Google previews Samsung DeX-like desktop mode for Android at I/O: Details
A demo during the Google I/O event showed a new layout that appears a lot like Samsung DeX. Apps such as Gmail, Chrome, YouTube, and Google Photos appeared in a taskbar at the bottom of the screen. The time was displayed at the top-left corner, while the Wi-Fi and battery icons were on the top-right.
Google's new desktop mode will be part of Android 16. One of the key features is adaptive apps. These apps can resize and move around the screen just like on a computer. That means users will be able to drag, drop, and arrange apps any way they like. Google said that they are making API changes to Android 16 that would no longer react to orientation, resizability and aspect ratio restriction, giving users a more responsive user interface by default.
Google also posted more information on its blog, saying that Android 16 will focus on making apps work better across many different devices. This includes not just phones, but also tablets, foldables, Chromebooks, cars, and even mixed reality wearables. With this update, Google is showing that Android is growing beyond phones.
Google's desktop mode feature is expected to be rolled out with Android 16 later this year.
What is Samsung DeX?
DeX, which stands for "Desktop eXperience," allows Galaxy smartphone users to mirror their phone's screen on a Windows PC. Launched in 2017, Samsung DeX also offers a desktop-like interface when the smartphone is connected to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Meta will begin allowing candidates to use artificial intelligence during coding tests. The company has also asked existing employees to volunteer for a 'mock AI-enabled interview,' as first reported by 404 Media and later confirmed by Meta. The Silicon Valley heavyweight is among a handful of tech companies that have given the green light to candidates to use AI when applying for jobs. This makes LLM-based cheating less effective, and with that, Meta is signaling support for 'vibe coding,' which could become part of the company's engineering workflow going forward. 'Vibe coding,' as the name suggests, involves using fast-evolving AI chatbots and other artificial intelligence tools to write software programs. Traditionally, learning to code has been a prerequisite for landing a job at a tech company. However, since the concept of vibe coding was introduced, it has enabled anyone to prototype a product, write code, and bring that product to market at lightning speed. This shift could change the software engineering field and open the door for individuals who never learned to code or attended engineering school but have new product ideas. AI-powered coding tools have surged in popularity in recent months. Startups like Lovable and Cursor have suddenly gained attention, with investors pouring millions into these companies. These tools lower the entry barrier to software development, and tech companies are taking notice. Consider designers: instead of relying on software engineers, they can now experiment and bring ideas to life on their own using AI coding tools. It's currently available in the US through Google Labs, the company's platform for testing experimental features. Opal allows users to build, edit, and share mini-apps using natural language. All you have to do is enter a description of the app you want to create, and the tool will use different Google models to generate it. Once the app is ready, you can navigate to an editor panel to view the visual workflow of inputs, outputs, and generation steps. Google's proposed remedies in CCI antitrust case could bring more real-money gaming apps to Play Store
Google has proposed opening up Play Store in India to a larger number of real-money gaming (RMG) apps in response to an ongoing antitrust probe by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) related to the tech giant's alleged abuse of dominance in the RMG ecosystem. The broader Play Store access is part of a set of proposed remedies submitted by Google to CCI, according to a notice issued by the competition watchdog inviting public comments on the 'commitment offer'. The antitrust case stems from a complaint filed by Delhi-based online gaming platform Winzo in November last year. As part of its list of proposed fixes aimed at levelling the competitive field, Google said it would allow all real-money gaming apps to be distributed to users in India via Play Store, provided they are 'self-declared by developers as permissible online real-money games as per applicable laws/jurisprudence.' The company also indicated that it may update its advertising policies to allow ads for 'games of skill' in India as long as developers furnish proof showing that they are not 'games of chance' or gambling apps. The deadline for providing feedback on Google's proposed remedies is August 20, 2025. If approved by the CCI, these remedies would not only let developers of real-money gaming apps reach more Android users but also enable Google to earn more revenue from a wider pool of apps and ads for these apps shown on its platforms. As for the finer details of app fees and revenue-sharing from in-app purchases, Google still appears to be figuring it out. 'In parallel, Google is finalising its approach for an appropriate business model which considers developer commercial models in the RMG industry,' the company submitted to CCI. In regards to the CCI's decision to gather public feedback on its commitment proposal, Google told The Indian Express, 'We're pleased the CCI is market testing our proposed framework for real-money games (RMGs) in India. This development reflects our constructive discussions with the CCI and the Indian developer community along with our commitment to building a more open and safe ecosystem for RMG apps across Google Play and Google Ads.' 'We look forward to continuing to work with the CCI and the wider RMG ecosystem, and are confident our proposed framework will empower Indian developers, grow the digital economy, and prioritize user safety,' it added. The All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), an industry body which represents Mobile Premier League (MPL), Nazara, Gameskraft, and MyTeam11, among others, welcomed the Play Store changes proposed by Google. 'Over the past three years, we have actively engaged with all relevant stakeholders to help shape balanced and forward-looking policy outcomes for the sector. We're encouraged to see that this constructive engagement is bearing fruit, and believe this move will empower responsible operators, support innovation, and ensure a safer experience for Indian consumers,' Roland Landers, CEO of AIGF, said in a statement. As part of a pilot programme launched in 2022, Google only allowed apps involving daily fantasy sports (DFS) and rummy games to be hosted on the Play Store. While the pilot was supposed to last for a year, these two types of RMG apps remained on the app store. Now, Google has proposed to replace the pilot programme and allow the distribution of all RMGs, with certain conditions: – Developers will be required to self-declare that their apps are permissible online real-money games as per applicable Indian laws and jurisprudence. – Developers will need to submit proof that the app 'is in good standing' with a third-party body recognised by Google. These third-party bodies include industry associations such as AIGF as well as Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS) and e-Gaming Federation (EGF). – Developers will also need to ensure that their apps are compliant with Google policies, including the Google Play-Developer Distribution Agreement (DDA) and Developer Program Policies (DPP), which it said will be updated to reflect these changes. Google said it would start allowing developers of compliant RMG apps on the Play Store within 120 days of the CCI accepting its remedies and issuing such an order. In response to concerns raised by CCI on Google permitting ads only from DFS and Rummy apps, the company has proposed that it will allow games of skill to be advertised in India provided: – The advertiser provides proof that it is in good standing with a Recognised Third Party. 'Recognised Third Parties will be required to meet objective criteria, and may include industry associations such as AIGF, EGF and FIFS,' it said. – The advertiser provides Third Party Certification that the game it intends to advertise is a permissible game of skill. – The advertiser complies with Google Ads Policies. If accepted by the CCI, Google said that the related ad policy changes will take effect within 150 days of the regulator's order.

iPhone 16 tops shipments, Nothing fastest-growing brand in India: Report
Apple's iPhone 16 was the most-shipped smartphone in India during Q2 2025, highlighting the growing interest for premium devices among Indian buyers. According to the latest report from Counterpoint Research, India's smartphone market recorded an 8 per cent year-on-year growth in shipments, and a much sharper 18 per cent rise in overall value. That means not only are more phones being sold, but people are spending more on them too. This value growth came on the back of strong demand for premium and ultra-premium models, with brands offering attractive deals, financing options, and limited-time sales to attract top spot in shipment volume went to Vivo, which increased its share to 20 per cent in Q2 2025, up from 17 per cent the year before. Samsung followed closely with 16 per cent, while OPPO took third place with 13 per cent, helped by its revamped A5 and K series. Xiaomi's share dropped to 8 per cent, while Realme held 10 per cent of the market. Interestingly, Nothing was the fastest-growing brand for the sixth straight quarter, with 146 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth, driven by the new CMF Phone 2 Pro and aggressive offline saw solid gains in the ultra-premium space, with the company's 13 and 13R leading the charge and helping the brand grow 75 per cent YoY in that segment. It also managed to grow its share in value, even though its market share dropped slightly to 2 per cent in volume. Realme is also eyeing the high-end category, launching the GT series 7 Pro Dream Edition, targeted at younger buyers looking for flagship specs. The report points out that India's smartphone industry benefitted from better economic conditions — lower inflation and increased disposable income. Retail activity was also strong, with brands like Vivo, Samsung, and Apple offering better EMI plans, exchange offers, and bundled deals. The ultra-premium segment (Rs 45,000 and above) grew by 37 per cent YoY, the fastest among all price categories, with Apple and Samsung leading the shipments also reflected a healthy market. MediaTek led with a 47 per cent share, followed by Qualcomm at 31 per cent, which also grew its smartphone shipments by 28 per cent in the same other notable performers, Motorola grew shipments by 86 per cent YoY, riding high on demand for its G and Edge series and pushing deeper into smaller cities. Lava, meanwhile, was the fastest-growing brand in the sub-Rs 10,000 price segment with 156 per cent YoY growth.- Ends
