympathies to the families who lost their loved ones," he said. Mr Shah also criticised the Congress-led federal governments for failing to respond with military force to terror attacks during its time in power. "Between 2005 and 11, there were 27 terrorists attacks. What did Congress governmenst do? They just sent dossiers to Pakistan..."
